New Terraria? Yes please! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this.

I thought Re-Logic had stopped working?

Redigit has been back from sabbatical for a while. He released the massive 1.2 patch back in 2013 and announced that there would be some sort of sequel around the same time.

Not many games with more goodwill with me than Terraria so this will be an automatic day one with an extra copy for my son. Color me excited!

Interesting… The premise doesn’t sound that different than Terraria to me (isn’t the original game about reclaiming a world corrupted by evil stuff?), but we liked the original enough that I’ll have to keep an eye on this.

My co-op partner and I never actually ‘beat’ Terraria, but we had a lot of fun exploring and trying to drive back the evil grass. I suspect I may be in the minority, but my biggest hope for the sequel would be more NPC functions in the town, especially guards/defenses. I liked building a nifty fortress in Terraria, but I was disappointed that none of its denizens would help me defend it.

In further discussing this with some friends (after linking the page) one asked the question: “Can you build stuff?”

The fourth screenshot on the official site shows a house, but no indication as to whether it was player built. The character’s UI is suspiciously missing building materials, though that’s not necessarily a confirmation either way. But it’s an interesting question… I think there’s an assumption that you’ll be able to build stuff (a la Terraria) but maybe that’s not the case.

There’s a thread on the Terraria forums about this announcement, and no one asks the question (that I noticed anyway, I admit to not wading through all 18 pages), but there are a few dev posts that are intriguing. One says that “This is NOT Terraria 2”. Another says “It is a different approach, and I am sure not every Terraria player will like that direction, I would say that that is inevitable. Keep an open mind and decide for yourself when more info becomes available.”

It will be interesting to see how this progresses.

Hmm. Well I certainly hope you can build stuff. I’m sure this is obvious from my post above, but the building and exploring (in co-op) were a pretty key part of the game’s appeal for us. Without the capacity to build (and hence the drive to seek out new materials/ores for crafting and construction), I’m not sure why I’d play a game like this. Some people probably really enjoyed the 2d combat, but I don’t think that would be enough for me. The only other compelling reason for me to explore would be if they added a lot more story/RPG depth, but that’s not something I’d expect…

Ever since Minecraft, I’ve really longed for a couple related things: more of a reason to build, and more of a simulation/dynamic aspect to the worlds. Terraria had the right idea with constructing housing for important NPCs, but that is really, really limited. I want to build, and find, villages of NPCs that have an economy and a purpose. I want to build a big fortification, attract NPCs to live there, and have a reason to defend it. I’m hoping the mention of “strategy elements” at least has something along those lines.

I’d love these games if they were in a 3d world like minecraft, instead of the platform. I have no sense of exploration at all in sideview games.

Back to the drawing board and the contracted devs have been fired.

Our team had a clear vision for this game – one that we shared with all of you with much shared excitement – and, as much as we hate to say it (and in spite of all of the reforms we tried last year) - the current state of the game is still equal parts far from that vision and well behind schedule.

As a result, we have made the decision to move on from having Engine Software continue development of Terraria: Otherworld. Re-Logic has possession of the game (code, art, sounds, etc.) as it exists today, and we have been examining the array of options available to us to get TOW to a place to where we can confidently deliver on the vision and expectations we all have for this game. After taking a good hard look at everything, we feel that a new and fresh start/direction is the only way Otherworld will ever reach its full potential at this point.[/quote]

Apparently Engine Software was really having a lot of trouble in development. That’s incredible.

I didn’t notice the original article was from 2015 and was all excited. Oh well, back to being sad.

It’s dead Jim!

Not surprising. A year ago I thought “there’s a chance we’ll see it one day” but there’s been so little info about the game since.

Despite my original post, where I said “I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this”, I actually didn’t and completely forgot it was even a thing. So given the complete lack of news about it since it was announced, I suppose I’m not surprised that it’s been cancelled. Too bad, though.
