The French softball guy is in many ways the opposite of me – an extrovert who loves to dance and mingle, really super-outgoing, whereas I tend to be rather quiet, especially around people I don’t know (read: this entire weekend). I think I made it through the ‘trial by fire’ okay, though. We established a rapport almost immediately and because of that we never had that awkward dance around whether or not we were on a date (in my experience, first dates often feel more like job interviews). I’ve also not felt so physically comfortable with another date before – and I’m not referring to the ol’ sex thing. We just seem to click that way.

Echoing what Kael said, this has worked out really well for my fiance and I. She was very much the opposite of me on many levels but we shared the same core values and life goals and were very compatible where it counted. We have complimented each other very nicely and have both grown a ton as a result. (We met online which is why I was attracted to this thread. Now I lurk because people’s dating adventures are interesting.)

Ok…so a friend of my wife’s turned us onto AdultFriendFinder…compared to OKC this is like going from 1st grade to college. Holy shit this is crazy.

The next woman’s profile I see that lists “Chuck Pahlanuik” (sp?) as a favorite author and absolutely nothing else is going to force me into a spluttering rage. I had considered myself fairly well read, but I’d never heard of this asshole before I saw 9 out of 10 single women profiles have him listed to the exclusion of everyone else.*

I’ve noticed it a lot in this age group as well. I’m a few years older (OK, I’m 34) and started back at school last year, and it seems a lot of the girls this age mention Palahniuk as their favorite writer, or one of their favorites. I think it has to do with them being 11-13 years old when Fight Club came out (maybe seeing it a year or two later), getting all moony over Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, then reading more from him. It really struck me as strange too.

I think he’s a more current “edgy, hip” version of what Hunter S. Thompson was maybe a while back. They claim them as a favorite to sound intellectual and interesting.
