For a misdwestern not familiar with either program, why is June Junes such a “no-go” for Arizona?

Cause they fired Erickson, who was in his 60s, and they’re replacing it with a guy who, while a decent mid-level coach, is 58. And while he briefly head coached in the NFL and was decent at Hawaii, he’s not the sexy, promising pick that the boosters/alumni wanted. Even if Jones is decent at ASU, he’s going to be thinking retirement in a few years, anyway.

Meanwhile, the ASU fans see that WSU fires its coach and literally hires Mike Leach the following day, and they wonder why the hell their own athletic director (who they don’t like) is fucking up like this. They didn’t even seem to talk to Leach, who a lot of them would have killed for. Or, at least, they were led to believe Sumlin from Houston was their man. Jones feels like they’re desperately settling at this point. Especially since their in-state rival, Arizona, just hired RichRod.

The problem ASU (and UCLA, among others) have is that there aren’t that many sexy picks out there at this point. So I think expectations are unrealisticallly high at the moment. ASU is arguably in a no-win situation. Washington State laid the groundwork for Leach early - the AD admits talking to him over a month ago, though insists he told Leach at the time that he hoped he wouldn’t be making a change.

But really, just try and make a shortlist of who would really satisfy the alums at big schools. If Sumlin and Peterson say no, there really isn’t anything left.

Regarding UCLA, I’d say a lot has to do with a coaching search that looks like the one Tennessee ran before ending up with Dooley, when if he was going to announce he was after Petersen, he should have made sure it was a done deal first (and probably should have stepped up to the plate with an offer that was at least higher than what he turned down from Stanford last year).

RichRod’s an exciting pick? I know more than a few WVU alumni that were happy to see him leaving.

Can you imagine the recruiting? Everytime they play an away game it’s like a 73-hour plane trip.

Still not as bad as Hawaii and Louisiana tech being in the same conference.

Kansas is settling for Charlie Weiss as their next head football coach.

Kansas has a reputation for hiring the rotund for its football coaches.

After his glittering success at Notre Dame and Florida, why wouldn’t they?

At least the office furniture has already been Mangino tested.

'Cause they are both fat…Fat I tell you.

He won multiple BCS Bowl Games over the SEC and ACC. It may not have worked at Michigan, but I see him as a good to great hire. Arguably better than WSU’s Leach hire, and both are much better than June Jones, IMHO.

He was one win away from taking WVU to the MNC game as well. DickRod is a better hire than Jim Mora or June Jones.

Wow, that saves Florida a lot of awkwardness about getting rid of him.

I don’t know that was their intention, though. Reports suggest they were completely unaware that he’d even interviewed for another job.

UCLA hired Jim Mora Jr. Their alumni are melting down, though I say that the book on Mora hasn’t been written yet. He inherited a declining Seahawks team and was only given a year before they booted him for Pete Carroll. How much of his success at Atlanta was Vick and how much was him?

Rooting against him is hard for me, since he’s a fellow UW product. UCLA games are going to be interesting, too, because he and Sark are very good friends. They live on the same block on the Eastside, their kids are friends, and they even carpool together.

RGIII wins the Heisman. Good for him. I have some Baylor friends who are gonna be ecstatic.

It’s an interesting hire because there potential parallels to Carroll, i.e. a marginal NFL head coach with a “rah rah” aspect to his approach. And Carroll wasn’t embraced by USC at the time either because alums always want a big name proven winner. Which there weren’t any around for UCLA to hire anyway.

That said, while Mora’s UW ties would have made him a somewhat justifiable option for that school, UCLA is a whole different deal.

Sark meaning Sarkus?! Really?

Lol. More like Sarkisian, the head coach at Washington.
