Spring Lion - The Battle of Latien

There are several things about the game Dominions that really strike my fancy. One of the true pleasures of the game is to open up a turn where a major battle has taken place and watch the replay.

In one of my first games I was in the corner of th map next to Jotunheim a frosty land filled with Giants. I had a fire bless on my sacred lizard warriors and when the Giants came calling they ended up with their main battle army litteraly on fire. While the dominions engine is not exactly state of the art. I still remember seeing snowflakes falling on a line of battle hardened giants looming over my small troops who were holding their own and refusing to run as they set the giants on fire.

Most turns don’t have a fascinating battle. Sometimes entire games go by and there is no really interesting combat. Sometimes your scouts watch interesting enemey battles. In this case, the fate of empires was in the balance. I suspect if we ran it again that it would come out the same way, but I’m not sure about that. I hope I can do it justice.

So, here’s the terrain on the strategic map. At that moment Arco, Gath and Jomon were the three largest nations. Which of those nations was strongest depends on whose propaganda you believed. As Jomon, I was the largest, but much of my territory was underwater and I had seen the least combat of the three. Arco had been involved in several wars of expansion. Gath was second largest and was the only one of the three with access to blood magic, a very powerful school of magic in the end game.
I tried to get the world to attack Gath. The rest of the world nodded their heads, promised support and then watched as my troops crossed the border. It didn’t go well for me. As I retreated, the world sensed blood and dog piled on me. At this point I’ve lost a bunch of territory, but none of my forts.

The fort in the center of the map that has both Jomon’s flag and Gath’s flag is Latien where I am under siege. At Latien my back is against the wall and I have to stand to try and protect my nation’s interior if I am to have any hope of winning. The siege had gone on long enough that the gates are broken and if I do not repel Gath from the province he will be able to storm the castle this turn. The castle contains my god, Long Tall Summer Grass, but LTSG is an immobile oracle and can’t join the fight outside the castle walls. If I can force Gath backwards, I can likely make peace with everybody else and get enough breathing room to come up with a new trick or two. If I lose here the dog pile will continue to eat my lunch and I will shortly be reduced to a minor underwater nation without enough resources to make a mark while the rest of the world passes me by.

Spring Lion - The Battle of Latien

Gath has built several heroic units that are capable of standing solo against armies. Fortunately for me, those super units usually cannot win a siege. He has to have regular units as part of that army in order to complete a siege. According to the rules of dominions combat, if I can cause enough damage to the rest of his army, all of his units on the field will route even the super units. So, I may not be able to defeat these super units, but if I can cause enough damage elsewhere, even the super units will flee the field of battle.

Immediately below Latien is the Gath Mage Frutti di Mare who has some of the most advanced gear in the game.

Frutti led a force coming into Towen, the fort next to Latien, last turn. I managed to push that force away, and Frutti was the only Gathian survivor from that fight. He holds the best shield in the game, the Aegis and the Boots of the Planes which means he can move anywhere on the strategic map and can enter combat before other movement takes place. Frutti has single handedly put a stop to any notion that I have of raiding Gathian territory, because he can just teleport on top of any raiders cast a few self buffs and he ends up regenerating and ethereal with a defense of 20, protection of 31 and magic resistance of 26. The red star means that Frutti has a heroic ability. In his case he recovers from fatigue at a very fast rate. Suffice it to say, he’s a beast. He’s the best of what Gath has, but they have a lot like him.

There are 15 slots in the hall of fame. 7 of those are occupied by dead heroes. Patala and I each have one. Arco has 2. Gath has the remaining 4. Before the battle of Towen he had 7.

Spring Lion - The Battle of Latien

What can stand against that?

The Ryujin are Japanese dragons, powerful mages who can take human and dragon form. These are very expensive units in terms of gold and they can’t carry much in the way of artifacts in their dragon form. I will commit 9 Ryujin to the battle which represents almost a year’s worth of my empires gold production at its height.

Akeno – a flying wind priest who commands 20 sacred warriors that can fly and throw lightning.

Sethan- a mundane regular commander kitted out with flying gear so he can keep up with the 25 sacred Pegasus riders he leads. The Pegasus riders are not a national troop, but were a lucky indy find. Since I’ve got a decent bless, flying indy sacreds were, well, a blessing.

Noatun – A Mechanical Giant newly summoned last turn and hastily outfitted with whatever gear I can rustle up.
Totally resistant to the elements this mindless ethereal flying awe machine should have everybody running from him

The Three Amigo’s – Well, it started out the four friends, but one of them died. 2 Ujigami and a Kenzoko, sacred ethereal mythical warriors who cause awe in their foes kitted out with the best equipment I can make. Kinchika,Koremasa and Murashige are the best warriors I have.

Three Squads of sacred Yambushi of about 40 men each. Small decent all around troop elevated to superior status by the earth and astral bless that gives them extra defense, magic resistance, twist fate and extra reinvigoration. My early expansion was fueled by these Tough as nails troops. One squad is led by my prophet his holiness Mikio. On the first turn Mikio will cast divine blessing giving every sacred unit on the battlefield the blessing of Long Tall Summer Grass which will make them much tougher units.

A troop of 50 light infantry. Their primary job is to stay behind the lines and act as a pincushion for incoming arrows and spells that might hit my central core of mages. Extra hit points in reserve to keep the body of my army from routing.

Kada – A regular mage whose sole job is to use a tremendous artifact that I had won from Gath during a previous battle. The Sceptre of corruption fires banefire at foes. Kada’s job is to stand in the front lines and throw as much damage as he can while my troops rush past him.

In addition I have 4 crystal mages using astral and earth magics, 6 priests and 10 national mages with all kinds of paths coming into the combat.

I’m as loaded for bear as I can get. It represents 2/3 my troops and probably a third of my mages. There are only a few mages that could enter this combat that are not joining in, more to keep SOME garrison in my castles than anything else. There is a small detachment of 12 horsemen that are on a diversionary raid towards Frutti di Mare. My only other land based army is headed south where TC is pinching another castle. That army of 85 units could not reach Latien this turn. An undersea force of sharkmen and 3 Ryujen are several turns away.

I’m all in.

I could make Gath fight at the gates of Latien and us my god Long Tall Summer Grass, but none of the reinforcements from Towen would be able to be used there. I would have had about half the force available that I can use in the field, but I would have been defending with Long Tall Summer Grass available as an astral mage and had the choke point of a castle gate. It was not an easy decision to meet him in the field.

Spring Lion - The Battle of Lation

Strategy

Pretty basic tactics. A squad of sacred Yambushi on each flank with another to hold the middle. A pincushion of lessor troops around the central rear core.

One set of fliers on the left and another in the middle. They are set to hold and attack in the hope that they can gain some etherealness from my mages before they hit the enemy.

After being blessed the three amigo’s will hit the enemies rear.

The Dragons are all set to throw Ice Strikes at the enemy. This spell tore his troops to pieces at Towen and I’m hoping for great effect from it again.

I have several mages dispersed throughout each squad acting as artillery. The old standbys paralyze, blindness, charm, frozen heart and gifts from heaven. Several are set to cast a buff to stay alive (ethereal) or to improve everybody’s accuracy (Aim). Besides my bless that will hit all my sacred troops, the only troop buff that I am casting is Marble Warriors.

I have access to a spell called communion which will elevate certain casters ability to throw high level spells. It’s a good technique that I have used in previous battles. I’m hoping that the sheer quantity of spells heading his way will make a communion superfluous.

Spring Lion - The Battle of Lation

And finally……here’s the battle.
My troops

I think you can make out three squads at the front and a pack of fliers and pincushions at the rear. There are a couple of mages at the back of the screen. The dragons stand out as well.
The forces of Gath.

And the panorama

I’m on the left here.
And in the first round there is a casting of antimagic from a Gathian hero.

The armor of virtue gives him the ritual of return on him so if I do manage to hit him, he just leaves the field of battle. The dimensional rod is driving him crazy. Rune Smasher, The Green Eye and a spell focus make his penetration incredible.

Most of his other mages form a communion. One of them is holding the Sword of Aurgelmer which grants luck to all his units on the field. It’s one of the better battle artifacts in the game. Since Tenuki already has a many of the unique astral artifacts (dimensional rod/boots of planes/armor of virtue), it’s not a shock that he has this as well. It doesn’t help my cause.

Both sides carry a Banner of the Northern Star which increases the effectiveness of any astral spells.
The Gathian front line squad advanced towards my troops and caught the brunt of several ice storms, ethereal crows lightning strikes and arrows.

Gath responded by throwing Nether darts into my advancing Yamabushi. Magma Eruption also came at them. They were pounded by stellar cascades which stuns and fatigues my troops.

And then in the middle of round 2, there is another surprise. Life after Death. That means that all his lucky troops with antimagic on them are now going to become zombies when they die. I have to kill them twice. How many death casters did he bring? ….He brought 7 death casters including this fine fellow, the wraith lord Pasta Nera.

The three amigo’s and Noatun ,the mechanical giant, fly to attack the enemy’s lines.

And Gath has his own flying surprise. As the two blue creatures hit the center of my pin cushion. To the left is a Frost fiend a cold blood summons.

In the middle is Bune an ice devil who holds the sickle whose crop is pain. He’s in hand to hand combat with an ethereal dragon.

Spring Lion - The Battle of Latien

My mages started to spam Gifts from the heavens into the Gathian lines. Fortunately it didn’t hit one of the amigo’s. Unfortunately this set didn’t hit any of Gath’s troops as well. A bad day is when a meteor hits you. I don’t know how many meteors were thrown in this battle, but both sides were throwing them. I suspect there were at least 15 spell castings and each casting has three meteors. Watch your step. As Tenuki points out, Twist Fate is a real good bless to have when these things are being scattered about the battlefield.

And then in round three comes Doom, an astral spell that curses every one of my units on the battle field. So, all of my units are cursed and all of his units have luck. OOPS.
Finally my flying non leader units release off of their hold and attack orders. The spirits go to attack Bune in the center. About half of the Pegasus decide to hit Gath’s back line. The pincushion squad of light infantry breaks under Bune’s assaults, but one of my squads of Yamabushi turns away from Gath’s troops and heads towards Bune.

What is that at the back surrounded by an astral shield?

Why, it’s Carbonara the Arch Devil. I wonder what unique he holds? Why, it’s the ember. Oh-oh.

Here’s a picture from the Gathian side of the battle with Nether Darts in the air and burning units along with a cold effect on the left and an astral shield on the right. Giants and zombies, ethereal eagles and demons, Pegasus and earth elementals.

After a couple of turns Carbonara moves forwards and it starts to get confusing.

So in my back line is my prophet, Mikio and several flying warriors trying to fend off Bune the ice devil.
In front of them are four Ryujin, one of whom has been paralyzed, along with Kado with the scepter of corruption. They are going at it hand to hand with the arch devil Carbonara.

In front of that group, my Yambushi are desperately trying to cover the ground between them and the main Gathian force. Small groups of Gath troops get overwhelmed, but nether darts and stellar cascades are taking their toll on my troops.

In front of that group is the main body of Gath troops that is stuck in place fighting the three amigo’s.
And then towards the back of Gath’s lines were several Pegasus riders and another paralyzed Ryujin fighting with giants, several earth elementals and Patsta Nera the Wraith Lord.

In the very back, fatigued by his earlier casting work is Ai Fanghi, the insane giant carrying some of the best astral gear in the game.

….it was a little disorganized.

My prophet was right next to Bune going toe to toe with him.

The mages were off script now. Instead of using his artifact, Kado is throwing paralyze.

My Yamabushi is just breaking through his line and into his mages….and the death casters start skellispamming.
And that’s the spell that breaks my back. Level 3 Raise Dead. It puts more meat into his meat shield. My troops are exhausted and ready to start cutting through his mages and….here is an endless supply of giant undead coming my way and I have…maybe 4 priests on the field of battle. The dragons start casting cleansing water an effective anti undead spell, but it was too late.

The unarmored Pegasus warriors take too much punishment and finally decided to flee the battlefield.

Ai Funghi woke up and cast opposition on Noatun my flying mechanical giant and he is gone. Pasta Nara and Bune are now stronger than they were when the fight started.

I believe one squad of living troops from Gath does not break, but the fresh squads of giant undead are too much for my troops. When my sacred Yamabushi break on the front line, there are three of them left alive. About 80 started the battle and 3 survived. It makes Pickett’s charge look like a walk in the park.

As we flee from the battle the Ice Devil Bune and the Arch Devil Carbona team up to strike down my prophet Mikio.
Two of my nine dragons survive. Three mages. two priest and Akeno the wind priest survives. All three amigo’s survive the battle.

Both armies ended up losing ¾ of our rank and file troops. I was only able to kill 3 of his 21 commanders while I lost 22 of my 36 leaders.

It’s game changing. Just not in the way I wanted the game changed.

Sure enough with the loss of my forces the vultures start to circle. Arco sends an army my way. T’ien Ch’I has a little army sniffing around there at the bottom of my empire. At the end of the next turn. Gath stormed the fort at Latien and managed to strike down Long Tall Summer Grass.

Spring Lion - The Battle of Latien

THOUGHTS FROM GATH.

Tenuki the mind behind Gath was kind enough to add his thoughts.

My idea was mostly the kill-me-an-oracle plan:

  • soulless (and mindless) chaff in front
  • a skimpy but amazingly durable line of lucky, fate-twisted, life-after-deathed MR17/18 sacreds second. Not so amazingly durable without Divine Bless. That was dangerous, even though most fell to evocations.
  • a large reverse communion (with Body Ethereal, Invulnerability, Eagle Eyes, Summon EP, Twist Fate, Power of the Spheres, LotNS) spamming cheap evocations and Gifts from Heaven in back
  • one big Astral Mage (Ai Funghi) for Antimagic and Paralyze
  • one D5 mage (Pasta Nera) for Life After Death (on turn 2 because of a potential turn 1 Master Enslave), then skellispam
  • 2 SCs (Bune, Carbonara) set to attack flyers and large creatures, respectively
  • the Sword of Aurgelmer
dfs on the other hand had not quite what I expected but
  • more than twice the numbers, mostly his E9S9 sacreds, who are better than my sacreds
  • sacred flyers. Amazing lots of sacred flyers. I had completely forgotten that amazons have sacreds.
  • some nasty, non-large (sacred) glass cannon thugs, a mechanical giant, all fully kitted
  • Ice Strike and Gifts from Heaven up the wazoo
  • You might want to mention cold 3 – extra prot, att, def, chill aura for an Ice Devil, +10 encumbrance for Ryujin. The way I see the battle (in hindsight), cold resistance and fatigue played a pretty large role in deciding the outcome by taking some of the edge of your excellent sacreds. (Hence also the otherwise stupid Stellar Cascades.) Come to think of it, I totally should have cast Elemental Fortitude on my communion. That AND Divine Blessing. Sloppy.
  • I don’t know whether including Towen is helpful in terms of illustrating strategies… on my part, I thought I’d loaded all the excess equipment on a scout and sent him home. An enc-14 Kohen Gadol wasn’t quite what I’d intended to ever see the light of Llamaserver… neither was the lack of fire gems. They were still on the shuttle scout who should’ve exited the province with the loot. This story has some potential as an example for why you should double-check your moves though. :)

Thank you Tenuki……

The reverse communion is a good idea. Instead of using a communion to give the masters a higher level of casting, he uses the masters to cast buffs that will affect all the communion slaves. He was afraid of the oracle, and I must admit I wish the oracle was on the field of battle.

I’ve posted long AAR’s, but for me this game really came down to this battle. While winning this battle would not have meant a win in the game, losing pretty much destroyed my position in the game.

great write up dfs!

Spring Lion : Chi’s POV

I had a bad start, which, on top of a poorly designed pretender, put me on the defensive and craving 3NAPs. Got one with Gath, then Bogarus, then Arco, then with Jomon (i don’t think i even saw Pan in the whole game). Bogarus got off to a flying start and there was talk of a gang-up - i think jomon and patala were involved - but at the crucial time I had to go away…

Upon my return Bogarus and Patala were at each other. Nate cleverly talked me out of breaking the 3NAP, which in retrospect I should have cancelled. In the (looooong) end, Patala took him out, but it meant my frustration was aimed at that direction: beside I had no 3NAP with Patala.

I was keen to get Bogarus’s capital, and talked to Jomon a lot: but Jomon was wanting to turtle. However, keen not to be drawn into a conflict, I think he helped squeeze two provinces out of Patala to allay my sabre-rattling.

Then came one of the most intense diplo rounds ever: jomon wanted to gang up on gath with me, arco and patala; it was kind of agreed (I cancelled all my 3naps as a cover), but no-one was talking detail, particularly Arco. I started to smell a rat (in my mind), and contacted Gath, who told me that he was smelling a (real) rat, and that he still had a 3nap with arco. I contacted Jomon, and he WOULD NOT GIVE ME A NEW 3NAP, so I took a 3NAP from Gath and Arco, and that sealed the deal. When Jomon attacked Gath, I attacked Jomon - that one move was kinda good, but it hurt real bad when I lost my prophet to mind enslave (I never got him back, nor could I get a new one: bug?) and could not bless my troops. I let the heavy hitters smash it out, while I took bits and pieces from Jomon.

Then came Jomon’s counter-diplo to get Gath. I watched them all slug it out, thinking always about trying to get the two capitals from Patala, the only one I didn’t have a 3NAP with. I sealed a deal with Jomon, so he could concentrate on Gath, while I prepared to take on the engaged Patala. It was a sneak play that I don’t think I could have carried off. But that is where we left it: me sieging Patala’s 2 caps.

Chi

Thanks for the AARs. This sheds a little light on some mysteries.

Something else: In which ways does banefire count as fire? Is it affected by FR?

And what’s the next game? How about Middle Era for a change? I’ve got this idea for another spectacularly ineffective Pan build bouncing around in my head.

I think there is a small middle era game starting up over at the broken forum if you want to get something going right away. Personally I will not join a new game before the summer, going to be away a lot. Will probably be looking for a new game after that and when Sleipnir is starting to look close to finished.

By the way, could you move the Sleipnir deadline this turn? It’s looking increasingly likely that I will not be able to complete my move before I go away this weekend, so not going to be able to do my turn before Sunday.

Thanks, and done.

That was a blast to read, dfs.

There is no resistance to banefire - but it tends to miss a lot.

I don’t know what folks were thinking in Sleipnir.

With the end of spring lion I will be starting Crooked Trunk.

Crooked Trunk will be a CBM Middle Era Game of 6-8 players.
Each player will submit one or two nations to the pool.
It is player’s choice if they submit one or two.

Nations will then be selected from the pool with players having won games at QT3 selecting last.

I have not selected a map and expect to do so once I know where we land on the 6-8 players list.

I would like to select nations asap with the intent of starting the actual game around July 16th.

Diplomacy by E-mail/pm and the forum are to be encouraged.

I expect Crooked Trunk to run at a slightly more relaxed pace than Spring Lion, but if you find yourself regularly staling in other games or if you have real life commitments that will take you away for weeks at a time in August/September then please consider waiting for (or starting) another game.

The next seven posters declaring that they are in, give me a nation (or two) and the number of wins they have in QT3 games (or an approximation) will be in the game. If we get 12 folks interested I’ll follow the Hugin/Munin model and start two games of 6.

DP is absolutely correct. 3 capitols is the likely victory conditions. This will not be a 150 turn slogfest.

dfs - Van, Pythia - Two games in Great Atlantic’s tournament for my only wins.
Dave Perkins Machaka, Eriu - Newbs and Sharks
pyrhic - Caelum, R’lyeh - No
Nate - Agartha, Shinuyama - No
Austen - Ulm - No
Evil Steve - Jotun, Man - No
Tenuki - Abysia, Pan - Spring Lion
Maerlande - Bandar - No

I would like to play, but only if the victory condition is 3 capitals controlled. I’ve won one game (Newbies & Sharks) recently, although there may be a victory or two in the dim, early 2000s past. Also, I love the map we’re using for Munin. I’ll put in Machaka and Eriu.

I’d be in.

Winless. I’ll select Caelum, and (if you are considering water) R’lyeh. If not, i’ll just stick with Caelum.

I should say no, but I’m not going to.

I’ll throw in Agartha and Shinuyama.

Also never won a game.

I’m in… Submitting Vanheim and Ulm.

me! me! um…

Jotun…and…for Perkins…Man
