Umm, this may seem a little silly to say, but I put quite some effort in my strategies and would be slightly sorry to see the result ruined by a, uh, by somebody who has little or no experience with end games.

The main edge I have in that game is a huge research lead, so there’s a ton of options for scripting armies. The game is also explicitly labeled as no noobs.

I’d offer to take over if I could find a sub for the two games I’m trying to leave.

The best places to look for a game right now would be Dom3Mods and probably the dominions irc channel at gamesurge.net. After that, Shrapnel, though it could become slow going.

When Dominions 3 is published on Desura, there will be forums over there and I expect that they will attract people from all the existing communities (Shrapnel, Dom3Mods, SA and other places). It will take a couple of days to get the forums running, but after that it should not be too difficult to organize games over there.

Any questions regarding the Desrua Dom3 forums should be addressed to yours truly, as I shall be the one admining them. However, I’d hold off on those until the game does get out on Desura, because right now there is no solid information on whether the launch will happen on December 1 or later. When things do get up and running, it’s going to happen fast.

Tenuki mentions dom3mods. Perhaps Gandalf Parker can illuminate us with other choices now that the shrapnel forum is a ghost town.

I am very leery of cross-forum contamination. Every forum has its own flavor, and thru attrition develops its own playing group. I know of a dozen forums that maintain active dom3 games but I like the Qt3 crowd too much to mention them. :)
MAYBE the game goons at SomethingAwful.com forum. They have their own Dom3 games tracking server with multiple hosts. And they have an active IRC channel.

It might be the season since even that is about a third of the games Ive seen it run with. (btw all server softwares are open source if you wanted to do one of your own)

@ dfs - If you want to know about Dominions related stuff, then you are better off asking someone who genuinely knows about it, and more importantly, is willing to share it. Don’t listen to the preachings of false prophets who have to feign a position of importance in the Dominions community in order to be heard.

And so for those interested, here are some of the other active Dom3 communities that exist out there. (not a complete list, but chunky enough to get by on)

The Gaming Den - They play almost exclusively vanilla games, although they have recently tried a few different game formats (Draft games). A few old faces from Shrapnel have taken up residence here. Namely Frank Trollman, K, and Dr.Praetorious.

This is also a good place to go for accurate reference resources, and is where momfreek’s brower utility is currently being developed. A lot of faces from Shrapnel live here such as Sombre, llamabeast, Maerlande, and me, Calahan.

Absolute Games (Russian) - Don’t think this community is active anymore (or at least not on this site). Some familiar Shrapnel faces used to play here such as the long time veterans Ano, Dimaz, WingedDog, Kuritza, Karnoza (there are a LOT of Russian players who are seriously good at the game). The playing community seems to have migrated to the dedicated Dominions3 forum that is coming up next.

Un-named Russian Community (Russian) - It seems the players from Absolute Games have moved here. Don’t know anything about this forum apart from recognising a few names (past and present) from Shrapnel. (and they play CBM judging by the game list)

Paradox Dominions Community - You will need to be a registered member to view the thread, and if I understand correctly, you also need to have a game registered as well (to view the thread). It appears they run at most 1-2 games at a time (Wetfeet/foot series of games on llamaserver), and Peter Ebbesen and Jarkko are the familiar Shrapnel faces that play there.

Bay12 - Very smilar to Paradox. They run 1-2 games at a time (series of games with the Bay12 prefix on llamaserver). I don’t know much about the community though and I don’t see any gnarly old vets there that I recognise.

Something Awful - Gandalf gave the link to their server (brainwinkle), but not to the Mega thread they use (or one of those they use). This is regarded as just about the most active community out there, and they experiment with a wide variety of different game formats. They also have they own series of mods (Awesome mods). Their Mega thread (linked) sometimes becomes available to members only for a period of time though, so if you want uninterrupted access to the Mega thread (and their other Dom3 threads and archives) then you need to register at Something Awful (costs a nominal fee of $5 IIRC).

I seem to recall there being a few other communities as well, but haven’t got convenient links to them (Google would likely find them if you had a bit of dedication). Fairly sure there is an active French community, as a few Shrapnel old timers play there (LDiCesare IIRC). There are forums dedicated to other games that sometimes run a Dominions game. The Stardock forums I know had a few Dom games at one time, and IIRC CivFanatics had the odd game now and then as well. A couple of other forums had discussions about Dom3, but can’t recall many that turned that chatter into a game (or at least not regular games).

Actually I didnt respond to that person but to the one who mentioned me by name as a possible source. I simply said I was leery of it. Its just a habit.

No you simply decided that you weren’t going to answer the question properly, despite being fully capable of doing so. And YOU decided, without ever being asked to make such a judgement, that the QT3 Dominions community is only worthy of knowing about the SA Dominions community (or vice-versa). You were asked a perfectly resonable question about what other Dominions communities exist, and you chose to selectively pick which ones to mention, and based on some warped selection criteria that nobody but you would ever care about.

Edit - Sorry about the intrusion everyone. But thought someone above board should properly answer the question that was asked, seeing as how the person who was asked decided not to. Personally I’d highly recommened checking out other Dominions communites, and if the stars align in such a way as to offer you the opportunity to play a game in another community, then no reason not to take it. Dominions 3 would still be a small community even if all those that exist were combined, and so getting to know players from other communites can only be good for the overall health of a small community like the Dom3 one.

Hi guys. I haven’t dropped by in a while but noticed the references to other communities.

You’ll probably see a lot of cultural differences. I play mainly on Dom3mods and some with the Something Awful crowd and now a bit here. I used to play on Shrapnel but haven’t for a long time. That’s a long story. I try to maintain a basic online persona close to myself, but I also work to stay within the culture of each board. That said, Dom3mods is my main home and my presence there is sometimes a bit overpowering.

I run the #dominions irc channel on irc.gamesurge.net. It used to be run by others but was suffering some neglect so I took over the registration and operator duties. Drop by any time for blitz games or just a chat.

For some reason my subscription to this thread stopped sending me notifications. I reset it once and it’s still not working. I’m not sure what the problem is. I was using that to keep in touch.

Yes… Morberis asked. And dfs answered him mentioning me. And I replied to dfs about why I didnt jump to answer Morberis.

Since dfs answer mentioned dom3mods (again) I didnt bother mentioning it, and I mentioned the only other fairly active site over the holidays (I expect the others will pick up after the holidays or better yet if/when Dom3 hits steam soon).

Its the versa that worries me more. :) Qt3 is a great community and one of the few where Illwinter still appears once in awhile. I rarely mention Qt3 when people in other forums ask for someplace new to go.

In this instance “shortly” is to be taken that they will be put up tomorrow, as it’s getting far too close to midnight here to effectively do anything today, but fortunately I have the day off tomorrow.

Scribble attacked the province next to my capital with a large army and a crazy SC. Austen’s small force remaining was routed.

I, however, was attacking into the same province, and met Scribble’s army head on. While we were able to dispatch everything but the SC, the rest of my forces were ripped to shreds.

Thusly, gg Scribble. I’m assuming enough of an army is left to move back and assault my capital in a few turns.
