Thanks Scribble.
Morberis, that might be the best bet as we weren’t getting enough interest directly here. Too many pro’s. ;)
I’ll join you in one of Calahan’s games on Desura, just let me know which and I’ll reply in thread over there. I would suggest ‘A Casual Affair’ would be the best starting place. I can probably convince Calahan to let me join despite my 10 or so games.

Wait, what??!?!
Am I really seen as a weak-willed pushover who will simply overlook the rules due to a friendly bit of light coercion?!? Damn, all the years I spent building up my cover as a hardnose have all just been casually swept away :(
Right, I now have my first New Years resolution. Be. More. Harsh.
Need more than 20 posts here at QT3 for that street cred, Calahan! ;)
I will sign up on the Desura forum shortly, once I semi-randomly select a nation that I have not played before.
I assume you will be disallowing some of the nations that are overpowered or probably not all that newbie friendly, such as R’lyeh and the blood nations?

Hadn’t really thought of it to be honest. As I assumed, having little to no actual experience of how casual games work, that games that were more casual were also less concerned about stuff like OP/UP nations and overall balance. So I wasn’t planning on banning any nations. Plus if I start banning nations that are OP/UP in vanilla, and/or not newb friendly, I might start running out of nations :)
So I’ll leave recruitment open to all nations for now, unless I hear some good reasons to limit it. And assuming new players can seek advice on the forums about “newb friendly” nations, without needing me to weed out and ban the ones that aren’t “newb friendly”.
Hopefully some of the vets can add their thoughts, but I don’t think I have played a game that allowed R’lyeh. My understanding is that they are considered overpowered on any map that gives them breathing room in the water (which is kind of a given if there are water nations in the mix). Not sure why exactly, never even played a test game with them. Could be their strong native astral income, capital mages and native amphibious recruits, combined with the fact that they can build a very strong power base before most land nations can even get access to water.
Blood nations are also considered not very newbie friendly. With so much going on in the game to begin with, learning to build a blood economy, sacrificing traditional economics and the overall micromanagement involved can be difficult to get to grips with. I know it was in my first blood game!
At this stage I’d keep an eye out for anyone that wants to play R’lyeh, Mictlan, Hinnom or Lanka and maybe suggest they should play their first game with a different nation. Still leaves around 20 to choose from.
sharaleo, it used to be that late age R’lyeh (along with Ermor) was considered unbalanced and generally unfun and game-warping. Consequently they were banned from most games. I hear that they aren’t too bad in the latest CBM though, and have seen them played a bit on other forums. No personal experience to back this up though.
Early age R’lyeh is not known to be a powerhouse however. Big problems getting out of the water (in vanilla at least). I think it is an interesting and balanced nation that I probably would not recommend to a newer player. Main reason is that you could easily end up playing a not very interactive game, pottering around in the water and not learning much.
Actually sharaleo, remember the first game you played - Quartertodawn? Another newbie who played that game was Sir Digby. He was assigned Oceania and ended up interacting very little with the other players, and then never played another MP game of Dom3 here. I think playing a water nation in his first game at least contributed to him finding the Dom3 MP experience not much fun.
Dammit you have a good memory. All I remember is being very rudely introduced to the concept of thugs, thanks to Juffo’s Arco powerhouse. I still have nightmares of GoR’d gargoyles tearing up my provinces.

RAND game:
pyrhic, why don’t you toss in Bogarus for me. I don’t know a lot about the nation, but it looks pretty cool to put into the mix.

Add me in and throw TC into the mix, please.
Thanks I’ll do that, signing up for serious business. I’m gonna see if I can get another friend that has Dom3 to join up as well.

Personally, i love Bogarus - lots of things to play with there.

Perkins played as R’lyeh in one game here. Can’t remember if he won it, but if not, I think he was close.
I don’t remember it that well since he killed me first(as Atlantis). However, I did have the incredible satisfaction of carving every tentacle off his octopus god before it slithered offscreen.
Of course, they all grew back.

Yeah, he won, but it was close. That was played on that amazing Bering map.
That whole sequence was one of the most thrilling bits of Dominions I’ve ever been part of. I had never rushed anyone quite like that before! And you frightened me. Still do.

I’m ready to throw in the towel. There’s nothing i can do against his thugs.
