I discovered a funny bug(?). Mindless units cannot gain experience stars. But apparently they can when they win the arena deathmatch. My marble oracle just got three stars. never seen that before.

You prob. don’t have a shot since you can’t deal with darkness and you have a very short amount of time to get the walls down on one of the caps, with some distance to travel. I thought Austen might be able to give it a go, but maybe he just doesn’t have enough demons yet.

I would have to put under siege with enough this turn to Storm immediately. I could try (I have a large number of +siege items forged), but honestly, I doubt I would succeed and even if I did… meh…

I think this game was over a long, long time ago. I tried fighting through it for a while, but I don’t think anyone else has really been into this game for a long time now. I don’t see much cause for trying to extend it.

I have a few thoughts to offer, but I will wait until we’re officially done. Which I think we should be. :)

Whee! Middletown is going! My first game after nearly two months off.

Not sure what you’ve been ‘fighting through’, but it certainly wasn’t scribble…

Does everything look alright? I hope I set it up properly…

Ya, i don’t see a reason to continue. I was open to keep playing incase someone was employing a different path to win, but now that you’ve started on the victory conditions, unless someone can displace you from those, i’d say it’s over.

Reminder to all, we’re on a 24hr quickhost at the start. I’ll be checking the first round to make sure that no one stales because they didnt know it started, but after that I won’t be.

Please pm me if you need an extension or want to extend/modify the timer.

Austen, I don’t entirely appreciate the sentiment you are expressing here. What you are saying sounds a little like “Maybe I could have won but screw it why bother?”.

I don’t mean to be ungracious in victory, but I think you should either: do your utmost to stop me from winning OR concede and admit that you can’t. Conceding if you think you have a chance of winning diminishes the game.

My own view is that the outcome of the game cannot be changed at this point, but I am not happy taking a win just because you couldn’t be bothered to stop me.

Looks okay so far. We’ll see! ;)

With the “end” of KillScribble clearly in sight I believe the only active game is Middletown which is on turn 2 today. No forum woofing on Middletown since it’s a no-diplo game.

I’m thinking of a middle era game with 4-5 players. Anybody interested?

The llamascores suggest there’s a VP in each cap, so you might want to check the VP graph to make sure the grey-ish line is positioned where it should be (no idea what the cap requirement is in the game though, or if VP’s were meant to be switched on. The curse of a forum without OP’s to conveniently check :()

I disagree with this. A lot of folks worked fairly hard on this but it became pretty frustrating b/c your strategy was to force everyone else in the game to fight Scribble while you gobbled up Mictlan to take the driver’s seat.

Surprisingly, encouraging other players to embark in a losing endeavor while you embark on a winning strategy is not effective diplomacy. I also think your advice, while meant well, was frustrating b/c a) it assumed the rest of us didn’t know what we were doing and b) it wasn’t realistic and c) you were clearly NOT fighting so receiving backseat advice isn’t fun.

As for the rest, I put a lot of effort into micro-scripting a few fights. I thought I had a winning strategy but it fell apart b/c my guys were too far back to cast the right spell. So my army died b/c I borked my communion. I should have one the fight to lift the siege on my capitol. I think I still would have lost b/c Scribble could have combined his killer prophet with his army forcing me to try to club an army and a 500+ HP thug, which isn’t a great combo.

Since everyone wanted to play it out, I launched counter-attacks and sent weapons to my allies in an attempt to reign in Scribble. I knew I couldn’t hold my capitol but I did my best to weaken Scribble’s army.

I’d be in - down to one game now.

Been there.
I soooooo love the idea of communions.
I soooooo hate playing real games with them.

The gift that keeps on giving.
How did Mr. Perkins do against the Maker of Ruins?

Very well said.

I hereby concede and admit that I cannot stop a Scribble victory. I have zero chance of winning this game.

My equivocation was a childish manifestation of my frustration with my own shortcomings.

In the interests of keeping this post completely on topic, I will share other thoughts separately.

With Kill Scribble behind us, I’d love to chat about it a bit. I have a few specific things I would like to go into some detail on, but maybe will keep this post shorter with a few short questions/comments/observations. These are terribly scattershot… sorry…

  1. The number one thing I really want to know is what happened when Scribble and Nate collided.

For any who don’t recall, I had a medium sized army in a province between two much larger armies, one owned by Mictlan (Nate) and one by Agartha (Scribble). I moved my army and they both attacked the province that my army had been in and pretty much destroyed each other.

It doesn’t make sense that they would have attacked there to go after my army as my army that was there. My army was much smaller than either of their’s and had been no the move for a while. THere was no way it was going to still be there when they attacked.

My guess is that Scribble was going to move after Nate’s Cap. Not sure what Nate was doing though.

  1. I am a giant idiot who can’t seem to get the basics down. I once again failed to understand the victory conditions for a game. In Crooked Trunk, this almost cost me the game directly due to me simply not taking the correct cocnditions into my calculations late in the game.

In this game, I don’t know that it cost me anything. My plan (which I will cover briefly in another post) was geared towards a strong mid-late game. If I had realized we were doing another “short win conditions” game I would have made a different design. No way to know how that would have effected (affected?) things. Maybe I would’ve gotten squashed early. Still… I’m an idiot… that’s really the point :P

  1. Speaking of the “short win conditions”, I don’t think I like them. Having played two games with them now, it’s not my thing right now. I understand where others in this forum have been and why they may like them though. Over time, I will prob. find an appreciation for the unique challenges/flavor that they bring. Right now though, I think I prefer games with more traditional win conditions.

  2. I really wish I could somehow decouple this comment from the game just completed, because I don’t want to take anyting away from Scribble’s win. He played very well and beat asses.

I think I’m in the minority on this, and I realize it prob. sounds like sour grapes, but I think it’s prob a bad idea playing a game with:

  • A map with significant water
  • No aquatic/water starting nations
  • Land based amphibious nations

Again, I don’t want to say that Scribble didn’t earn this win, because I think you still have to play really well to win from any position.

I do believe though that a nation that can get their full fill of land provinces while dominating the water effortlessly is prob in a great position. I think we have a similar setup in Middletown, so I’ll be curious to see how that plays out.

  1. Speaking of water, I think it’s a Qt3 thing, or maybe it’s just an oddity of my experience, but I was surprised at the degree to which folks here seem to feel that they inherently “own” the water provinces adjacent to their land provinces. It wasn’t a huge deal, I just mention it is a quirk that came to me in this game.

  2. I’m also really curious about the thought behind Nate’s decision to attack me. I’d sort of be interested in having a “cooler heads” conversation about it. I’ve honestly never been able to see how it made sense or resulted in anything but a win for Scribble. I’m no longer upset about it at all. Some things were hinted at a few days ago though, and I’d just like to explore a little bit.

  3. Sharaleo is one of my favorite people now. I’ve never had any interaction/opinion of him beofre this game, but I found his poise and demeanor in this game to be inspiring. I now try to keep his example in mind when I get frustrated with Dom 3 stuff.

I still want to post a short AAR and address a few comments that I’ve been holding off on. Maybe later :P

I think the VPs are on the caps. I always fail at basics like this, but my understanding was that this was not going to be the case. If I misunderstood this, then I apologize for the intrusion.

Kill Scribble Quick Wrap

I played terribly both micro and strategic. My strategy was an early attack using my powerful troops, an awake combat pretender and a single path of research. I should have rushed Mictlan but I didn’t b/c I wussed. No reason not to use my combat pretender to squash the dominion poor ?Nate and then followup. Instead, I dithered and allowed Nate to attack me. Then I got in a staredown with Abyssia so I was a bit trapped. The setup hurt a bit since I was trying to take out a neighbor and Scribble had an even better setup. Same high dominion and immortal awake pretender.

Then I screwedup letting my pretender got cursed and he got diseased which meant he was useless. I tried to shift strategy but it was too late and leading to a bad war with Scribble, who played great. Scribble’s build gave him a solid pretender and made it very tough to invade. I do think the map favored him b/c I had to fight him on a 1 hex front and he could go water. But overall, he rolled.

The Abyssia thing was tough b/c we had a nebulous relationship. I changed some agreements on him b/c I realized his agreement was putting me in a way that only he could win. And I was one of them who said he couldn’t have water next to me, b/c I don’t like anyone next to my capitol.

I’m bummed about screwing up the communion. I’m not very good with blood but I enjoyed it. I need to play more single player so I can remember not to do stupid stuff like attacking a curse ready indy with a combat pretender! Scribble did a great job making enough deals early and figuring out how to crack DFS, who also did a nice job wiht a valiant defense with Pythium.
