I thought I’ve played a lot of games. This thread has mostly become screenshots of games I’ve never played and in some cases never even heard of. I’m pretty sure it used to contain more mainstream games.
Never heard of Fez?
I dunno. Looking back over just the last four entries, we’ve had Fez and an Oddworld game, which I wouldn’t expect everyone to recognize, but should at least ring a bell. And then two indie games that elicited a lot of interesting guesses. I don’t expect to know most of the games–how could I? I’m really glad that we get a very diverse set of games showing up here, and frequently I learn about games I didn’t know about and wish I did (e.g., Abyss Odyssey).

I “knew” it was Fez from the first frame and I only played 2 minutes of it :’(

I heard of Fez, I said I haven’t heard of some of them.
Fez: never played
Warning Forever: never heard of
Reassembly: never heard of
Heavy Bullets: never heard of
Odd World: Never played
G-Police: Never heard of
Dessert Strike: Never played
Odd World: Never played
Creeper World 3: never played, but I did play an earlier one
Interloper: never heard of
Super Robot World: never heard of
Kung’s Fury: never heard of
Rise of Nations: I played it
That would be like the movie frame game being limited to Summer blockbusters. Sure, it’s good to have one every now and then, but I think we can spread our net a bit wider than that. Obviously some of the more easily-recognisable games have already been used, but I think most people are selecting games - even indie games - that have had plenty of coverage and a decently high profile. Fez and Oddworld are about as high profile as indie games get, to be honest. I could easily select Kult: Heretic Kingdoms and have nobody guess it, but that would be boring. It’s also why we should follow the movie game rules of “losing” if nobody guesses your game, to avoid exactly that.
Every so often there will be games - even several in a row - that you won’t have played or possibly even heard of. That’s fine, just sit that one out - like we all have to do sometimes - and try the next one, or look for clues and try and figure it out (a bit of research isn’t again the rules, as long as you’re not using GIS).

What’s well-known to one person isn’t always the same for everyone. For instance, I think pretty much everyone who was in the old Home of the Underdogs community would have known The Dark Eye when I posted it. Granted, I did choose a somewhat tricky screenshot. But at the same time, I had people say they’d never heard of it.
Besides, half the fun of this thread (for me) is seeing games I’ve never heard of, or at least never seen screenshots of, and occasionally looking into them afterwards. And on rare occasion, tracking them down and trying them.
Well no, it would be like lots of arthouse movies with the occasional Summer blockbuster in between. Now it appears to be all arthouse, with an occasional old blockbuster in between.
Mind you, that’s fine by me. I know I’m not a hardcore gamer, hence I wont recognize most games in here. And I also understand it’s more fun picking a somewhat obscurer title that runs for a while than something everyone recognizes at first glance. Still, some obscure screenshots of recent, well known games could be fun too?

I dunno, in the last 25 we’ve had:
Ocarina of Time
Syndicate
Rise of Nations
Dawn of War 2
Bioshock Infinite
Splinter Cell: Blacklist
and Sid Meier’s Pirates
for clearly major titles.
Fez
Desert Strike
Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath/ New and Tasty
Pinball FX2
Kameo
and Road Rash
for arguably major titles, or at least well known minor ones. I dunno, I don’t see this being more obscure than usual. Except you Juan. You know what you did ;)
Well, out of the 270-odd games chosen sofar, I played less than 10%. Out of the last 60, only about 5 %. Obviously that says a lot about me and my gaming: I didn’t play the very early games, I don’t play many indies and lately I don’t play much at all. However, there’s still over a 100 games in my steam account that I did play and most of those haven’t been in this thread.
I guess that basically just means there’s a hell of a lot of games… :-)

Ha, well not much different here. About 20% played, relatively stable. Honestly most of the games I have played have been the ones I’ve posted.
And, yeah, there are a lot of games :-D

I went through the list and I’ve played 38% of the games picked, so I guess it isn’t as bad as it seemed. The last batch have probably stuck in my head and made it seem worse because I’ve played 0 of the last 12 and not heard of many of them.
Meanwhile, Fozzle. Yer up.

I’ve played 28% of the games on the list but there’s a lot of AAA and console stuff I never played but still recognize just from media exposure or watching friends play. My Achilles heal is newer indie titles, especially if they don’t even look like they’re from this millennium.

Doh! Sorry. I have never actually made a correct guess in here. I will have it up shortly. is there a list of “Already been done’s” somewhere?
EDIT: NVM. Found it… in the OP…

OK, Here we go! In what game would you find this screenshot?

That looks more like Ultima IV with the diagonal water.
I never played U3, I see it also has the same diagonal water! So who knows.
