I googled it, I was playing mostly PC games around the time it came out and was still reading PC magazines every month but I’ve never heard of the game.
Nothing about either of these screenshots makes even the remotest amount of sense.
The second screenshot looks vaguely familiar, like I probably saw it on a shelf at Babbage’s in the 90s or something. Definitely never played it though.
Sid Meier’s Sim LSD Trip 2000?
Just teasing, but my favorite part of this one was carefully cropping the main character to see if we’d get it at that point. :)
I think a friend of mine had this one. Neuromancer or something like that.
Getting closer…
I’d pull the plug on this one, but I won’t have another frame ready to go until tonight, so I’ll leave it open until then in case somebody can come in and claim it.
Ok, so the game was Chronomaster, a late era adventure game, as evidenced by the weird pre-rendered 3d sprites. While I remember it somewhat fondly, I can safely say that it was…not great. It was a huge bloated mess, with many of the sins of the era in full effect. Extensive voice over (by an impossibly bored Ron Perlman, and a fairly game Brent Spiner), huge nonsensical puzzles, and worlds that it took simply ages to traverse.
The Djinni puzzle is one that I’ve remembered pretty vividly. They ask for the “dates of fasting”, and there’s another screen where there are about 20 weird crystal ball things with symbols on them. Either the instruction manual or the in-game encyclopedia had a glossary that listed the significance of each symbol, some of which represented various holidays. Some of those holidays were fast days in their respective religions. Thus: dates of fasting. Ugh. I think I solved it by just trial and error testing each one by save/reloading them , and didn’t realize the solution until much later.
The game is series of little virtual-reality worlds that you have explore and fix. The second shot was from a world that was explicitly built to be a nonsense world, which is why it’s nonsense. You can get a sense of it here.
Let’s try something that will probably be a little more recognizable:

If by “more recognizable” you mean “not recognizable at all”, I agree!
So, wild guess… uh… Metroid?
Sadly, I don’t recognize that one either. :(
Bah, you guys are making me all self-conscious about my game picks now!
Some context:

Almost looks like a sci-fi take on the Gold Box games. Ummm… Dark Sun?

Argh. Wish I’d seen this earlier. I knew it was Chronomaster from the second cropped image (with the dude). As for this new one, I know it too. rowe33’s got this.

Which, FYI, Buck Rogers was :)
Yes!
Specifically, Buck Rogers: Matrix Cubed (which is available on the
internet archive DOS games, but I wasn’t able to actually get it to work, as you need to spend like 30 minutes building characters before you can play).
As mentioned, it was an SSI game…in spaaaaaace.

I have no idea why I didn’t play that more - loved all the other Gold Box games but I think I just tinkered with Buck Rogers. Will put something up at lunch!

Here we go - probably won’t be too hard for anyone who’s played it:

Skyrim, but I don’t recognize that particular mod.
