Honest question: specific vulgar language aside, do people this that a nominee expressing this sentiment would have torpedoed a political campaign 30-40 years ago? As a pessimist, I tend to think not, but I’m not much of a historian of political scandals.

One thing that weirds me out about this is how much emphasis people seem to be putting on the “she was married” angle, as though sexual assault against single women is OK. I can also see the “married women” angle being a particular problem historically.

I dunno. Maybe I’m looking for a silver lining in this (aside from the obvious), as an indication of how much progress has been made and how quickly.

Remember, the big stink about Bill Clinton was that he cheated on his wife. It was such a big deal he lied under oath to avoid telling the truth about it. They tried to nail him with the perjury, but that wasn’t their original goal, it was that he cheated. They were fairly flabbergasted that most people didn’t really care. Hell, they’re STILL talking about it right now.

I suppose that’s true. I hadn’t really considered any of the context for those statements, and bragging about attempting to cheat on your wife (ignoring, for the moment, everything else about Trump’s marital history) would probably have caused quite a stir.

Now to be fair it isn’t all about stupid things Trump said. On the other hand, I don’t think anybody could have predicted the sheer quantity of stupid things he said, or the immense stupidity.
