In all fairness, there is a long list of Republican office-holders who probably would agree with that statement.

I mean, they’ve said worse. Like Todd “Legitimate Rape” Akin

People that fail biology 101 probably should not qualify for running for the Senate.

Elitist fake news science!

Why is he on about birth control? Are his constituents Catholic?

Reported a couple of these already.

Oh good, I was just working on that, too.

What’s illegitimate rape again? When a woman accuses the star quarterback of rape or do I misunderstand?

It’s the red dress kind of rape.

According to Akin and his ilk, rape is only legitimate when there’s an assault such as when the man takes a woman forcibly and she screams and tries to fight back, but is unsuccessful. Like when a guy in a ski mask with a gun or knife drags a woman into a back alley and tears off her dress etc.

Date rape, or if the guy doesn’t physically force himself on the female, is just a sign of a woman having loose morals. She effectively “asked for it” by drinking or putting herself into a compromising position.

It’s a gross way of thinking.

What makes his argument grosser is that, if you buy in to his “if it’s real rape, the body won’t let you get pregnant”, his logic would mean that if a woman gets pregnant by forcible rape, she secretly wanted it. That argument alone makes me want to punch him in the face.

Akin lost a race he probably would have won because of that comment, so it was a punch in the face, so to speak.

What amazes me is how that remark cost him a Senate seat yet Trump said one outrageous thing after another and became President.

I think Akin still lived in a universe where he felt that comment was something that had to be backpedaled from.

Trump’s generally unapologetic nature (he did sorta apologize for Grab ‘em By the Pussy, but it was a one-and-done thing) is a plus in his supporters’ opinion. Chutzpah apparently counts for something.

But y’know, some Russians are still nostalgic about Stalin, so… humans = broken

2008 (Sarah Palin being enough to almost disqualify the guy who picked her for VP) and 2012 (“legitimate rape” comment causing Akin to lose the race) feel like a completely different era to me.

“And when you’re a star they let you do it. You can do anything.”

Yes, this is the part that is possibly the most fucked up. It betrays some kind of fundamental failure to understand basic biology.

That’s the trick. Akin was neither rich nor a TV star, so he couldn’t get away with being a terrible person.

And he stopped there. Part of the Trump experience was always that he’d do or say something else outrageous before the opposition could get up a real head of steam about the last one.

He might be about to discover the limit to that strategy, though I wouldn’t bet on it yet.

The White House did incorrectly add a comma after ‘expansion program’, so there’s that.
