The issue is that his base won’t win him the presidency. Not even close.

And this is exactly why the destruction of the Republican party cannot be rebuilt. Their media outlets have created the Trump monster and his followers and there’s no way out. It’s not the party that needs restructuring but Fox & talk radio.

I think that you are right that it entirely helps him with his base, but the major thing is that his base is not the Republican Party circa 2012 elections. His base is a fraction of that group (maybe 38% of primary voters is a reasonable wild ass guess with the caveat that primary voters aren’t the same distribution as general election voters).
That’s not atypical in and of itself. What is atypical is that he doesn’t give a care in the world about anyone outside of that narrow base. He’s a salesman closing the deal with his customers and trying to convince them to buy the extended warranty, under-body spray rust protectant, laser etched vin number in the window glass (wtf is the point of that), fabric protection spray, and a rear spoiler. He doesn’t care about the people who didn’t buy a car from them. They might as well not exist to him. He’s got his sales audience’s focus and that’s all that matters.
And the other parts of the circa 2012 Party have no clue what to do about this. They can’t compromise on positions because Trump doesn’t care about bringing them into the fold. But if they disavow him then they lose his 38% that they have always counted on in the past. He’s the Tea Party Senators who are fine with nothing getting done because they have their base and that’s all they care about (for reelection for them, for ego and future merchandise sales for him) and don’t value anything the more moderate base can offer them.
I don’t feel bad for any of the moderates stuck in the middle because they caused this in so many ways. And in my mind the fact that they built a narrative of how Government Can’t Help People and then have actively and knowingly impeded Government from helping people is just horrific. It is one thing to disagree with how to help people, it is another to knowingly screw people over to try and score points. Their plans have backfired now because they have ignored all the signs that their narrative has changed into Government Including Ourselves Can’t Help People. They can go down with this ship or they can repent and try and actually do the job of government and win people back.

This is awesome how Hewitt tries to cover for Trump, and give him an out… but Trump is like, “FUCK THAT NOISE. HE STARTED ISIS!”

It emphasizes that Trump is focused solely on what his audience likes, not what is true. That’s his defense. Hewitt is telling him he’s got it a bit wrong, and Trump’s response is, “but… people like it!”
He’s an entertainer. The Daily Show made a good point last night – Trump makes more sense if you judge him as a standup comedian, not a politician.
Apologies if it’s been linked here already, but Wonkette had a great article along those lines.
The intern in charge of CNN’s chyrons is my new hero.
The parentheses usage in these instances has been just so wonderful.
I love the last response.
What…what is he…I don’t even…

He sounds like an 8 year old in these interviews. “Validate me! Tell me what I said makes you happy! If it doesn’t make you happy, screw you, I’m taking my ball and going home. I’m happy there anyway”.
Also, when he says “He shouldn’t have gotten in the way he got out”, is he implying to Obama invaded Iraq?
It’s like Ron Howard from Arrested Development is narrating the 2016 election.
Also, when he says “He shouldn’t have gotten in the way he got out”, is he implying to Obama invaded Iraq?
I think he misspoke and then immediately corrected himself.
Who knows, though. It’s all a word salad and I’m losing interest in harming my brain cells by trying to parse his incoherence. I like my brain cells.
Also, Racter for president!
Can I contribute to the Kickstarter that’ll make this a reality?

Trump in 2008:
But paying attention to history is not really the point for The Donald.
Trump himself argued repeatedly for the US to leave Iraq back in 2008.
“First, I’d get out of Iraq right now,” Trump said to British GQ
in a 2008 interview. “And by the way, I am the greatest hawk who ever
lived, a far greater hawk even than Bush. I am the most militant
military human being who ever lived. I’d rebuild our military
arsenal, and make sure we had the finest weapons in the world. Because
countries such as Russia have no respect for us, they laugh at us. Look
at what happened in Georgia, a place we were supposed to be protecting.”
Later, Trump said he wished Arizona Sen. John McCain, whom he was
backing in the election, had supported pulling troops out of Iraq
faster.
“I wish he would promise to get us out of Iraq faster,” said Trump. “I am not in love with that aspect of what he represents.”
Those comments echoed similar remarks in March 2007 when he said forces should be immediately withdrawn from Iraq.
“You know how they get out? They get out,” Trump said to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “That’s how they get out.
Declare victory and leave, because I’ll tell you, this country is just
going to get further bogged down. They’re in a civil war over there,
Wolf. There’s nothing that we’re going to be able to do with a civil
war. They are in a major civil war.”

Trump has learned that he can say anything and get away with it. He has defined truth as what ever he deems it to be and if you do not understand why its the truth, then you have a comprehension issue. Future points to be made include placing Hillary on the grassy knoll in Dallas in 1963 and exposing Obama for discriminating against himself on the internet (he invented the “Thanks Obama” meme!) Oh and that Hillary is secretly a lizard person disguised as a human and part of a worldwide movement to subjugate the human race for use as both slaves and livestock.
Technically, Hillary’s faction wants to use us as slaves, whereas the splinter-group of the lizard-people that Ted Cruz belongs to wants to raise us as foodstuffs.
Kinda like the Ur-Quan Kzer-Ka and Kohr-Ah!
People keep saying this as if it is true, but by every measuring metric we have, it isn’t true. Trump is indeed saying anything, but he is not “getting away with it.” His statements have made it very unlikely he’ll win in November.
If the idea is that Trump can say anything he wants and his most ardent loyalists will buy it, that is probably true. Thankfully at this point it doesn’t appear there are enough folks in that category to get him elected.
