Prepared remarks, He got a speechwriter that he’ll listen too, apparently.

Yeah, he read a prepared speech and stayed on message… FOR ONE DAY.
He’s done this before.

Couple of things on that speech:

If you read it and try to divorce yourself from the person giving it and try to forget every insane thing that has already happened…it’s a surprisingly good stump speech. It is in many ways the perfect speech for an “outsider”. The question is, can he sustain this for more than a day and even if he can has enough damage been done to him that he can’t win regardless of what he says or does? I don’t think he can sustain this and even if he did I think its just too far gone for him. I don’t think anyone beyond his core supporters care at this point what he has to say and for the rest of us, this just makes him look even less authentic.

What do you have to lose by trying something new?

That to me was always his most effective argument. I think had he been giving this speech for the past 6 months he would be at least tied in the polls with her right now.

I don’t see the perfection in his speech. He’s going to end the violence and chaos by using the dictatorship powers he doesn’t have? He’s going to help African Americans living in poverty by targeting immigrants, a move that the African American community isn’t buying. He says he speaks the truth in one speech while continuing to sell lies everywhere else? We’re only thinking it’s a good speech because he stayed on message, but that doesn’t make his message better, and that doesn’t mean the next thing out of his mouth won’t be some insult or dismissal or another flailing across the stage to humor his nearly all white rallies.

As for what do we have to lose, everything? Not everybody in the country thinks our country has gone to shit. What exactly is he selling to people who aren’t angry and don’’ want to burn everything down?

I’m not saying hes right or that I agree with him at all. All, I’m saying is that this message that he gave yesterday, divorced from the person giving it, is an effective message if you are trying to run as an outsider. Especially given the vulnerabilities of Hillary. And had be giving speeches like this, rather than what he has done for the past few months, this would be a totally different race right now.

I’m under the impression the Trump campaign is trying to reach beyond his base. If that’s the case, I am not sure pulling back on insults and not slobbering all over yourself every time you mention a group that isn’t white is enough. I am absolutely sure he’s pulling in some people who like him already but are having a hard time hitting the submit button while he acts like a awful human being… but what group do we think he’s trying to get with that speech that he doesn’t already have?

Yep, the Clinton ad pretty much writes itself.

Most of the Trump voters are not in fact desperate enough to risk it all - they’re in love with telling themselves that they are, but in fact they make more than the average Clinton voter. Start saying, “Trump’s reckless plans to repudiate the national debt will lead to higher taxes and missed Social Security payments” and see how many want to roll the dice on Mr. Craycray.

I think you have far too high an opinion of the average American voter.

White people in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. I think there were enough of them open to a message like this had he been giving it since he won the nomination. The reality is that he chased away so many people that he is going to lose states that should have been locked in for him and it’s likely impossible for him to come back in the states he has to win.

The “I can’t vote for Hillary” people. And there are a lot of them who will either stay home, or vote for Stein, Johnson or Trump.

I agree, It’s actually a pretty good speech, and his delivery was strong. While not as convincing of a liar as Bill Clinton he is much better than Hillary.

If he had been given that speech early in the general maybe right before the convention. Then stuck to it minus the apology part,. after all a person as great as Trump only needs to apologize once a year, I do think the race would be closer.

I still wouldn’t have vote for Trump, however if had a campaigned like this during the general, he probably could have convinced me not to vote for Hillary,

In some ways it’s an indictment of the Democrats (or the system as a whole), in that someone can plausibly argue that change, any change at all, is better than the status quo, even when the change that’s promised is either ill-defined, ill-intentioned, or ill-conceived.

Trump to African American: “What do you have to lose? You’re living in poverty. Your schools are no good. You have no jobs,”

Dude has to be sabotaging his own campaign on purpose right? Right?

As with other things he says, “what do you have to lose?” applies more to himself. What with being at 0% support among African-Americans in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

One of my favorite quotes:

It’s like covering a hurricane that makes landfall on a daily basis.
So when Trump says of illegal immigrants “they all have to go,” don’t overlook the fact that under his plan almost all would be able to immediately return—and stay.

This means there is very little difference between his plan and what John Kasich and Jeb Bush are supporting.
But he totally isn’t pandering.

In case anyone was worried that post-campaign-shakeup Trump would be all teleprompters and bland generalities, he began the morning by tweeting that Morning Joe is a “clown.”

Great piece, thanks.

“It’s like covering a hurricane that makes landfall on a daily basis.”

Imagine this clown as president.
