He got in a terrible fail state called Settling with Power or a Vortex Ring State. These are two different things and they will F you up when you’re flying choppers.
Settling with power happens when there is not enough power available to arrest the descent or the application of more power will lead to a VRS. The pilot should have come in shallower and with more forward motion on the machine.
VRS is what happens when the air that’s set in a swirl by the rotor forms a ring that suddenly robs the helicopter of lift. It suddenly drops. This happens when a lot of power is applied while flying very slowly or hovering. The only way to rescue the machine is to slide out.

Well, discourse needs to do some work to link these tenor gifs directly as gifs. There’s probably an embed meta tag they put on the page to make them shitty video players instead of just being gifs, sigh. Gfycat has the same problem. Imgur used to be the best but they’ve been making a lot of changes too…
My Chris Farley gif above is from Tenor, but I saved it locally then posted it to the forum so it seems to work right.

I find the process of using gifs on message boards to be a PIA anyway.
I see some WEBM and MP4 animations. I’m sure it’s the forum software that is converting the GIFs to these formats.

How are they supposed to sell their website to Facebook if they don’t have a lot of stored personal information to sweeten the deal?
As mentioned in the Social Media P&R thread, they do tracking of where the images end up, which is more data for the overlords.
