RIP my google search history now
Not really 2021, but this story about Jimmy Carter is pretty amazing and something I’d never heard before.

Not really something you would think was conducive to living forever.
Yeah, Carter is a good guy overall, worthy of a lot of respect regardless of one’s political pedigree. As they say, they don’t make 'em like they used to.
Voting against him for Reagan in 1980 remains perhaps my only political regret.
Pretty amazing that a guy with that in his past is the oldest ex-President ever, at 97. He must be doing something right!
Or the radiation gave him superpowers.

I seem to remember reading something as a kid, in someplace like the National Enquirer, about Jimmy Carter going canoeing and being attacked by a swimming rabbit. Also Jimmy Carter filing an official UFO sighting report. And almost choking to death on a peanut. I’m pretty sure those were all Jimmy Carter stories I read in publications of questionable reliability.
But now I’m wondering why I those stories didn’t also tell me about him bravely fixing a busted reactor like Spock in Star Trek II. That’s way cooler than fighting a river-rabbit or seeing an alien spaceship!

It does seem to be a basic failure of political myth-making. Who knew it was Carter and not Reagan who actually shot Liberty Valance?!

Thank you, @RichVR! I always figured that was something I misremembered or was confusing with something else. I should have guessed it was a story passed around among drinking buddies before making it’s way into the public.

The Carter story was memorable because this had just been out and there were a lot of killer rabbit/tomato crossover jokes.
