I found this written by a Stardock mod in Oct, 2007:

The version of SR2 we sell at TotalGaming.net does not use StarForce. The retail edition does, however.

I assume that applies to the Impulse version as well.

Thank you! I briefly checked out the demo for this months ago, but ended up forgetting about it. I’ve recently been looking for a good game for my laptop, though, and I believe this fits the bill perfectly. And it’s not often you see a 90%-off deal!

Wow. I’d resigned myself to never finishing SR2 because of the Vista problems, but at $3.99, I can’t resist.

Stardock puts a note on the product description pointing out any DRM it comes with, and there wasn’t anything listed for this one. I’ve already installed it and checked Device Manager for Starforce and it isn’t there. :)

The Impulse version definitely does not have starforce. That is an absolute STEAL at $3.99. Probably the gaming deal of the year.

It’s a terrific game that was screwed over by its DRM. Now that Stardock has taken care of that and dropped the price to Big Mac levels, there’s no reason any gamer should be without it.

Just discovered it can run at 800x600, which means I’ll have to test it on my netbook later…

This will be the third time I buy it, but I want the expansion pack. 4 bucks is a no-brainer.

I bought the Starforce edition used and grabbed Reboot from Impulse for $20. The new executable removes Starforce. I briefly thought about buying the complete pack to rid my computer room of more DRM, but even at $4 it’s not really worth the effort.

Oh, the complete edition includes the expansion? Hmm…I may buy it just for that.

I just loaded it up and I can definitely confirm that it’s the Reboot version.

I use Linksys Powerline Ethernet adapters to wire up parts of my house that are far from the router. I also have a “Wireless-N” router for wireless (mostly for laptop web surfing) but for reasons already discussed in this thread I don’t use it for anything that needs high throughput. Powerline Ethernet isn’t as good as gigabit connections directly to everything but it is still a whole world better than wireless (even N) for streaming video, etc. and was a lot easier to set up than running wires all over my house.

Amazon has Sacred 2 for $35. Buy it, then weigh in on whether it deserves to be on Tom’s Top 10 list!

I’d wanted to ask someone about that option. How long have you been using them?

I have to admit to having some superstitious paranoia about them - vague concerns I can’t name explicitly. Maybe something about power surges, disruption, or cosmic imbalance.

But they do pretty well, eh?

They work fantastically well for me… never had a problem with them at all and I’ve been using them for about a year now. They do work much better than wifi here when streaming video, transferring large files, etc but I’m only a single data point and I live in a fairly modern Southern California house so I guess YMMV if you live in one of those old timey houses where they don’t even have grounding pins on the wall outlets or if the outlets you’re trying to connect are chained through multiple circuit breakers.

fukken bought!

Don’t have those issues, exactly … Couldn’t hurt to try.

Thanks for the advisement, CC0.

Very interesting stuff. I’m content for the moment with wireless for my downstairs stuff (my desktop is upstairs hooked directly to the router via cable) but it’s good to know about a viable alternative.

Thank you, Internet, for telling me that Red Octane has some groovy GHWT bundles going on right now. With the coupon code GHWT15 for $15.00 off, finally I’m getting GHWT for a price I’m willing to pay: $30. Even if I do have to put up with an extra wired Xplorer controller.

Best Buy has a RZGC $20 off coupon (expires 12/14) for Mercenaries 2 (console only), Guitar Hero III w/Les Paul controller ($60), and GH Aerosmith Special Edition w/wireless controller ($50 for all versions).

Wow, those Impulse prices are amazing, especially for SR2. I’m tempted by Supreme Commander.
