Say I had $20 to spend on the Stategy First sale, and I have not played any of their games. On what should that $20 be spent?
Without knowing what you like that’s kind of hard to answer. Dangerous Waters, for example, would keep you busy for months if you like that genre, but would be a total waste of money if you don’t.
Absolutely buy Ghost Master. It’s a lot of fun for me, and if you don’t happen to agree…well, it was $2.50. Sacred Gold’s also probably worth $5. Jagged Alliance 2 Gold is a classic -but- I hear the Steam version doesn’t work properly.

Steam’s killing me. I was actually kind of happy (In a strangely disappointed way) when last weekend’s sale was Tomb Raider and I didn’t give a damn to even try it, then they hit me with this. Thinking about blowing $30 on Sacred Gold, Disciples 2 Gold, Jagged Alliance 2 Gold, Ghost Master, Alien Shooter Vengeance, and Darkstar One. The only one I 100% know I’ll enjoy is Ghost Master because I already own it, but the rest are cheap enough and sound interesting enough that they got swept into my pile. Now comes the part where I wander around forums and review sites and see if I can cut that pile down some.
I wonder why the other online retailers don’t do sales as often or as big as Steam. I went from almost never buying things on Steam to buying from them regularly since they’re cheap enough I don’t feel bad about not buying a retail box, and cheap enough I buy things I wouldn’t have otherwise. Like Darkstar One, the reviews weren’t very great, but it’s $5 for a game in a genre I’m at least slightly interested in, so I’m strongly considering buying it.

Well the steam sale over the holidays had the Strat first pack for like I think 50 bucks? I thought it was a steal. Burnout UC is an awesome game and you get live achievements for it as well so its win win!
This week’s Deal of the Week on Xbox Live is Penny Arcade Episode 1 for 50% off. ($10 instead of $20). Is it worth the time? Would anyone here recommend the game?

And speaking of the Strategy First sale, which Flatout was any good?

First Flatout was amazing. Second had more “stuff” but lost a bit of the indie spirit (and original physics model) that made the 1st so good.
As part of this sale they are offering all 26 games for $75. Less than $3 per game.
The last thing I need is to add 26 games to my backlog, but my willpower to resist is fading.
I have most games already (although as retail versions on discs) so I decided to resist but it’s hard.
I picked up Alien Shooter though since it’s a quick fix game like RIP etc. to blow off some steam once in a while and it was dirt cheap. :)

Ended up talking myself out of Darkstar One. Disciples 2 and Jagged Alliance 2 both sound like good strategy games I missed when they were new, so I’ll give them a whirl now. Alien Shooter looks right up my alley for cheap shooty games. Ghost Master is just a “What the hell, might as well have it on Steam too”. Sacred Gold I’m really iffy on. Diablo 1 and 2 were the only games of that genre that really stuck with me. Titan Quest came close, but it was too long for me. It discouraged replaying in my mind since changes in scenery didn’t come as fast as Diablo 2, less monster variety, and so on. Since I’m a bit picky for that kind of game I almost booted it out, but decided against it because what the hell, $5.
Quick question for the JA2 players, for a complete JA2 newbie who has played similar games (X-Com, Fallout Tactics, etc), should I play it normally first or with the 1.13 mod? It sounds like 1.13 would be the way to go, but when it mentions adding huge amounts of new weapons and ammo types I wasn’t sure if it would be too much except for hardcore players or something.

Anything in there that’s worth it?
Amazon DotD: Star Ocean(360) for $40.
Yes, I enjoyed it. It’s essentially a Japanese style RPG whose battles play out much like the Mario RPG games. That is, the battles themselves are a bit more interactive than Final Fantasy. They include things like timing blocks and 3 second mini-games to pull of special moves. If you dig the Penny Arcade humor, it’s fun way to spend about 5 hours.
I was interested in Darkstar One until I remembered why I didn’t use Steam for a while.
They still convert Dollar to Euro prices one to one it seems and I’m just not willing to accept that.
I still remember when they introduced that and there was a (too) small discussion about it. It basically was just the news of the day though, which everyone used as an excuse to rant. Even then I thought “soon enough everyone will have forgotten about it and will pay the higher prices”.
Even the Rock Paper Shotgun guys are guilty in this regard. After several promises to investigate the issue nothing ever came of it.
I just noticed that Amazon is selling the 120GB 360 hard drive for $125. That includes the transfer kit. I’ve also noticed that some third party sellers are willing to go lower than that for a new drive if you don’t want the transfer kit.
If you’re looking to upgrade, you need that transfer kit.

I mentioned this above, but you can get a transfer kit free from Microsoft. You just call them and tell them you bought a 60gb hdd, and you need a transfer kit. They will send you one. Didn’t ask any information from me either.
With the built in speakers this would make a perfect monitor for the xbox in the office.
