Believe me, I know. I was able to get rid of my copy for just a few bucks less than I paid for it.

Nevertheless, there may be some masochists out there.

So tell me, do you think you’re getting screwed when fast food coupons expire?

So tell me, do you pay a monthly fee for your food coupons?

Are you paying a monthly fee for these GameFly coupons? No, you’re paying a monthly fee for the service. The coupons are a bonus.

Other than due to some sense of entitlement, what exactly is wrong with these bonuses having expiration dates?

I hate it when I buy, for example, pet food at the grocery store, and after I pay they give me a coupon that would have saved me $1.00 on the very same pet food I just bought! Then I come back a month later to use the coupon, and it expired. Sigh.

It’s all about time management. See, what you got to do is enter your coupons in a spreadsheet, see, and then set up alerts as they get closer to expiration. Yeah.

Midnight: My wife is a total Coupon Queen. She comes home weekly with $200 in groceries that she paid $20 for. She works out certain deals where we end up getting paid to take items of the shelf. The downside to this is that we have 12 Blood Test devices for diabetes from Wal-Greens (We were paid $10 each for those with her coupons and some deal they had). We have like 30 bottles of shampoo (made $1 on each of those) and we have dozens of other things I can’t imagine ever using in my life time.

She subscribes to some sort of coupon newsletter that tells her which local stores are having sales, and she hoardes tons of coupons so she can use them during the sale. On top of this she is part of a couple ‘coupon trains’, where people drop coupons they dont want into an envelope and send them on to the next person, who takes what they want and puts in their own. Since many sales are regional a coupon might be pretty worthless in one place but perfect in another where an item is already 50% below shelf price.

It’s a hobby of hers I try to avoid, but it’s hard when you open the bathroom cabinet and see 25 tubes of toothpaste staring at you…

She doesn’t have a spreadhseet, but she has al alphabetical three ring binder for these coupons, and each leter of the alphabet is sorted by expiration date. it’s an insane system I only nod and grunt at when she giddily explains it to me.

That’s awesome, if a little scary.

It’s great that she’s saving you all this money, and apparently sometimes earning you some, but I hate to think of all that perfectly good stuff going to waste or expiring. Maybe give some of that toothpaste to the homeless shelter a couple of months before it expires?

Then don’t think about it. Stop trying to re-distribute my wealth.

Besides, unless someone can tell me what the code R5600348 means I can’t tell you when this stuff expires. I guess when it all turns into rubber cement and I throw it all away I’ll know.

Whoop!

Yes, I’m paying a monthly fee and continuing to subcribe to maintain my Level 3 “benefit” level.

There is no good reason for the coupons to expire. I’ve maintained the benefit level (meaning I’ve subscribed for X number of months in a row) the whole time, so why do the “benefits” expire? So long as I subscribe to GF, those coupons should remain active. There is absolutely no good reason for them to expire. Instead of being a real benefit they end up being a sales technique to prompt people to buy stuff they don’t really want in order to not lose the $5 coupon. It’s crap. I don’t know why you’d defend it. And no, it’s not a sense of entitlement. It’s actual entitlement. I’m paying for this service.

Yeah, the benefits are one of the few reasons I continue to subscribe and not cancel my membership during months that I know I won’t be able to play any Gamefly games.

For example, I’m going to go on vacation to Mexico June 20-28th. Then July 2-5th I’ll be in the Boston area visiting a cousin. Plus I’ll be busy playing Red Faction and maybe Prototype for the rest of the summer, probably. So I’ll probably hardly play any games from Gamefly. But I continue to subscribe, because their incentive is that I’ll get these benefits. With expiring coupons, I am re-thinking this whole thing though. It just seems like a bad idea. The benefits don’t really seem worth it. I really should just unsubscribe and subscribe again in the Fall or Spring.

You’re spending $22 (if you have two games out) every month just so you can continue to get a $5 coupon every three months? That’s poor money management.

There is no good reason for the coupons to expire.

How many coupons don’t expire?

I’ve maintained the benefit level (meaning I’ve subscribed for X number of months in a row) the whole time, so why do the “benefits” expire?

Only one minor bonus of being a long-time member expires. The more substantial bonus is the 10% discount on everything, which doesn’t expire.

And no, it’s not a sense of entitlement. It’s actual entitlement

What’s the difference?

You’re absolutely right. You’re paying for the service. And the service is delivering rental games to your mailbox. If you happen to sustain the membership, then you get a few minor perks, but I assure you, there is no way in which it is ever going to be cost effective to maintain your subscription for any reason other than to rent games.

And yes, that’s -exactly- what the $5 coupons are - an incentive to buy games from them, and within a certain time frame. That’s what coupons -always- are. And they virtually always expire, too. I just don’t get getting butt-hurt over a free bonus not being quite as useful as you’d like.

Realize that Gamefly was around for years before they started the loyalty program.

Anyone have any actual bargains to report? Anybody? Bueller?

I see Amazon is promising an “All Xbox 360 Gold Box Event” beginning Wednesday at midnight PST. Maybe there will be some good savings to be found there.

Gamersgate has relaunched their website and has Men of War for $11.99

http://gamersgate.co.uk/DD-MOW/men-of-war

Yeah, because having a bunch of stuff cluttering up your house that is of no earthly use to you, when it could be of some use to (no doubt less deserving) others, is “wealth.” Enjoy.

Did Gamers Gate go offline at some point? That is a great price on Men of War.

Weren’t you paying attention? We determined that a huge bargain for anybody subscribing to Gamefly over the next few months: Unsubscribe if you’re not planning on playing any rented games. It’ll result in huge savings!!
