And I am really tempted by that deal too except that just about every review I read said don’t bother unless you buy it for multiplayer. And multiplayer RTS games with me pretty much always equals Pogue Gets His Ass Kicked. So, yeah.
Crap. That’s gonna be hard to pass up. Do I have the willpower?
It has a pretty unique campaign system that you might enjoy. The multiplayer is pretty unforgiving, it’s true, but I liked the single plenty.
I played the demo a bit, and it seemed like the single player was just insanely unbalanced in favor of the end of level bosses, who had stupidly powerful abilities compared to my single little squad. Is this true in the main game, or are there ways to make it not into a game of frantically micro-clicking your troops?
(I’m thinking specifically of the orc who jumps and targets an area and decimates everything near where he lands… he took out whole squads at a time because, y’know, they move together so they’d tend to end up clumped and if I tried to use terrain to my advantage they had trouble pathing out of the way in time, and if I didn’t they took all sorts of attrition damage when he wasn’t jumping.)
Eh, the boss fights have lots of micro. They’re not great, but they are at least something different from standard RTS fare. Some of the bosses are more frustrating than others, but they’re all easily beatable, especially once you realize that you can just walk out of their little arenas to recharge and then go back in.
MP plays completely differently from the SP campaign. With the 1.5 version “There Is Only War” update being released soon (public beta concluded recently), MP will be even better than it currently is. In MP, my experience has been that success does not hinge so much on being able to micro your units’ abilities as it does on knowing what to field to counter your opponents’ units and having good situational awareness of the battlefield. You have more time to manage your troop movements and actions, since you don’t have to worry about base building. MP can be very frustrating at times, but it can also be very rewarding. Like most MP RTS games, though, playing with/against people you know is always more rewarding and less frustrating than playing with/against those who eat, sleep, and drink the game.
I see the GoGamer sale has X3:Terran Conflict 2.0 going for 19.90- not bad at all. I’ve been getting into that recently (bought it on Steam during the year-end sale last year). I’m almost tempted to pick up a disc-based copy for the printed manual (does anyone know first hand if it has one? One always has to check these days).
Beware, the DVD-based copy still uses TAGES DRM, but egosoft has always been good about patching the DRM out of their games after a year (which would make it this November or something).

Steam also has a weekend deal on X3: terran conflict and the expansion pack:

Good. You’re precisely who I had in mind.
The Steam version also uses the TAGES DRM, and it’s got one of those install limits everyone loves so much. Which means as tempted as I would otherwise be by that sale, no thanks.
Weekend Impulse Buys include:
Tilted Mill Complete collection $45 (Children of the Nile + Expansion, Mosby’s Confederacy, Hinterland - Orc Lords) : Not a bad deal for $45. I know Children of the Nile got good reviews, and many folks seem to have enjoyed Hinterland. I’ve no clue what Mosby’s Confederacy is like.
Paradox games are mostly 50% off. That includes some decent stuff like:
Sword of the Stars Ultimate $15
Argos Naval Yard expansion $4.50
Europa Universalis Rome Bundle $12.50
Europa Universalis 3 Complete $15.00
King’s Bounty : The Legend $15
Elven Legacy $15
Mount & Blade $15
Hearts of Iron $5
Steam also seems to have Mount & Blade for $14.99. I’d love to find a boxed copy for that price.
Screw that! Newegg has it for $5.99 with free shipping.

How about Amazon? They seem to have it for $9.75, plus shipping.
Thanks, Matt. Last time I checked Amazon for that, it wasn’t even listed anymore.

Ohhhh I take back what I said now! Now I have buyer’s remorse, and its your fault! :(
If anyone outside America wants to buy Dawn of Discovery from Steam, check Impulse first. The price is MUCH lower.
