That was yesterday’s deal of the day.
Aargh, too many games, too little time! I’ve never played Sacred Gold or any of the Disciples games, for instance.

FEAR 2 is only $24.95 at D2D this week. That is not a bad deal for the PC download version, as it has yet to go on sale anywhere else.

According to the Valve support page it activates on Steam, too:

Edit: Hrmm, maybe not, Steam’s saying invalid key.

Well you can buy Disciples 2 with both expansions for 20 bucks at Target anyways.

If you like turn based strategy and dark fantasy settings don’t miss out on disciples 2. I am still desperate for the third one to come out already.

Hmm, yeah a quick look at the Steam forums says that the retail key can be activated, but a D2D key cannot. Kind of a bummer, but still a good deal.
Why would I do that, when it looks like Disciples II Gold on Steam contains everything Disciples II-related and is going for a measly 10 bucks?
If I enjoyed HoMM3, would I like Disciples 2?
Probably. The series reminded me quite a bit of HOMM, though with combat somewhat reminiscent of Ogre Battle… Of course, it’s been years since I’ve played any of them. Solid games, though.
I sure didn’t. I finished HoMM3’s campaigns, but with Disciples 2? I couldn’t even figure out how to get past the first map. In some games that’s a recipe for me wanting to play them even more, but with Disciples 2, the combat and strategy portion all seem so much … simpler, the mechanics don’t seem as interesting, so I never bothered to find out why on earth the first scenario seemed unbeatable.
Most likely I was missing something important. Some game mechanic, or essential element that wasn’t explained in the game that was the key.
The strategic exploration side of Disciples is similar to HOMM, but the tactical battles are completely different. Units don’t move, there’s a forward and rear rank, and units level up based on XP rather than an outlay of money or resources (though money is needed to build the requisite upgrade structure in your home city).
If you dig turn-based strategy, then you’ll probably like Disciples. If you like HOMM and only HOMM, you might want to find the Disciples demo.
For everything Disciples II-related, you’re looking at Rise of the Elves ($10, after discount) and Gallean’s Return ($10, after discount). I.e., $20.
I’ll cast another vote for hating Disciples 2. Gameplay is very much “build a party, clear the map” and really didn’t seem to have a lot of strategy in it. It certainly isn’t similar to HoMM3, excepting the overland map, but I wouldn’t define that as heroes’ core feature.
Others like it though, so perhaps it’s simply that I was looking for a different game.

I liked Disciples because the parties were smaller, the art was better (and quite good, I thought), and you actually had to level up your parties through careful fights rather than just wait for gold to flow in so you could build a bigger stack. It was more of a puzzle - which way to go to upgrade rather than annihilate your stack - than a strategy game, though. If you lost your main stack via a bad move you were just about fucked, barring a miracle pulled by your secondary stack.
It got samey after a few maps, though. The difficulty of the “puzzle” shot through the roof and it stopped being fun. Still, definitely a good chunk of pseudo-strategic fun, for the right price, since you can try the various race, class, and campaign combos.

I’ll put in a positive vote for Disciples, in fact this conversation inspired me to download it onto my new computer from Steam.
Amazon DotD: Call of Juarez 2 for 360 for $30. Tempting.
That is tempting, but man, I really don’t have time for it.
