Just an FYI. The 1.3.0 D2D patch is available. Not on the D2D patches page, of course. It’s buried in the Gamespy Fileplanet area. http://www.fileplanet.com/search.aspx?searchtype=2&q=frontlines%3A+fuel+of+war

This is a reminder of why I don’t buy more D2D games. The service sucks. Oh well. It was only $5.

It does have a decent trade-in value at Gamefly ($12.50) if you don’t like it - worth trying out at least I suppose. All the Best Buys around here are out of stock though.

So now that I know that the patch is available, is the game worth the $5? Still a decent player base etc.?

I remember Tom really enjoyed the singleplayer. Don’t think too much, it’s only $5.

I tried the “patches for download clients”. They didn’t work. The game claimed to patch fine, and then instantly crashed when started.

By that time I was so fed up with downloading 300-400mb patches … well. I’m not dealing with Direct2Drive ever again, basically. :P Not even for $5.

Just a heads-up: Kotaku is reporting a rumor that the Wii will (finally!) get a price drop to $200 at the end of September, according to this blurry photo of a TRU ad.

Trust me, its not Direct2Drive. Frontlines in general is just a huge bitch to patch. I bought it via Gamersgate, and still haven’t been able to get it patched to the newest version. Every time I follow the patch progression, one of them doesn’t work or says the game isn’t the right version.

Ehh, I don’t know about that. I got so annoyed with the digital copy that I picked up another one, a physical one, at my local used game store. It patched with no problems through .1, .2 and .3.

Of course I was so spent by that time I never actually played it… :P I think the grand total was 1.8 gigs worth of patches. Ridonkulous (and yeah, that’s purely Frontlines’ problem)!

Yeah my Frontlines patch folder has 2.18 gigabytes and it is 4 patches. Those devs are crazy.

Ye gods. Glad I didn’t spend more than $5 on Saints Row 2, it’s a complete mess. Performance is surprisingly bad for looking worse than San Andreas, and once you get the framerate in a decent way, it has bad stuttering while driving around. Almost can’t even drive because of it. Then I’m not sure if it’s the case for all copies of SR2 or if it’s another PC bug, but it seems like most of the character animations are running at double speed. Either the game’s massively fast and twitchy to the point of barely being able to control it, or there’s some other devilry afoot. Hopefully I can find some tweaks to make it more playable.

Nice character editor, though.

Looking worse than San Andreas?

Wii at $200. Huh, I thought that was going to be the launch price, for sure. I’ll get it when it drops some more.

Told ya…

Any word on sales for either The Beatles rock Band or the rockband 2 complete bundle for the 360 any time soon? I miss the $99 bundle on Amazon last week.

The textures and horrible bloom and post processing make everything fuzzy and washed out looking. When I’ve got the dynamic lighting enabled and turned all the way up it looks better, but then gets even jerkier and the stuttering seems worse. At what it’s semi-playable at, I preferred San Andreas.

Little bit of googling seems to imply the stuttering is related to hard drive bandwidth. Ugh.

That’s hyperbole. Sure, there’s some stuff that I think looks pretty bad but it’s far and few between. On a technical level, the art is mostly fine, it just doesn’t really have any aesthetic coherence other than “garish” unlike Rockstar’s excellent use of an era and place.

As far as technical problems with playing the game, there are plenty but most of mine were resolved once I OC’d to roughly 3ghz* and then the patch helped a bit with the loading problems. Performance varies a lot between individuals though, so take that with a grain of salt. It’s still a hell of a lot of fun on the PC if it works for you.

*Not a recommended solution.

Well damn it, I’ve got a dual core processor that runs at 3ghz anyway and it still stutters uncontrollably when driving. I have fiddled with the settings a bit more and got it looking better, though. But running it on the default medium setting isn’t pretty.

I totally agree with the guy.I have ALL GTA games installed right now (except for the first 2D one) and yep, to me San Andreas and maybe even Vice City looks better than SR2.SR2 is just so washed out super ugly, with ugly ass characters and…everything…ugh. And the stuttering ? hell yeah! And I also have 3.16ghz dual core. And the graphics is superugly even when everything is turned to maximum.

We tried to tell you all. The PC version of SR2 is horrendous.

On the Frontlines issue, I used the D2D patches at the link I supplied. It took forever to download and install it all, but I got it patched up to 1.3.0. Even then, the multiplayer is a wasteland. Last night there were 12 people online from what I could see.

I played the first four singleplayer missions. It’s pretty good so far. It’s a shame there are no bots to play with. I’d love to try the opposing side someday.

Even on the 360, the game is choppy. I’ve played both, and the performance is pretty equivalent on my 360 and my PC. The SR games push the limits.
