The Beast

Anyone else watching this? I’m kind of digging it. It definitely has some flaws, and the rookie is an amazingly bad actor, but (and I realize this might be the least likely phrase ever written) it is bolstered by a very, very good performance by Patrick Swayze.

I am, but the rookie is grating on me quite a bit - he seems to mumble all his lines. I’ll keep going a bit longer but I don’t see how this could work long term with this actor.

It’s nice to see D’Angelo get work though.

I’ve started to consider his bad acting part of the character. He sucks at everything, everything else as it is, so why should he be good at acting?

HUUUGE bump, but I just ran through this series on HULU.

I liked it a lot. The rookie does start off as a pretty bad actor, but he gets better. The one thing he can do well is a cocky smirk. He acts like an idiot a lot, but he’s successful enough that his overconfidence comes off as believable. He gets a lot of help from some strong writing, and a non-stop pace that doesn’t give you much time to think.

The case of the week stories are generally interesting enough, and there’s enough going on with the over-arcing plot to keep the story moving from episode to episode. That said there seemed to be a fair number of plot holes within the various twists and turns.

Really, what makes the show stand out from various other cop shows is Patrick Swayze. Roadhouse is a movie that I love, but it’s not a terribly serious movie that demands range from Swayze. In this series he perfectly portrays a morally ambiguous undercover agent. I’m sure most of this was due to his fight with cancer, but his pale, cracked, leather-like skin personified Charkles Barker. It looked like the man’s soul was rotting, and burning its way out through his skin.

I highly recommend anyone at least check the pilot out on Hulu. I’m sure the series wasn’t helped by having an AWFUL title (definitely worse than terriers) and being on A&E, but more people need to take a look.
