What about the single player component?
It’s pretty clear I’ll never be able to play online against any of your crazy fingers on fire MP players but still pretty much looking forward to the SP campaign …

25+ missions, possibly with side “quests” or submissions for each plus this is the first instalment of the series, supposedly SC2 will feature two more “expansions”.

MP wise, last night I was failing right and left miserably, mainly because I was straying from my set builds and trying other protoss tactics (DT rush, mass units, proxy zealot rush, etc).
I think some people just have good and bad days and if your focus is of SC2 MP isn’t a forgiving game where you can turtle your way to victory. That’s probably one of the turn off about SC for me, I’m a slow builder by nature, but other days, when your focus is on and you are doing great both macroing and microing, it’s a great experience.

A good tip I can give is that if you don’t feel comfortable with managing micro and macro go for some 2vs2 and set unit control to global so your ally can control your units and focus on your macro.
Also, unless you like the aggravation, don’t go 2vs2 random, find a good partner that when you underperform can help carry you (looking at you McKnight wink)

Protoss is pretty simple that way.

Early game: Bind all your Gateways to one key. If you get an early Robo, you can group that with your Gateways and Tab between them.

Mid and late game: All Warpgates are on W automatically. All Robos and Stargates go on one key, and then you Tab between the two types of units.

Thanks. That’s what a couple of friends said, that protoss was relatively simple in that aspect.

Can you make as many accounts/user names as possible? I’m not very creative at the moment so I would be unhappy to be stuck with a weird username connected to by b.net account… I just want to hop into a game now things have been downloaded and patched, but can’t think of a good screen/user name.

From what I can see, the nice thing about S2 multiplayer is that it tries really really hard to match you against equal skill opponents. It has different leagues, from the platinum (the pros with 150 APM average) to bronze and odds are you would find good balanced games somewhere in there.

The other aspect I really like about S2 is that it’s mainly a macro oriented game. Micromanaging is still nice but not nearly as important as making sure you have as many units as possible and of the appropriate type to counter your enemy. I now play in the silver league as my APM and micro skills are pretty horrible, but I got some great games and heroic wins just by focusing on the macro - with the enemy players usually being around my skill level as well.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, give multiplayer a chance as well, you might be pleasantly surprised. The single player I expect to be superb, of course.

You can’t change your name once you’ve created the account but Blizzard will be resetting everything before release so you don’t have to worry what you choose in the Beta ;)

Awww shucks Digby, your too kind. To be fair I was having a pretty atrocious night as well so it definitely wasn’t just you, although I am starting to get back into the groove of things so there’s that.

So with respect to this I found out something you can do to create a situation where you can actually spend that money. I was in a longish game last night and had tons of money and tons of units with little to spend my resources on. My opponent was in a similar situation with both our giant armies staring each other down. I can’t make units being at/near the cap, so I decide to try and put myself into a situation where I could rebuild my army quickly. I started using my Queens to spawn larva like mad at my hatcheries. I ended up with multiple hatcheries with 20+ larva at each. After our giant armies clashed and there was little left of either of us I was back at something like 150 supply of units in a matter of seconds and walked over my Terran opponent who now had nothing. Fun times!

If you end up floating a lot of minerals as Zerg, just throw down a Hatchery. Not even at an expansion, necessarily, just throw one down.

Did you read the last page?

Alright, so I can’t just make dozens of accounts like in WC 3 / D2.

Thanks

Yes, as presumably did the people who once again complained of being unable to burn off excess minerals as Zerg.

If you can’t get down any more expansions, another hatchery is fine, and only 450 minerals (counting queen).

I love pimping the Zerglings up. They work wonders on siege tanks! I like having a huge swarm of Zerglings and Hydralisks. The Zergslings circle the other guys army and the hydras pick them off. My only problem is remembering to get some higher tier anti-air, because those Battlecruisers fuck up my stat big time.

I don’t suppose I can waste a few days begging for a spare beta key?

I’ll be offering my other spare beta key to a friend at dinner tonight. If he doesn’t want it - and he probably won’t - it’s yours.

Just had a most aggravating moment: was 2vs2ing, managed to defend a large push from the enemy, had main base + 3 expansions all pumping and was more than half on the pop cap, about to push against them… “you were dropped”.
WHAT? My connection didn’t go down so it really was a “wtf!” moment.

Do you remember the name of the player Digby? That was a pretty common Bnet hack back when the Beta started up. If the hacker was losing you would simply be forced to disc, very very annoying. (Also a bit stupid seeing as the ladders aren’t permanent in the Beta but each to their own I guess?)

Oh and sorry I missed you. Unfortunately I was working, hope you didn’t get paired too horribly ;)

Nah, I played mostly 1vs1 to get some achieves under the belt (and new portraits) and only one of my 2vs2 failed miserably (silly terran ally only spammed Reapers even when his original rush was pushed back and the game had gone for 10 minutes…)

Thanks, you are my hero.

We can get new portraits? Aaaawesome I am so on top of that shit.

Oh and I properly lol’d at that, I told you that’s what most people do and why it’s easy to get back in the game after a reaper rush, they just never know when to stop. Also about 10minutes in would be a good time to prompt him that R is not the only key on the keyboard, and that D does occasionally like to be pressed aswell ;)

He was too busy trash talking the opponents, the silly bugger.

Right click on your portrait, select “change portrait” or similar and check what you can set. The portraits are actually unlocked by doing achievements. (win X games as Y race).
