Except to the extent they want shit to actually get done. In fact, they only have leverage to the extent they can maintain the position that they’ll insist on nothing instead of something, which is utterly fictional and everyone knows it. They’re holding a 10-high hand and bluffing even though everyone knows Manchin has aces and eights.

This. If there is a deal that Manchin and Sinema will support, and Schumer and Pelosi want it, the progressives will vote for it.

If that were the case, the tiny deal would have been passed unilaterally.

The fact that it hasn’t says something, if Pelosi could pass the tiny deal without the votes of the left, it would have been passed already.

She’s holding the tiny deal as leverage over Manchin and Sinema. It has nothing to do with the progressives.

Yeah, what scott said. Alstein, I think you misunderstand why the tiny deal has not passed yet. If Pelosi passed it right now, then Manchin and Sinema would let the larger deal die in short order. Pelosi is intentionally delaying the small deal for tactical reasons.

Happy Labor Day, probably not coincidentally the day that expanded unemployment benefits expire. Those benefits, along with things like the expanded child credit, have literally lifted millions out of poverty.

I’m not even sure at this point if any of that stuff will be in the reconciliation bill, assuming there is a reconciliation bill.

Oh, that reminds me, I can finally add my newest member to the child tax credit system.

Those payments don’t stop till the end of the year.

That’s not actually a payout, it’s a loan against your tax return. Which is better than nothing for millions of Americans, no doubt, but let’s be clear about what it is.

That really sells it short! They increased the size of the credit, so you get more money per child. They made it a genuine credit instead of a tax rebate, so you get the money even if you don’t have a tax obligation. They made it apply to more children. And they paid half the credit out over the course of the year, instead of making you wait until next year to get it. It’s more money going to many more people, some of which is paid sooner.

All the number increases happened last year though, no? The only thing new for 2021 is the early payout.

Not trying to make the perfect the enemy of the good here, so please don’t take this as an argument about how putting more cash in the hands of families with children (and honestly having kids is fucking PANDEMIC HARD MODE, fuck me) is a bad thing or “not enough” or whatever.

I have different rants for cowardly Dems not doing enough ;)

I don’t think so. Market Place did a fair number of reports showing a lot of lower income households getting the money for the first time in 2021. As mentioned by @scottagibson, before then, if you didn’t pay taxes, you didn’t get it, so it left a lot of people that need it most without it.

Some other changes that might be mixed in is free lunches for all households at School, which has been a bonus for us. We usually pack lunch for our eldest, but now she has a choice (without needing to spend any money she has earned).

I don’t think so.

For 2021 only, the child tax credit amount is increased from $2,000 for each child age 16 or younger to $3,600 per child for kids who are 5 years old or younger and $3,000 per child for kids 6 to 17 years of age. If you received your first payment in July, that means the maximum monthly payment for each child under age 6 is $300 and for each child age 6 to 17 is $250. Note that families with higher incomes won’t receive that much or could be denied the credit altogether, but most eligible parents will see a considerable bump in their child tax credit for the 2021 tax year.

It’s more money per kid going to more people for more qualifying kids, with some of it being paid early.

Good. Wonder why it took so long.

I think the Trump admin spent 4 years deliberately seeding every part of government with land mines and saboteurs. It doesn’t surprise me that it takes a long time to defuse them all.

IEDs. Idiot Executive Douchebags.

Let’s not sully the word “person” with an association to Kellyann Conway.

Maybe fame gremlin?

When people post tweets by Kellyann it’s like they are posting pics of their latest dump.

My dumps have substance.
