I get people donating to Harrison in SC, Gideon in Maine, and Greenfield in IA. Even Bollier in KS, Bullock in MT and Gross in Alaska. There were times when those races looked competitive.

As far as Bullock is concerned, all the Republicans apparently had to do was paint Bullock as a radical left-winger and an F rating from the NRA. The Dems message was more economic (Daines ties with China) and healthcare. In an environment where all you have to do is say someone is a radical…

A little weird to hear this after all the “It’s Trump’s party” / “Trumpism IS Republicanism” / “They’re all the same” rhetoric. Maybe that wasn’t from you, Scott, but if this becomes the common wisdom on the left it feels like a bit of a 180. (It’s what I was expecting the whole time. I think these guys always hated Trump and saw him as a burden they had to carry more than an ally or a boon.)

We are in a weird situation.

Each party is made up of diverse constituencies and interests, with internal struggles for domination. Neither party is anything like monolithic.

So the best way to unite for voting purposes is to focus on the evil of the other party, which is a lot easier to do if they are looked at as monolithic. In fact, the more fit, more likely to survive party is the one that does the better job of hating the enemy monolith.

But looking at the other party as, in any sense, a united monolith is a gross distortion of truth. And can lead to totally misreading what is actually going on.

How good a value are we talking? For everyday I buy a decent Spanish red called Protocolo that comes to $6.60 a bottle with case discount, so that’s about my speed.

Well, it’s more than that. It will run ~$16 a bottle, more or less. It’s a Venetian Valpolicella from a world-class winemaker. Not an everyday table wine price, but a great bottle of wine in the under $20 category. Also in that range, and slightly better, is Masi’s Campofiorin.

My everyday wine here is a Chilean Carmenere. I pay about $6.50 a bottle for it and absolutely love it.

I think they can both despise Trump as a cretin and a boor and also be in favor of virtually everything at the core of his belief system. They are all the same, which is not the same thing as saying that they ever liked Trump. It was more that they needed him to advance their agenda.

Edit: I’ll add that I think I’ve said before that someone like Trump — an anti-democracy authoritarian nationalist — was the logical end point of the GOP agenda over the last 40 years or more, but I don’t think I’ve ever said that it was Trump’s party, certainly not in the sense that people like McConnell were following Trump’s lead rather than vice versa.
