Of course, that is a part of it. But it generally takes quite a long time to get all the votes accounted for anyway, it is simply more tense when it’s close. No one notices how long it takes to finish up NY or TX.

The other thing is that heavily populated areas generally take longer, and this is not good optics. I mean, most people here enjoy conservative agony, but they feel much the same way NFL fans feel if every week the other team comes from way behind at the end. And this helps their leaders fire them up to see liberal victories as illegitimate.

But yeah, the large numbers of mail in magnifies all that. And turns liberals against each other for days, as things temporarily look a lot worse than they really are.

I’d love to see earlier counting of mail ins, but it will only half fix the problem, I think.

I turned 18 in 1980. My US-based worldview back then was that we were getting better. I grew to understand more fully in my 20’s and 30’s just how shitty this country was for a large number of people even during the “glory” days of the 50’s-70’s, but I still had a naïve idea that we were progressing, or that we wanted to.

But even in my late 50’s my eyes can be opened to new shit. I give Trump credit … he blew on the embers that have been there all along and gave new life to the half of the country that hates, and/or the half that is too ignorant to spend 30 minutes trying to understand issues. They watch fucking reality TV instead. They were relatively silenced for a while there, but they’re back and they’ve got their fire back. I am ashamed to admit that I didn’t realize it’s half of the country.

Another block of 4,400, this one closer to 50/50. Down to 95,519. It was from Tioga County which is Trump+51 so honestly that’s pretty good for Biden.

Edit: still a couple red counties need to report, but there’s still at least 150k from Philly and Delaware counties (both very blue).
