I could write a very lengthy post on the mindset of Maine voting, but in this case I think it came down to two things: 1. Mainers put a lot of value on being born and raised in Maine, and 2. they don’t like outsiders and especially don’t like outside money. I think both of those things really hurt Gideon even though neither makes practical sense. Maine has an unfortunate xenophobic streak that runs deep, especially in the rural areas.
