Beau’s not happy and I’m with him.
Good dude, who is, unfortunately, likely to lose a racist Jeff Sessions. But it’s Alabama.
Who the hell is this guy?
Yikes, my son lived on Pico until a few months ago.

That Beau of the Fifth video is great, with Beau pointing out that people using the “business won’t return to those neighborhoods” meme are missing or ignoring a lot of true, substantive subtext. Beau is correct that although unrest in those neighborhoods is likely to recur, that’s because the underlying racism, violence, and police brutality are also likely (or certain) to recur. That’s the true subtext in reality. However, I think Beau is himself missing some subtext about a lot of people who would believe or promote such a meme. Because I think a lot of the people spreading that type of meme don’t actually think about the underlying reality driving such unrest but rather just assume “those people are violent and will always be violent! See - they burn their own neighborhood down!” That IMO is the true subtext to that meme, psychologically speaking, for a lot of people.
Beau is an interesting voice b/c he speaks truth much of the time but does not AFAIK identify as liberal. His voice is very useful IMO but I also feel like he gives a lot of folks on the right too much credit. OTOH, I wonder if maybe his kind of presentation has a better chance of actually getting through? Or maybe it IS true that “some men, you just can’t reach” (although I mean this quite differently than the original speaker.)
My son lives an apartment right at one of the exits where the semi went rogue in Minneapolis. After everyone fled the freeway he was out helping protesters with milk until he got gassed too. I’m glad he’s out for the forces of good but you can’t help but worry especially when dealing with the “invincibility” mindset of a 21 year old. I think it’s going to be a noisy night in his neighborhood.
“Beau of the Fifth Column” is an independent journalist named Justin King. He’s more than a bit of an anarchist rabble-rouser, but seems to be a good guy with solid takes and isn’t new on the scene if that’s your concern.
Uh, no, Adam. Even in non-normal times please rely on the forum’s moderation tools rather than publicly calling for people’s accounts to be shut down. No matter how crazy things get, that’s not how the forum is going to be moderated. :)
Now get back to keeping us all updated!

Do you know what he describes himself as, like how he identifies his type of politics?

His Philosophy
King is an outspoken critic of all authoritarian systems. He believes strongly in the decentralization of power and the inherent rights of people. A belief that educated and informed people are more difficult to subjugate drives his journalism and activism.

My throat hurts for her, but man did she take control. Good for her.
It’s almost like diversity in the police force is a goal every city should strive for.
