In fact a major reason for the higher level of poverty among the black population of the US was the decades-long practice of redlining in real estate (black people who had the money to buy property were basically barred from doing so in most parts of big cities), which in turn led to much less accumulation of wealth over generations for black people vs that of white people. That, combined with such a large proportion of black Americans being descendants of enslaved people who were only officially freed less than 200 years ago.
But yeah, even middle class and wealthy black people have to put up with ridiculous shit. We only hear about the more famous ones. Didn’t Henry Louis Gates get the cops called on him and in fact get arrested for trying to get into his own house when he lost his keys or something?

Yeah, that’s pretty gross, too. If the name on the resume is Leroy Washington it gets fewer interviews than the same exact resume with a “whiter” name. I’ve also heard stories of temp agency clients that make no secret about only wanting white people sent over for placements.

Yeah I’ve heard it’s especially bad in in that industry.
I get that people want to help the poor, want to address poverty. And in this country, being in the bottom percentage shouldn’t be as bad as it is for anyone. But… you can’t address one and expect the other to just fix itself. That’s just naive thinking, maliciously pushed or a sign that someone wants to avoid the uncomfortable. After all, if you try to address racial issues you have to look at these riots and really, really listen, and I imagine that’s hard.
A co-worker here is in the process of trying to become a reserve cop. Seeing some of his gripes made me think of ideas how to change things.

Police should have a minimum age of 25. This would give time to figure out if they’re white supremacists, and 25 is when folks get a bit more mature, which might help some.

The checks for poilce should be nationalized , with a priorirty for finding racial bias, and should be done to the standard of military top secret clearances. There should be less concern over if someone smoked pot 15 years ago, and more about the likelihood of them being a secret Nazi.
Every time someone is fired from a force, they have to go through the process again, though if they directed transfer or are laid off as part of a general RIF, they don’t.
As for Doug Jones, if he loses, I think he might make a good AG.
This is why I scratch my head when we (as a nation) send billions of dollars in aid overseas while ignoring poverty in our own country. Not that I’m against foreign aid, but we have so many people whoDon’t know where their next meal is coming from here.

The issues of racism and poverty are closely intertwined. There’s no way to say what caused what really. Not on a macro scale.
There’s also the issue of predatory capitalism that makes it impossible to truly solve any of those problems.

Well racism doesn’t only exist America. I mean… yeah.
And you don’t have be poor to experience racism. Hell you can be rich, driving around in a fancy car that you own and still be in danger for, you know, driving in a car some cop doesn’t think you should have for no other reason than racism. That’s not a problem due to poverty. There are a number of minorities in the middle and upper-class who still deal with shit on a daily basis. It doesn’t just stop because you have money and live in a nice neighborhood.
