I left when my older sister posted a meme about people on their farms being real America and more patriotic than people in the cities or on the coasts. It royally pissed me off, because what the fuck have her or my brother in law ever done for this country, ever. The only this country has ever asked of them is to pay their taxes, or maybe higher insurance premiums, and you can bet your ass they cry about it all the time. I certainly don’t remember them enlisting or doing anything else. I’m the only one out of 9 siblings that ever felt that calling. So I got off there because I reached my breaking point with their shit.

Every time I open a tweet in this thread there are significant numbers of white supremacists, neonazis and other Trump supporters (and bots) defending police, GOP politicians and Trump. Yeah, in 2019 a total of 48 police officers were killed by another person (not in accidents). Of those deaths:

34 were slain with handguns
7 with rifles
1 with a shotgun
2 with firearms in which the types of firearms were unknown or not reported
4 by a vehicle

It isn’t the heavy guns, really. The idea that it is a war zone out there and that cops need military gear comes from movies and TV. There isn’t any reality to it. Maybe police forces need a small tactical SWAT team for the rare events — or a regional, shared one they can call on — but militarizing the entire force is unnecessary and clearly a big part of the problem.

On the other hand, cops shot and killed a thousand people last year.

That excludes non-shooting deaths (like George Floyd!) and probably understates the number since there is no national mandate to report the numbers and no national database of incidents.
