We had here peaceful protests against an infrastructure project 10 years ago. Cops went violent, sprayed protesters with pepper spray, water cannons. One protestor lost his eye. I suspect cops are awful in every country. However, they do what they are told to do. Protect property, protect the rich. Don’t forget, these cops are following orders from above.
That’s a good article which highlights well the idea that we really need to be rethinking what we want cops to do.

I support the hell out of organized labor but good lord, the issue with police union contracts really can’t be overstated here. In Louisville, apparently, neither the mayor nor the chief of police is actually empowered to unilaterally fire police officers no matter what they do, which is just crazy-pants. The mayor can fire the chief of police because that’s an appointed position, but anything else has to go through the union.
In a lot of cases, the elected officials simply aren’t empowered to do what they need to be able to do, which is ridiculous.
There was a whole thing about during the previous election about “the left can’t meme”, but I feel like between this kind of thing and some of the mass-reposts of similar content on Facebook, we may be testing that belief.
Potentially worrying from the Philly and Chicago videos: even against cops in full riot gear, protesters are starting to fight back full well knowing the consequences.
Sounds like defund the police will have to be the plan then.

This is a reasonable argument. If a thrown tear gas canister is a deadly weapon, then a fired tear gas canister must be a deadly weapon, and the police are using deadly weapons against protestors.
