That old man deserved it /s

I learned something today. Thread on labor history and race.

The arrogance is almost unbelievable. Time to send in the troops, as Tom Cotton would say.

Masks were required at the protest here in Carson, south of Los Angeles. Very peaceful, almost entirely black. We walked over a little bit late so maybe it was more diverse earlier but probably not. Still, great to see how peaceful it was. Sheriff officers were there to direct people where to go but there no big lines, no escalation into violence, etc.

US support for police has dropped across the board by over 10% in the last week.

I thought the Crazification Factor was supposed to just be 30%! Now we’re at 60. . .

I’m from Delaware County, PA and that doesn’t surprise me at all.

The “good apples” give the bad apples a rousing round of applause:

Saw this posted today in support of police. Not once does it mention or address the very legitimate reasons that people might hate or fear the police. Just more US vs THEM - almost whining about how the poor police aren’t respected.

Here is a fantastic video of Amber Ruffin, a black comedian / writer, who recounts 4 times (out of many, many more) where she had run-ins with police.

I was moved.

[Copying this over from the Coronavirus thread, as it makes more sense here. Replying to Strollen’s posts statistically comparing the number of deaths from Coronavirus (and potentially additional deaths from protests) vs. number of blacks killed by police.]

@Strollen you can’t talk about this as just strictly a “number of deaths” issue. There’s also the whole issue of living one’s life knowing that you can get pulled over and shot. Knowing that you can be mistreated at any time because of the color of your skin.

I’m not black, but I am a member of a minority group, and it’s a day-to-day grind knowing that I am not treated as a full-fledged member of society. Knowing that at any moment someone can call me names or put me down. Wondering when it comes to day-to-day interactions or getting passed over for promotion if it’s a lacking in my skills or if it’s the color of my skin.

I feel it all the time. You can go days without having any issues and then suddenly it snaps back into focus. Either someone says something racist to you, you see something racist on TV, you read about how someone in your minority group was mistreated in the news. It all adds up.

@Strollen. Rutgers university estimates that a black man has a 1 in 1000 chance of being killed by the police.

In addition as I pointed out in my post above there are a lot of depression issues associated with living under this type of environment

I don’t think Strollen would mind being called a more “classical conservative”, but in general conservatives think much more linearly and become concerned with inconsistency.

The Covid-19 event quickly became split along partisan lines, with liberals generally on the side of making Covid restrictions much harsher, because they felt it was both more responsible and more scientific. Whether or not conservatives agree, at least it’s a point of view they understand.

Now all of a sudden here’s a bunch of worldwide protests by all sorts of people, and now suddenly liberals don’t care about Covid. So, which is? They say. Is it really a big deal, or is it not a big deal? If we were willing to shut down the world 2 weeks ago, shouldb’t we still be willing to shut the world down?

And if you get to decide what is too far and what is not far enough, why don’t I get to decide the same? What if it’s gun rights or abortion rights or anti-tax bills? Why aren’t my concerns as important? Etc.

[Just to be clear, I’m not saying this is what Strollen or I think, but a hypothetical conservative who doesn’t “get” why all of a sudden liberals don’t care about Covid.]

It’s a false narrative because it presupposes that people don’t care about Covid.

The fact is that people are willing to protest in spite of the risks because they feel that strongly about the cause. They are willing to protest in spite of the fact that they may be beaten, tear gassed, arrested, shot in the face with rubber bullets, etc.

They don’t believe that they will be as safe protesting as not protesting. That is part of why it is so powerful a message.

Right, but all that is saying is “my issues are more important than your issues.”

Not saying that that isn’t true, because it is true, but if your a conservative who still doesn’t get BLM, still doesn’t the protests, and doesn’t understand why they get decide what’s the most important issue of the hour, that’s what they’re goign

Maybe the reason that there’s worldwide protests joining in is because this is a bigger issue than people having to wait a couple months to get their haircut.

One of the things I think distorts people’s views is because they can find an echo chamber they assume that their issues are a huge deal and it can be hard to admit it when you see something that millions of people will protest for instead of hundreds.

Yes…
