The wrong difference, and it’s not appreciated.
It is not just the state or vigilantes who decided that murdering black people was okay. Entire systems in this country, and others, are designed to devalue brown and black lives, basically saying black lives don’t matter. The cops didn’t get the way they are today… on their own. And it took a global pandemic and three, three murders close to each other to get to this point.
It’s not as if we didn’t have examples of other murders to draw from. BLM didn’t start… yesterday.

I totally agree. I had written it differently at first, but then decided it was better to use the same language as in the linked source data.

That’s probably the most complete summary of the police problem in 33 minutes that I’ve every seen.
EDIT: John Oliver is amazing and I see @Telefrog just reposted it.
WOW.
That’s a Republican incumbent in what should be a pretty safe seat (Texas), who clearly has put a finger up into the wind and sensed which way it is blowing.

Well I hope he is genuine about this because while there are lots of things that need to be addressed, there are a few things the BLM and the reactions to the protest should be able to address… right now, not with years of research or long winded comparisons but right now with the help of those who have that knowledge and power and will to do it.
Culturally, America is more violent than other countries. I remember years ago Ted Koppel did several shows comparing Seattle and Vancouver, they were (and I believe still are) quite similar in terms of size, demographics, income, poverty rates, and even weather.
Not surprisingly, Seattle had ton more gun homicides, but it also has it had more murders with baseball bats, kitchen knives, and strangulation, than Vancouver. There were also a lot more assaults in Seattle.
IDK, maybe it has something to do with the Wild West murder statistic I posted the other day. We got our start in a violent revolution, England got rid of it is slaves after parliamentary debate it took a bloody civil war for us to do the same. We prioritize individual freedoms above what’s good for society, look at our pop culture heroes.
The US isn’t as bad as Afghanistan as far as violent culture, but I suspect we are closer to them than we are to Canada, Iceland, New Zealand etc.
Interestingly when I looked at police per capita the US was pretty average (The table doesn’t include all LEO in a country) more than Canada of course, the same as Netherlands and less than France.
Eh, it’s important not to fixate too much on historical roots when much more peaceful countries also have bloody pasts. Homicide rates in medieval Europe were as high or higher than the wild west. Iceland was at one point literally the wild west, founded by people literally synonymous with looting and killing - the Vikings. The Icelandic sagas make The Sopranos sound dull and peaceful.
Eventually Iceland and Europe got their shit together. We haven’t.
I hope I get to hear this General speak soon.

This seems pretty on point:
Is there any problem he can’t solve??
I’m … really jealous of his use of hand written fonts. Also, great points!
How is it that sometimes he DOESN’T sound like Gilbert Gottfried?
Interesting comments from the “co-founder” of the Black Lives Matter movement.
So our demands are also reflective of the fact that when we started Black Lives Matter, it wasn’t solely about police brutality and extrajudicial killing. That was a spark point, but it was very intentional for us to talk about the way that black lives are cut short all across the board. You can talk about the quality of our life in terms of housing and education and health-care systems and the pandemic and what we are seeing there. So for us it has been more comprehensive than just the criminal-justice system and policing. It’s bigger than that.
Taken from here.

Still looking for that horse aren’t you, the one think that will solve racism if you solve poverty. It’s not there either, although I can see how you think some statements can be twisted to meet your claim.
Yeah, the John Oliver episode is a must watch.
No Nesrie. I never stated that solving poverty would solve racism. I maintained it would save more black lives from violence than going after cops, and that without addressing one, you couldn’t fully address the other.
This was an unpopular option that was twisted to me being an “All Lives Matter” proponent. It was also stated that poverty in black community didn’t belong in this thread. It was just about cop reform. The Black Lives Matter website seemed to support that, which I admitted freely. Now one of the founders seems to disagree. shrugs
I know what I believe and would like to put most of my efforts to, mostly because of the person close to me who was shot and killed. I’m sorry if that offends you. I really don’t want to stir the pot more, so I’ll lurk away, although feeling somewhat better about all my posts given what the founder stated above.

Overall discussions about inequality in the world and the US place in the list of countries… yeah, that’s well outside the scope, takes away the very personal issues that have names, that bleed and turns it into a chart comparison and conversations that strip away the experience of being black or brown in the US and other countries.
If you actually posted something other than hey look at the poor, look at poverty over and over again… the BLM members have been working on this movements for years, several years. They have written articles, provided interviews, been part of not one or two but dozens if not more marches, and you narrowed in on the one paragraph that you keep pushing.
I am not offended. I am annoyed. Because no matter what I say, no matter how I push it, I still believe you think that if suddenly every black man, woman or child had money, was even rich that somehow this would not be a problem. That’s not true. We get treated like shit in the nice neighborhoods too. Hell an earlier article above even gave a real life, with a name, with a location experience of a little girl being questioned for using a pool.
I bet we could spend days just posting articles and listening to people who instead of experiencing the joys of just enjoying a body of water for a hot day, were treated like garbage instead. And those are not all in poor neighborhoods, and the specific example, with a name attached to it, was one of those.
K-pop fans, you know what to do.
One Florida police organization has said it will re-hire those very officers accused of misconduct, and that offer is prompting outrage.
On Saturday, the Brevard County chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police posted a message on Facebook addressed to the “Buffalo 57” and “Atlanta 6,” saying that it was “hiring.”
This is why police forces need to be dissolved and remade.
