The Democrats are terrified of being portrayed as soft on crime. Remember the Willie Horton ad used against Dukakis?
Of course. Dirty/ borderline dirty cops are a not insignificant part of his base.
Seems like that is a question for the legislature or the SC.
Technically, they are only less lethal than bullets, but they are actually more lethal than a down pillow wielded by a ten year old at a slumber party.
John Oliver and his team are hands-down the best Late Night host on TV right now, and that episode is amazing. The final segment interview with that lady… wow.
I can kind of understand why people might have a knee-jerk reaction to some of the demands of the protesters, but quite seriously - at some point, the arguments just aren’t in good faith. If someone can read and look at what the US Police has become, and not think that the entire thing needs to be reformed from top to bottom - then it’s because they really don’t care, or - more likely - support what the Police force is. Either attitude speaks volumes about that person.
I really have no idea why you would think that. I’ve tried to be as clear in my posts as possible.
Perhaps this is the reason. Doesn’t instill a lot of confidence that you are reading closely.
You know you don’t have to be so prickly. It’s a hard enough topic as it is. Lord knows there should be more discussion about race in this country, not less. Soon as people get behind their battle lines assumption begins and communication ends.
So that there is no doubt, I recognize that racism isn’t just about murder or economics. It is pervasive against all classes and all ages and is rooted in our past. It is an evil that needs to be flushed out and destroyed completely. It has fucked you up and it has fucked me up.
It feels silly that I would even have to state that. Talk about optics fail.

The officers strategically deflated the tires to “stop behaviors such as vehicles driving dangerously and at high speeds in and around protesters and law enforcement,” said Minnesota Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bruce Gordon. The troopers reportedly targeted cars that “contained items used to cause harm during violent protests” such as rocks and concrete. The Anoka County Sheriff’s Lt. Andy Knotz said deputies were following directions from the state-led Multiagency Command Center.
This is such bullshit. I guess property destruction is not surprising if they feel entitled to murder people.

Reading closely? I have been part of this discussion, this awareness… this effort of BLM for years. I have been literally, not kind of, posting in this very topic for years. Not just when people are marching, not just when the nation has a spotlight on a specific case and not just when millions of people are home because of a global pandemic and now have more free time than usual and nationwide and international protests pushed more people towards it.
This is not a one-off, moment of time, that I’ll get bored and walk away thing for me.
So don’t come here and try and redefine, re-explain or lecture me on the the movement that you picked up a few weeks ago. I mean seriously. Go back to 2016 and see where this discussion started here, how it all began and what we were talking about to see where the focus has been. BLM does not have a national presence, it’s local, grass roots, area specific and our area here has had a focus, a clear one.
I mentored a black girl for a few years, taught her a trade and helped pull her out of a bad situation. Poverty basically. She was doing awesome and I loved her. She was shot and killed. It wasn’t a cop this time, but a black man. I wish the cops would have been there to stop him.
This is literally bringing up black on black crime in a BLM discussion. You should know how that is going to look because it’s been mentioned, for years, why this is not okay, for these discussions. And bringing in a specific example instead of just asking what about… doesn’t make it better.
So to be clear, since you were so concerned earlier… NOW I am offended.

John Oliver is who should have taken over the daily show.
No offense to Trevor Noah, the guy is funny too. But Oliver actually matches what Stewart used to be able to pull off.

Comedy Central: Hey John - would you like to do your show every night?
John: Hell yeah, I love this gig!
HBO: Hey John - how about just doing it once a week?
John: Uh…I like that a lot better.

There are virtues to both. Daily has a certain rhythm and routine, and can convey a consistency.
The weekly format enables a deep dive into subjects that simply isn’t feasible on a nightly program. Both have merits, and I am glad Oliver has his niche.

One of the things bugging me about reporting on this is that a lot of people are using Twitch to live stream shit.
One problem with that. Twitch ToS doesn’t allow violence. So when the fucking police shoot some innocent dude with a impact munition, now the streamer has violated ToS and can lose their channel and have their VOD (which is evidence imo) deleted.
They say “oh we’re all for BLM” but if you contact them about their ToS basically covering for police brutality they pretend nothing is happening.

You know what @Nesrie, I’m probably spitting in the wind here, but I have the distinct impression that @Anklebiter doesn’t realize that you are in fact black. That could explain a lot of his replies.

That would just… shock me. I mean really would.
I’ve been posting in this topic for almost 4 years now, and yes education. asthma, just not cop things, some poverty, some neighborhood… like lots of stuff. Names, faces of people that we lost. This black life matters, this black life matters, this is wrong, this is hard to watch, this is so sad…
And what the last few months activity picked up but often does when we have a national case that involves our police in some fashion, or something recorded. It’s when others show up here the most… except this is different. You can see different. It’s like 2k posts in the last few months.
But there is just something wrong with someone showing and trying school me on poverty and education and experiences as I haven’t been here and discussing this for literally years. Just kind of trucking along like people do because as Fred says, we don’t stop just because someone says it’s not working, or because they think it’s too hard, or maybe the messaging is wrong or everyone else got bored and moved onto the next thing.
I mean I literally talked about asthma and the reason it is so, so much worse in the poor neighborhoods so for someone to kind suggest that I don’t…
Here’s what I know, we have names and faces on fences and signs and in articles and the police beating shit out of protesters right now. Many of the BLM marches, the protests… they have names associated with them for a reason. And we’re running out of space on the big signs because there too names and faces coming from just the last handful of years. … it’d be really great if we could stop adding to those signs.
