Leave Spider-Man out of this!

Aunt Jemima has had it coming for a while now.

It’s easier to spin Ben if they want to though, since his origin isn’t literally slavery.

If they chuck the servitude thing they could maybe make it work.

But honestly, I don’t care about brands much at the end of the day.
Especially racist or vaguely racist ones.

Since 1946, Uncle Ben’s products have carried the image of an elderly African-American man dressed in a bow tie, said to have been a Chicago maître d’hôtel named Frank Brown.[11][12] According to Mars, Uncle Ben was an African-American rice grower known for the quality of his rice. Gordon L. Harwell, an entrepreneur who had supplied rice to the armed forces in World War II, chose the name Uncle Ben’s as a means to expand his marketing efforts to the general public.[13] “Uncle” was a common appellation used in the Southern United States to refer to older male black slaves or servants.[12]

I mean, I agree with her that she should definitely have a criminal record, and probably badly needed some counseling too. And yes, obviously any minority individual that did any of that shit would have been shot dead or at a minimum thrown in jail.

But the coy little tone of “what white person hasn’t shop lifted thousands of dollars in merchandise and run from the police?” is just… what the fuck?

Whatever one things of “Defund the Police” as a slogan there’s no denying it has sparked a real conversation. I went about my new junkie rounds this morning somewhat cynically expecting to see BLM related stories losing front page space as coronavirus takes center stage again, only to find this as the main story on CNN. An exploration of different defund the police scenarios.

I fully expect this post to be met with rage, but oh well.

Here’s the thing… the minority view of all this stuff? It’s still just part of the whole picture.

This seems to often be lost in the current conversation. And I understand why. It’s because for a long time, that view was largely ignored.

But the thing is, society is not made up entirely of the minority. That’s why they’re the minority. Their view is not magically correct. It is merely another perspective which should be considered within the whole.

If you want to make progress, then guess what? The opinion of white people ACTUALLY MATTERS A LOT. You can’t just ignore that perspective. You can’t say, “Well, your perspective was the only perspective for a long time, so now we’re going to balance stuff out by ignoring it entirely.” It just won’t work, because you need the support from the majority to get stuff done.

Also, there’s the simple logical fact that communication is a two way street. Progress comes from everyone better understanding the experiences of everyone else. Just like it’s hard for a white person to understand the life experience of a black person, the same goes the other way around. Now, the black person may have the advantage in understanding based on the fact that the white perspective is perhaps more reflected in society overall, but it’s still naive to assume that a minority actually understands the life experience of a white person. It’s different.

The idea of “you should just accept that what I’m saying is correct” isn’t rational. If we want to move forward, we both have to communicate and understand each other. Peoples’ individual perceptions are different, and almost universally, incomplete.

Or meet physical fitness requirements.

I mean just change uncle Ben’s to chef Ben’s or Farmer Ben’s.

If it is truly based on a real person.

It’s based on some random dude near as I can tell. A dude named Frank.

I think we could all get behind a Frank Reynolds rebrand.

So much WTF here.

During a recorded conversation about race in America on Sunday, Passion City Church Pastor Louie Giglio said that the phrase “white privilege” sometimes ignited backlash and suggested that the words be altered to “white blessing.” He also noted that white people understand that slavery was a curse, but added that "we miss the blessing of slavery, that it actually built up the framework for the world that white people live in.”

Okay, sure, you’re thinking that’s pretty WTF. But I’m not sure which is worse, the statements or that someone decided that to heal the nation they needed to have this particular round table discussion.

The comments were made during a discussion with Christian rapper Lecrae and Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy amid a national reckoning over the police killing of George Floyd and racial injustice.

WTF is thrown around a lot but that elicited a literal WTF from me.

As a connoisseur I try to bring only the finest WTF to this forum.

With great racism, comes great responsibility.

It does make you wonder how long the Redskins, Indians, Braves, and Chiefs can hold out. Perhaps a whole stadium doing the tomahawk chop will feel a bit different now.

What an amazing tshirt, haha.

And then the 49ers came along and stole their hypocritical thunder.

I think the best response to your post is this:

TRIGGERED!

I mean, was Aunt Jemima under a lot of pressure from “leftists” to even change the name? Or did they decide they didn’t want the brand anymore on their own? I just don’t feel like maple syrup branding is at the top of anyone’s give a shit list in 2020.
