I still think defund the police is useful, as it’s a slogan folks like Biden can claim to oppose to sound moderate, while doing what the defunders want.

Just now protesters took down the statue of Confederate General Pike in DC, the only Confederate monument in DC.

Earlier in the evening protesters took down 2 Confederate statues in Raleigh NC:

(Looks up the Pike statue.) Oh that statue. I never realized he was either a Confederate or a general when I lived in that neck of the woods. (I assumed he was something like the inventor of the screw propeller.) Apparently everyone in DC has wanted the Pike statue gone for a while now.

I’m so happy these confederate statues are being taken down.

I’m in CA SLO right now and just after the surfing report on the alternative station they mentioned today should be a national holiday for end of slavery. All onboard with that one.

What do you all think? National holiday today? Woohooo!!!

Unlawful assembly called in Portland. Must be a day that end’s in a “Y” again.

Great thread on the actually dangerous jobs in America. Policing doesn’t make the top ten.

That list isn’t helpful. The Americans solution will be to have loggers fell trees with APC-mounted grenade launchers.

“We must dominate that low life thug, The Lorax.”

Of particular note: nobody employed in jobs more dangerous than being a cop is covered by qualified immunity, and none of them are allowed to murder someone because they felt scared.

Amazing thread by a guy who wrote an amazing book (Boom Town) about Oklahoma.

5 years old, but still relevant.

Totally not-racist jail superintendent segregates prison workers. Thank goodness this white guy was there to save black employees from “acute racialized trauma.”

In written statements, all eight staffers recount a meeting with Lydon where he admitted to banning officers of color from the fifth floor but denied being racist. He defended that decision, charges say, yet reversed the order within 45 minutes.

A union steward complained to top brass, prompting the internal investigation. During his interview, Lydon explained that he recognized Floyd’s death would “likely create acute racialized trauma” for minority staff and felt he had a duty to protect them from Chauvin. Lydon claimed the decision was not related to his workers’ professionalism or concerns over Chauvin’s safety.

There is no way there aren’t cameras covering every possible angle for every door leading into the garages there. Those teams put millions of dollars of hardware in there. They’ll find the culprit quickly.

I think so, too. NASCAR seems serious about it, too.

This was exactly my thought – there has to be surveillance cameras on every inch of that space.

Remember, it’s just “a few bad apples.”
