Confirmed. There is no cross-compatibility between Legendary Edition and the older ones.
There is currently a lot of Blood Bowl activity on Qt3. Now is a great time to get the new version and join the active community for some good old-fashioned head-bashing.
Oh yeah, and the brand-new ability to create open leagues among friends is the best thing ever to hit the game! There’s already a fun Qt3 Open League.
Before I upgraded to LE, there were patches to Dark Elves E that seemed to bring mechanics, interface, etc. in line with LE. LE is worth it for the extra races, but mostly for the fact that it’s what people are playing.
Since there are races in the tabletop game that aren’t in LE, I anticipate an expansion for it, too…

Thanks for the info. I’m still on the fence though on buying the game despite the great sale. The Securom DRM is making me hesitate. How many activations do I get and is it really cumbersome?
I think you get five activations, and it’s annoying if you get rid of the email that gives you the order number. The captcha’s on the page are difficult to read, but can be reloaded until they are visible.

The Blood Bowl installation is a bit annoying as it requires two serial codes (game & player) instead of one as is usual. Other than that I’ve never had any Securom issues with any versions of Blood Bowl and I’ve played them all as soon as they were released, starting in June 2009. The first game I bought online from Nexway and the new one on DVD from play.com.
The single player campaign is very different in the Limited Edition. You’re first given ready-made teams to coach and specific goals for each match. You need to complete three passes in the same half, for example. Apparently they are meant to familiarize you with the different tactics: blocking, fouling, running and passing plays etc. Winning is not necessary at first. Eventually you’re free to coach your own team and I think the campaign then becomes more like in the earlier versions. Some people have found the new campaign more fun than the earlier ones.

Just finally picked this game up after eying it for years. So far it doesn’t seem as complicated as I feared. I played an exibition to a tie my first game, probably made too many bad decicisions with my necromantic team and once was going to score but ran out of turns literally 1 step away from the goal.
If I decide to join in the online fun - do you guys play classic or the enhanced rules? I’m going to fo through the campaign and figure out which team I want, I’m leaning towards undead as I like the theme and they seem fairly straightforward and balanced.
Edit: oh - and does anyone know a nice printable summary of the roll tables? I found a copy of the rulebook.

Classic rules all the way. Nobody publicly confesses to playing the Blitz (enhanced) multiplayer, at the least :-)

All the leagues I know of and certainly the Qt3 leagues use the classic rules. In a pick-up match you can of course use any rules you agree on with your opponent.
The popularity of the classic rules is due to the board game legacy and also due to them being pretty perfect as is. The Blitz rules add a lot of mostly useless money drains and make the game even more random (and buggy). Mostly you wouldn’t even want to pick any of the new optional things when managing your team. The smaller granularity of the inducements in Blitz could be useful sometimes, though.
I played the original single player campaign with Blitz until I won all trophies and I ended up regretting my rule set choice. Too late to change after a few tournaments.

Thanks for all the info. Bought the game based on the recommendations here, and already started my download. Looks like Impulse is a bit slow tonight, so I look forward to waking up tomorrow and try out my new game.
My advice: pretend that Blitz mode doesn’t even exist. Classic is much, much better.

I know there’s a “LRB5 Ickle Book” on the net. I haven’t checked if there’s any outdated info in that as it’s based on the previous version of the rules. The LRB6 (Competition Rules) can be found also in your Blood Bowl game folder, it’s included with the game. It intentionally supplements the game manual which has incomplete rules.

The competition rules can actually be found in-game if you go to the Tutorial menu. Handy if I just want to look up the list of Star Players or look over all the team rosters.
I forgot to add when I posted the deal: use code SURVEY2010 to receive a 10% discount (expires 2/11/11).

Thanks chaps, will bear that in mind.
This could be cool - I’ll join the steam group and we’ll see how we go.
It’s a bit hard to teach BB in-game (I find even the 4-minute time limit a bit on the short side), but I’ve done it before, and I will usually be happy to provide instruction/sparring if I am online. Just ping me through steam.
I find it hard while typing (especially with the annoying dice roll chat interrupt thing) but not so difficult if you skype alongside the game. If you want to play a game to learn you can just come by the qt3 BB page and put out a challenge in chat, as I think you’ll have a better shot than simply lingering in the awkwardly UIed league rooms.

Many Blood Bowl players have mistakenly let a player die even though the apothecary would have saved them. The UI is partly to blame. Here are some large (1600x1000) screenshots illustrating the issue. Studying these pictures is recommended if you wish to avoid the error when you play.
A player dies. You have the apothecary on hand. This dialog pops up. Click “Yes” to try healing the player. Quickly now, the clock is running! You have 30 seconds to complete the procedure. It’s a surprisingly short time in the heat of the moment.
Yay, it worked! A second dialog pops up. Notice the original, unhealed result is selected by default.
Click the new, lower result to select it. Notice the new result is now marked with a blue ball and the text is coloured blue. You have to click the red circle on the left or the text next to it to select the new result. Clicking somewhere else in the lower dialog area does not select the new result.
Wait! You’re not done yet! You also have to click the “OK” button on the bottom of the dialog to heal the player! If you do not click it before the timer runs out the player will not be healed. Not even if you did select the new result!
If you selected the new result and clicked “OK”, this is the happy result. Notice the important line “The Apothecary heals #13 Blotty Puffball” in the game log at the lower left corner. If this line is missing you did not heal the player. You were another victim of this UI error.
This is what the log looks like if you did not succeed in selecting the new result and clicking “OK” in time. There is no “The Apothecary heals” line. The player is dead even though the apothecary succeeded in treating him. Don’t be like me. Don’t let this happen to you. Thank you!
It’s a horrible interface. Inexcusable, really.
It’s basically Vista’s UAC as a game interface. Yeah - pretty inexcusable (Vista at least has the excuse that it doesn’t want you to screw up your PC).

Keep in mind this interface is actually an improvement over the first Blood Bowl game Cyanide put out. Yes, hard to believe.
