S.C. To Remove Confederate Flag From Capitol Grounds

The Confederate battle flag that has flown in a prominent spot at South Carolina’s Statehouse for more than 50 years is close to being furled and put in a museum, after the state’s House of Representatives backed a bill early this morning that would put the flag in a relic room.

After more than 12 hours of debate, the final vote was 94-20.

Gov. Nikki Haley, who is expected to sign the measure into law today, called it “a new day in South Carolina.”

Edit: Weird double post. Sorry!

Great news. Symbols matter. It’s a small thing compared to, say, police violence against black Americans, but removing the flag from the state’s most important official building should help change attitudes.

Odd question that maybe nobody knows the answer to: the article says the flag has been flying there for 50+ years. The thing is, the building was constricted in 1855. Had there been another Confederate flag that flew there since the Civil War, or was it just (re)introduced this past century?

I brought this up a few pages back.
It was introduced this past century, laughably in response to federal anti-segregation laws.

That’s why the argument that it’s not about racism is kind of ridiculous.

Yup. The Confederate battle flag was specifically brought back and flown in the 50’s in response to anti-segregation.

Thanks, guys - I missed that part of the conversation. And damn, that’s awful.

It’s not awful, it’s heritage!

It is of course awful heritage, which is something we desperately want to believe cannot happen. The natural human urge is to say, “We must never forget our history! … We just need to fix it a little, spruce it up, make it nice and pretty …”

This. All of this.

So the interior approps bill got pulled over the flag. Essentially, a voice amendment went through that would have banned any use of the battle flag. That meant that laying the flag Confederate graves is illegal even on days of remembrance by private individuals.

At rate thiis is will be a bill to exhume and hang Confederate bodies this fall.

That bill would die a flaming death in any courthouse.
