Can you get it from EA’s store for $15.00?
That’s a more appropriate price, but I wonder if the version would have compatibility issues. Anyone give that combo a try?

I used the EA downloader version of Awakenings with the Impulse version of Dragon Age without any problems.
Sounds like a winner, then - thanks for the confirmation. Seems a little odd the price hasn’t dropped on a permanent basis elsewhere, but I’ve learned to not expect sanity when it comes to game pricing.

This has completely and utterly trained me to skip DA2 on release and come back 12 months later for the ultimate “with all the DLC” edition.
What it really should have done is trained you to not care about the DLC at all.
Argh, I can’t believe I let myself get bit by not having saved in a long time. I finished off the Warden’s Keep area, left back to my camp, did all of my usual inventory fiddling and junk selling, talked to party members, etc., and then thought I’d head back to the Keep and check out the aftermath. Except that instead of instantly taking me there as I expected, it sends me wandering off to the west on the world map a bit, I get into a fight with mercenaries, and then due to some confusion about line of sight and pathfinding, the party gets slaughtered.
I’m normally a quicksave whore, but I hadn’t saved recently since it all seemed perfectly safe, as all of my other trips between the Keep and camp had been instant, but I guess it changes once you finish it, and my last save is now over an hour back. Not even an auto-save after finishing it.

World map events have a random chance of occurring.

Yay, my parents descended to the basement and presented me with the ultimate edition for my 40th birthday.
I’m right now going to start the joining rituals. So I have a couple of questions:
Is this like ME where I have some party members available and need to pick a few for each mission? I play as a warrior. Anyone in particular I should avoid / always take on.
Is dual wielding a viable option. I like having a dude wielding 2 weapons (even though Kendo thought me that using 1 sword efficiently is trouble enough). Any do’s and don’t regarding party member leveling. I’m not looking to min/max - just don’t want to get stuck somewhere.

Yes. It’s been like that in every Bio game for the last 7 years, in fact.

It definitely helps to always have a mage. Also make sure to have plenty of healing and mana potions. Check the wiki for more info.

Yes. IIRC a dual-wielding warrior is the best DPS machine in the game.
Wynne is probably the best support character in the game. Her healing specialization makes things quite a bit easier, and convenient.

I played with a rogue specializing in double wielding and archery. Worked like a charm. And I never min/max, I just built my character on a whim. However I did not play on the hardest difficulty, I understand that things get pretty hairy in a few places on the hardest difficulties.
For party members I mostly used a tank, a mage and myself starting out, but I switched out the tank for a healer in the endgame.

Anyone knows how to get this game to recognize a Microsoft mouse wheel? Zooming with the keyboard is annoying.
If you want to use a character for MMO-type tanking with taunt and threaten, sword-and-board is much easier to keep alive in addition to having a reasonable number of stuns and a shattering move.
Do you use the Intellipoint software with your mouse? There’s been a long time glitch in DA:O that makes it not work well with Intellipoint and the mouse wheel. It still works, but sometimes you really have to roll that wheel a lot to get it to take, while other times it works fine. Not sure if there’s ever been an unofficial fix or workaround other than perhaps disabling the Intellipoint software. As far as I’m aware, the cause is due to a fix to the mouse software a long while ago and developers never changed their programming to match. I remember Steam having this glitch when trying to scroll in the Store page; it’d either be jumpy or not scroll at all until a Steam fix corrected the problem. Same thing for DA:O, I expect.

There’s nothing stopping you having TWO warriors in the party…

I’ve never had any problems with my Microsoft mouse wheel working with DAO. I’m using an old driver (four+ years) under Vista32, though.

Its not the only game I have issue with. L4D2 does not recognize the wheel button if I recall correctly, let alone the other 2 buttons on the side. I might just buy another mouse in this case.

The DA2 thread inspired me to play through the original again with some mods and I came across this loot itemization and balance mod:
This mod for Dragon Age: Origins changes the itemization of the game. It adds about 600 new balanced items and a fully configurable loot system to the game. All the new items were created and balanced for the difficult default settings that you can select during the setup process. All settings are optional and can be configured, enabled or disabled by running the setup wizard at any time.
The new items are sold by various vendors in the world, but they can also be acquired by looting dead enemies or containers. Whenever you enter an area for the first time, the new loot system randomly places the new magic items and other goodies in all kinds of lootable objects. You can even edit the percent chances to see these items drop directly. You can tweak the loot system to your liking by setting over 30 different settings. With all the new loot, you will constantly be improving your equipment over the course of the game.
The mod also allows you to enable some balance changes that increase the difficulty of the game and a few misc things like a modified Auto Loot which is compatible to this mod are included as well. As of version 1.0.11, the mod allows you to spice up the fight against the Archdemon. If this option is enabled, the mod will add 4 new scripted abilities to the Archdemon’s arsenal of spells. More boss fights will be enhanced in the upcoming releases.
The setup also lets you remove/downgrade the overpowered DLC armors that throw a wrench into game difficulty settings. I also love that you can ramp up the difficulty if you like, and I think I’ll try that with a full party after this duo rogue playthrough inevitably crashes and burns…
Oh, and best of all: it lets you skip the Fade sequence.
Just wanted to say I’m enjoying Witch Hunt if only because it’s just such a fan service extravaganza. All sorts of revisiting old haunts or offhand mentions, in some cases very important references, to characters and events in DA:O and DA:A. Probably the others (Golems and Leliana DLC) too but I haven’t played them yet.
My favorite fan service reference wasn’t even to Dragon Age. Anyone else notice what Finn’s staff is named?
