The Crunchyroll Thread

Oh god I can’t stop watching Coffee Prince (apparently on Hulu as well).

I like sports animes when the protagonists aren’t complete assholes (sup Major), so I’m watching Kuroko’s Basketball. I also like… that show about the space pirates. You know, Mōretsu Pirates?

crunchyroll will have a ps3 app, most likely in the fall (crunchyroll says summer but the psn blog says fall).

Gintama -saw one ep, kind of funny

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya -saw a couple eps, not bad

Ramen Fighter Miki -comedy about a badass fighting delivery girl has rivalry with another store girl. watched all 12 eps. really liked it!

Un-Go -detective solves cases. not bad, like the post-war near future japan they have. the future tech seems reasonable, lots of fancy computer stuff, no flying cars. the one or two supernatural elements are a little weird.

Bodacious Space Pirates (not watched yet)

Total Eclipse -saw one ep. meh so far.

Kids on the Slope was really good for the first half. It peaks with first music festival episode and honestly you could probably stop watching it there.

Drama at Crunchyroll.

Reports are that about 17-20 people were laid off at Crunchyroll consisting of the core staff. The official news from parent company Ellation:
We recently closed an acquisition to significantly expand the size of our engineering team. As part of company restructuring efforts, it is with regret that we needed to make some difficult but necessary changes at Ellation. This morning, we parted ways with 17 employees that played important roles in helping us grow the company over the last several years.

This was not an easy decision, but one that puts Ellation on the path towards continued growth. While this announcement is unfortunate, it is not a reflection of Ellation’s overall business. It was a record-year for Crunchyroll in 2016 and VRV is off to a great start. We have some exciting plans for 2017 that we’ll be sharing soon.
Now, the unofficial take from an anonymous source:
There were layoffs. The entirety of QA and a decent % of the San Francisco engineering team were laid off.
Basically, we started working with an outsourcing company (Yopeso), whos CTO was buddy buddy with our head of Product. He became our interim CTO around June and has made horrible decision after horrible decision from a ground level perspective. Decided to get rid of the Project Management team, directly told engineers that he didn’t care if they had to work 16 hours on a weekend because they were on salary, etc.

Basically every engineer and ground level employee started asking about conflict of interest and directly asked executives if they were going to be replaced with outsourced engineers, and were repeatedly told we would not be.
Today, they purchased a portion of the outsourcing company. The CEO of that outsourcing company is now permanent CTO at Ellation (Crunchyroll’s parent).

They sent us a wonderful FAQ at the end of the day, this part in particular was embarrassingly bad.

Q: Doesn’t Simon have a conflict of interest as our CTO?
A: No. Simon’s involvement historically was at our request. We agreed to a budget against which we ramped up the Moldova team. Additionally, Simon was involved in our CTO search process, endorsing several candidates along the way. In the end, we decided that the combination of Simon and the Moldova acquisition was the best combination for Ellation. As we move forward, Simon is an employee of Ellation and his incentives are 100% aligned to delivering shareholder value to Ellation. We all as shareholders have the same interest in making Ellation a huge success.
Moldova sucks.

Sony’s Crunchyroll is adding games to the Mega Fan and higher tier.
