Christian group leader to Liberty University president:
This is a request to pray with you.

Liberty University:
Fuck off or go to jail.

(Wonder if the NYT will have a hand wringing op-ed on the suppression of prayer at Christian schools.)

The red letter Christians are Christians that even @ArmandoPenblade might like.

I don’t know this Shane guy, so I looked into his movement.

It is what Christianity should be more like, not the Fawells of the world.

If this was what Christianity really looked like, there would be fewer former Christians. It’s not, not usually, so here we and I am.

Republican Jesus would wash the feet of the money lenders after letting them into the temple.

So, for (modern white) Evangelicals, the qualifier isn’t faith but rather how caustically can you practice your religion? We knew that, of course, but that seems rather indefensible.

Yes. They are the opposite of Christians.

Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Slartibartfast’s best work, definitely.

If only Jesus had warned us about them. Oh wait.

That’s a fancy way of saying “Shut up, peasants!”

He’s pretty busy thinking about how the Obama administration abused its power. A man only has so much time.

This is basically the entire GOP platform on poverty and the economy:

What’s the main thing that separates the rich from the poor? Ask any of the financially free people, and they will tell you the same: their mindset.

This deceptive and disingenuous nonsense is rampant in the marketing materials aimed at gullible and desperate consumers…

They aren’t wanting it enough and that’s the only reason they don’t have it, folks.

The power of positive thinking is lowering your blood pressure, not fattening your wallet.

How many bajillion copies did The Secret sell?

Here I was thinking that headline was referring to the fact that poorer Republicans tend to vote as though they are millionaires facing a temporary setback, but yet it’s the opposite. They indeed ARE millionaires they just need to try harder. Go ahead and keep on voting Republican, you won’t be poor for long.

thoughts and prayers

I do think there is one caveat to this denunciation of the “winner” mindset: while it is not true that having a “winner” mindset will help you, having a defeatist mindset can screw you of opportunity.

To put it in terms of formal logic, having a non-defeatist mindset is not a sufficient condition for life success but it is a necessary condition. And, in addition to that necessary condition, there are other, concurrent, conditions including economic opportunity, lack of barriers to entry, and so forth that are also necessary for success. You have to meet all of the necessary conditions to do well.

Which means that rather than focusing narrowly on “moral hazard” or mindset, sound public policy would actually try to increase opportunity, and remove barriers to entry more generally, while also promoting a positive mindset, or at least not encouraging a defeatist mindset.

The point I was more trying to make is that that GOP tend to think that the problem poor people have is that they have a defeatist mindset and they only need to change that and pull themselves up by their bootstraps. They aren’t trying hard enough. It’s simply not true. Many poor people work harder and are far more generous than their wealthy peers.

It’s so true, and I always get a good laugh out of it, given the phrase’s meaning.
