The decline to moral bankruptcy of the GOP

Yeah, sorry. Wrong tweet.

Hof is dead.

Here’s Steve King endorsing a Nazi.

Fox asked Graham on Tuesday if he too would ask for $1 million if he “beat” Warren in a DNA test, and Graham responded, “No, I want a casino and a million bucks.”

Because why not make a dig at Native Americans while also going after Warren.

I like the term ‘Western Civilization.’ Can’t say I’m fond of it becoming code for ‘white supremacy’ or ‘fascism’ or whatever it’s supposed to telegraph to folks.

I think it’s too late. You never hear people say “Eastern Civilization”, both because the “east” isn’t a monoculture and because of… other reasons. “Western Civilization” also seems too general. The “west” isn’t a monoculture either. I think people are usually referring to the philosophical tradition of the Greeks and the political traditions of the Romans proceeding upward through history to the Enlightenment and the various Revolutions of the 18th century, while ignoring slavery, superstition, endless internecine warfare, and the various other atrocities that accompany European history. It might be better to just be more specific: “Aristotelian ethics” or “the scientific method” or “constitutional democracy” or whatever. I think it’s fine to compare Confucius to Socrates and even argue that one is more useful than the other, but throwing a wide net over “east” and “west” seems facile and lends itself to, well, less than salutary applications.

Well, nobody said ‘Western Civilization’ was all good! At least, I didn’t. But yes, of course it’s a colossal generalization.

At last count, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke was the subject of 14 separate government investigations. (A new record!) But that number could soon be zero. That’s because Zinke just fired the Department of the Interior’s acting inspector general.

HA HA.

I thought it was $80,000. I had to reread it several times before I realized it was $80.00.

Cents matter!

Was he actively fund raising?

I have a former friend, someone I hadn’t seen in years, who was complaining to me about political correctness because someone jumped down his throat for talking about Western Civilization. By the end of the day it was apparent to me that he’d become a virulent racist/borderline Nazi. I haven’t spoken to him since.

So it would be really racist and Nazi like to say something like…

“Back in the good old days it was Western Civilization that modernized the world together”.

I don’t think that anyone is saying that the phrase itself is racist. The issue is that racists use it all the time to the point where you have to have a sound context for using it to avoid coming across as a racist.

When my friend first made his comment, before I was aware of his racism, I took him at face value and assumed that the person he was talking to him was being over sensitive. By the end of the day it became apparent that the issue wasn’t the phrase itself but that his use of it was almost certainly in a racist context.

I don’t like being crowded out by asshats. I feel like they’ve tainted the phrase “Western Civilization”, but I don’t want to concede the point. Unfortunately I can’t think of any effective way to remove the taint.

If there were a good alternative that sums up “democracy, rule of law, scientific method, constitutional systems, etc.” (the good parts in other words, without the bad), then I’d use that.

I often find a useful tool when seeking a perfect description is to define its opposite.

Let us call your proposed bundle of concepts and systems, hmm. . . Anti-Republicanism!

I know this was a little tongue in cheek, but since a good deal of that “modernization” came in the form of a handful of white Christian powers setting sail across the world, enslaving, conquering, and slaughtering a few million brown people with less of a fixation on iron-derived alloys to obtain enormous material and territorial benefits that they used to enforce absolute global hegemony, often pushing their disadvantaged thralls into chaotic backslides that persist in the form of ongoing tribal and religious powderkegs to this very day, and merrily dragging us all into a couple of World Wars along the way, punctuating one with the introduction of weapons technology capable of eliminating life as we know it on a global scale in the blink of an eye. . .

. . . it might, at the very least, be a little bit rose-tinted to say it that way, I guess is what I’m saying :)

So the world pre-western civilization was peaceful and without religious strife? If I have learned anything from reading the book 1491 it is that new world natives were far from the peaceful naïve peoples that some like to pretend.

So goes the history of the world I guess. And thanks for realizing that was tongue in cheek. Others might have flamed me. :)

My current and present wokeness argues against my deeply set inner belief that if we just banned religion in the most war-torn regions of the world and banned the practice of horrific “traditions” like female genital mutilation and institutionalized sexism in general, they’d all be better off in a generation or six. . .

. . . but the first side likes to remind me that treating the arrival of the Great White Satan as a Goodly, Godly Civilizing Influence on the Inferior “Peoples” of the Worlde was rarely so clear-cut a benefit for them. Or, often, much of a benefit at all.
