The decline to moral bankruptcy of the GOP

This thread wasn’t really meant to be about Christie alone, but for the time being, what the hell.

Never seen Vladimir Harkonnen without his antigrav suspenders on.

Unreal.

The rules don’t apply to you if you’re in a position of power, don’t you know?

I’m sure this is some kind of ritualistic “laying on of hands” that will ensure future mission success, so he’s really doing God’s work here.

The plan to cut financial support for aging and disabled veterans included in President Donald Trump’s $1.1 trillion federal budget proposal has led to bitterness and confusion among the estimated 225,000 vets who could lose the payments.

The reductions may also trigger a political backlash against the president, who made reforming and increasing support for the Department of Veterans Affairs a major part of his campaign against Hillary Clinton.

“Make that guy in the White House keep his promise to all of us veterans, lest we all fall by the wayside and be left on the battlefield,” said a former Army staff sergeant who served in Vietnam.

“Please don’t do this to us,” said a sailor who served on ships in the Tonkin Gulf during the Vietnam War. “My wife and I already live our later years in constant uncertainty. We thought our VA benefits were fairly safe.”

“I have become aware that President Trump’s VA budget sets to screw Vietnam veterans first in line by eliminating the unemployability benefit for those of us who actually served and sacrificed who have reached the age of Social Security benefits,” said a former Navy lieutenant who flew the EP-3E version of the P-3 Orion surveillance aircraft in Vietnam.

“What can we do? Based on this, veterans would be in better shape if a Democrat had been elected,” said another vet. “I voted for Trump because of promises of helping the veterans, not taking away. I surely hope I don’t regret voting for him.”

Oh, golly, I sure hope you don’t regret voting for him either. I just wish there was some indication whatsoever during the election that Trump would break promises and screw over people. Gosh, this is just shocking.

I keep trying to dig deep and find a shred of sympathy for these vets. But they voted for him. So no.

I have sympathy for them, but it’s tempered by the fact that they’re idiots.

You helped me find that shred. You’re right. Even though they made a fucked up choice, they’re still human beings. Human beings that fought for a country that they believed in. And were in some way injured because of that. I find it too easy to slap a label on people that I don’t like and consider them less than human. It’s one of my many failings. In this case a modicum of sympathy is valid. If I can’t change my thought process then I might as well cash in my chips.

Your post almost made me feel bad for inwardly celebrating their potential plight. Almost. But any bad thing that happens to a Trump voter is deserved, so I managed :-)

To be fair, I do tend to be more lenient to stupid vets than most stupid people.

Well, they were lied to, and they believed the lies. Everyone is susceptible to believing lies they want to hear. Trump just happens to be particularly brazen and amoral about his lies, even for a politician.

So, I can feel sympathy for veterans who believed that he would improve their situations. He promised to do so, over and over. I don’t put them into the same category as those who supported Trump primarily out of shared fear of brown people and Muslims.

From a person with a long history of lies, broken contractual agreements, refusals to pay for services, etc.

Zero fucking sympathy.

Yup. When the breakdown of critical thinking skills is that severe, I blame the (non)thinker.

One of the few good things Trump has done was make it easier to fire folks at the VA. That’s like trimming your toenails while hacking you to bits.

That said, some of the most deplorable people I’ve ever run across were fellow vets, which is shocking to me since the folks I served with were awesome. What happened to them?

Rich, if it were still possible to do so, I’d give you a like. It’s vital to remember that each of these people is human and just as prone to error as any of the rest of us.

I know I’m a week late to the party, but I just had to say that I <3 this post so hard! You sir, get all of my likes, yugogirls, brofists, or whatever for the day!
