ESO was built by many of the DAoC team, and they claimed it as one of the major PvP influences. So that isn’t accidental.
I hate this thread and all the awesome that dwells within it. I hate it so much I’m resubbing. Are you guys happy now?
Can’t wait a couple weeks for the free version?
At the Compuserve era dialup speeds I’m getting for the update I might as well have waited. Actually, I’d subscribe anyway. The 15 bucks is worth whatever they throw subscribers’ way. I recall enjoying the game back last year, but didn’t have time. Now I have more time…except that I also got into Diablo 3 and BF4 Premium. And now that ‘time’ is disappearing fast.
I’m holding out for the f2p launch. I enjoyed it well enough when I bought it originally but not enough to pay fifteen a month.

People keep saying f2p, but it is still b2p, right?
I think so. But I bought it at launch, so it’ll be free for me! :)
If it’s b2p I’ll wait for a Steam sale on the client. How does the game really look maxed out? The screens look good, at least most I’ve paid attention to, but devs have this tendency of tweaking those for PR/marketing purposes.
I brought it from one of the third party sellers on amazon for about $20, and it came with the pre-order code (even though it wasn’t mentioned on the site. So if you’re interested it might be worth trying your luck on amazon/ebay! I expect there are more sellers around liquidating the initial run of ESO.
Oh, that’s right. I have a new R7 video card.
Will be fun to see ESO with the new card.

With a decent rig and Sweetfx, it’s the best looking MMO on the market. I am still stunned on occasion by how great the landscapes can look.

You literally just convinced me to not bother even to try the game out.
Vic convinced me to give it another shot. Especially if they have another beta for the console version.
My issue with the game during the beta for the PC version was just that it was too time consuming. That initial portion was great. I like that the combat involved blocking with the shield and swing the sword, just like in Skyrim. The combat in general felt closer to Skyrim than to an MMO. But that whole section lasted forever. Then when I finally made it to “earth” or whatever planet Elder Scrolls takes place on, I did a couple of quests, and they had the same problem. Each one lasted much longer than I’m used to from single player games like Oblivion/Skyrim. I just decided I didn’t have time to play something with really long sections that overstayed their welcome and long quests with lots and lots of enemies. If the training portion was so long, I can only imagine that it would stay that way later. Single player games, generally, are balanced a lot better for shorter encounters and tighter narratives. This felt more like an MMO in that I didn’t feel like it respected my time.

You mean that there’s PVP? It’s only enabled on the PVP map, Cyrodiil.

I hit up the ESO site the other day to see when the changeover to F2P was occurring and happened to see that the initial Justice system rollout came out yesterday. Patch notes are here, and they’re massive. It has excited to get back into the game.
Patch could be up to 25GB in size, depending on your language/region. Yikes.
Just don’t go on a GTA killing spree. Lots of reports of people racking up a huge bounty that they can’t pay off, and apparently the bounty dissipates slowly.
I always hated the idea of invincible guards since the old Ultima days. I get the need to regulate the player’s activities somewhat, but I wish they at least paid lip service to you being taken down via superior numbers as opposed to having superheroes on patrol.
On the bright side, the Justice system has curtailed my OCD habit of looting every single food bag/barrel in sight. I still open cabinets in hopes of finding a nice motif or something though.
It’s always funny with invincible guards - the obvious question is, why don’t THEY do the fucking quests? :)

I loved this game, but many things contributed to worn out my enthusiasm. Do joining the Cyrodiil area is still a dice rolling, with “Your account become locked for hours” and “The load screen neeeeeeveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer ends” are possible options? I found that each time my account was locked, I could unlock it by login with a different computer. But the “this loading screeen will last foreeever” was anoying, specially when I was starting to make friends, and play with these friends. Nothing worse than meeting at a hour with friends, getting into Voip, and being unable to join the pvp continent to play with them. eek.
I would love to go back, and I have unfinished business with this game I want to do… but is always scary to return to a mmo, you feel when you return, everyone will be trans-dimensional gods, with levels that can’t merely be described in words. And you will still be the incompetent that took the coward route, but now you don’t remember how anything works. You are now… the Newbie.

I had the infinite loading screen for a while too. They did eventually fix it along with the 3 crashes an hour problem.
So 1.6 just dropped Tuesday and completely destroyed my pvp build. I had been worried because of the info I was getting from reading the eso forums. My stealthy magicka melee night blade now hits like a wet noodle. That’s being unfair to wet noodles. I jumped a level 46 sorc yesterday and got the stealth stun and crit and what would have been a sure kill on Monday turned into a spanking for me. Usually I run if the burst doesn’t work but I kept telling myself this guy is only level 46 he will melt soon like they always do. I went down ignominiously. Looks like I’m going to have to take a break from the game for a while and see if it works itself into a playable shape for me.
I’m going through the 5 steps of grieving right now and seem to be stuck on depression with an occasional trip back to anger. The designers thought they were being really clever with their champion system and bumping all your stats up by a factor of ten so that 1% gains would look better. But in actuality they nerfed most skills and items sets and put the missing gains into the Champion system so that you could grind for them.
PvP is really a mess right now so I’d stay away until they get it fixed. There are some really over powered builds running around and one class has a kamehameha wave of death that is really annoying and will definitely be nerfed soon. They usually do get it working after some effort on it.
My biggest issue with ESO is the true stealth system that everyone can use. It’s just silly that huge groups of players can be completely invisible in a wide open field. Great design decision there.
