I’ve just started playing these past few days. I’m really enjoying it, as it’s clearly not Skyrim but Skyrim-lite, and I’m okay with that if it means some multiplayer action.
Is anyone in a worthwhile guild? I’m not looking for anything hardcore, just a decent group of talkative players.

Where would one go to read up on API and beginnings of add-on writing? I wanted to write my own simple buff reminder addon for a while now* but the resources I found so far have been rather vague.
*Before the whole paid mod fiasco :p
I second this question. Is there a QT3 guild in ESO? Does it have a guild store and whatnot? If not, is anyone actively playing and in a nice guild they could recommend?

For guilds, many of you would be happy in http://www.oldtimersguild.com/vb/content.php
Members have to be 25+. OTG is in almost all major games, and it’s generally a good, low-drama group. The TESO chapter is solid and generally helpful for new players. Apply at the site if you’re interested.
You can be in a total of five guilds for TESO, so many people also join a hardcore PvP/ PvE guild if that’s their interest.
Thanks for the guild reco Oghier, I will check them out!
So there was a small patch yesterday, and now once again my game is crashing/failing to start up with the same Patch Manifest Error I saw a couple weeks back and it keeps asking me to Repair my installation. I’m only running one mod, Skyshards, so I’m 99% sure this isn’t a mod related issue, just a poor patch issue.
EDIT : Follow-up. Game is unplayable for me tonight. After running a full repair install and changing permission levels on the launcher to run as admin (suggested by ESO support) I was able to get in the game and move around for more than 2 minutes without crashing, so I thought all was good. Nope.
Ran most of an instanced dungeon that took me awhile, was steps from the portal out when suddenly everything lagged out right in the middle of an easy fight with two lower level mobs. By the time the lag processed all the hits I was dead. Exited the game, restarted the launcher and ESO, was able to log back in to the instance, and immediately lagged out and died a second time, this time while standing in front of the portal pressing “E”. Had to revive to a wayshrine. Once out of the instance the lag seemed to disappear. I portaled back to Daggerfall, paid the 250 gold to repair all my equipment after two deaths, sold and crafted, then headed for the bank. While using the bank…CRASH to login screen. That was my 5th or 6th crash of the evening, so I’m done until next patch.
One tiny little patch Monday that fixed nothing important, and it seems to have fucked up the whole game. Several other people on the forums have reported the same Patch Manifest Error and crashing today, so I know it’s not just me.
No crashes on my computer or my wife’s (2 different configs: Win 7 and 8, AMD and Nvidia, different generation CPUs, …). But I know someone who was experiencing crashes earlier this week. He seems to have resolved them now. I’ll ask him what he did in game tonight. PC gaming has its downsides. :/

So I haven’t had any crashes but I am having the repeating patch manifest error issue currently, so frustrating.

No crashes here - I’ve been having a ton of fun in the game though. Can’t wait for the PS4 version to come out!
Fun it is! Both my wife and I are really enjoying it too. Did you get to try the console version and the gamepad controls during the beta weekend? How was that?
By the way, I’m busy listening to the game soundtrack on Spotify and it’s very good too. Worth checking out if you enjoy swelling orchestral music.

Sadly no beta for me. I agree completely about the soundtrack and was wondering the other day, just how much money they throw at the sound side, because I really enjoy pretty much all the sounds in the game.
Its a shame the UI is less than functional, but by now I accept that as a staple of the Elder Scrolls games :-)
Played for about 20 minutes this morning without the Patch Manifest Error or any crashes.
When I looked back in my Windows logs there were no entries for most of the crashes, though one CTD did coincide with a warning in the System log about my display driver crashing and recovering. I’m running a Radeon 7770 Ghz Edition. After seeing that warning I checked for updated drivers, but I seem to have the latest ones already installed. The game was working fine with my current drivers for at least the past couple of weeks, it was only after Monday’s small patch that it started having issues. Very odd…
I am still enjoying the game though. Always so much to do, with so many places to explore and cool new things to discover, and I haven’t even tried the PvP aspect yet or done any kind of group instances. I am certainly getting my money’s worth out of the game just as another solo Elder Scrolls adventure.
I played again last night for about 45 minutes and then again this morning for another 30 and had no Patch Manifest shenanigans or crashes. I even ran two different instances (one last night, one this morning). Very weird, no idea what was/is going on, but it seems to be fixed again, so…
I really like the exploration aspect of this game (so Skyrim-like!). This morning I found a tower I had run past a dozen times contained a trapdoor to a little dungeon full of bandits. Started a nice little quest that was somewhat lower level than my current level, but interesting enough that I want to see it through. Found all sorts of weapon and armor racks in the dungeon so I cleaned them out to take back to town and deconstruct for xp and materials. Usually all the stuff you find like that is 0 value junk, but I do like that occasionally you’ll find a piece that is enchanted. Those are great for deconstructing, and sometimes I’ve even found an enchanted piece of armor that was an upgrade to what I had been using. Exploration has it’s rewards!
Just a tip for anyone still new to the game - head over to Cyrodil as soon as you can (after lvl 10 I believe) even if you don’t ever plan to PvP. There’s a 5 minute tutorial of sorts that nets you 2 skill points, and opens up a really handy skill that buffs your movement speed by 40% (and you can cast it from horseback!)
I also tried a bit of PvP, it’s fun when there’s a battle and you’re not massively outnumbered, but that probably accounted for 10% of the time I spent there. The rest was 10% being jumped/outnumbered, and 80% standing and travelling.

How does combat in ESO differ than something like Guild Wars 2? Or does combat play pretty similarly between the two? It’s on sale as a GMG VIP deal currently.
They are somewhat similar. Red stuff on ground, dodge-roll out of it. ESO has resources, while GW2 is all cooldowns. ESO has a somewhat neat block and heavy attack mechanic, also.

Yeah, I’d say the biggest difference is that ESO actually has a target reticle and has more of an Elder Scrolls setup to the combat: Left click to swing your melee weapon (hold to do a power attack), right click to parry/block. Then there’s also a hotbar for additional abilities. Personally, I prefer the combat in ESO to GW2 and have found it hard to go back to the latter, despite liking the game, for that reason.
ESO combat took a bit to pick up, but it actually works great in melee with a single attacker. When they charge a heavy attack, block, then respond with a heavy of your own to stun. It’s very satisfying. Unfortunately with more than one attacker, you get knocked down and stunned all the time, which can be very annoying.
I haven’t played ranged. I played a destro staff templar on release and kept getting destroyed. I find 2H DK much more powerful, but that may be the game maturing a year. The combat is much better than at release.

So far my experience with MMOs are:
- Ultima Online way way back when it first came out.
- Guild Wars 2
- The Secret World
I don’t remember enough about UO to remember if I liked the combat or not. I’m not a fan of the combat in GW2 or TSW. GW2’s world is really attractive, so I enjoyed exploring around for a while. TSW also has an attractive world, but also a great setting with some truly interesting puzzles / quests. I’m also not a fan of Diablo / Torchlight type of ARPGs. If the combat doesn’t grab my in those types of games, is it unlikely to grab me in ESO? I imagine combat makes up a large part of the gameplay experience in ESO.
It does, but there really is a ton of exploration and questing with actual stories.

It’s the exploration that I liked in Skyrim, so maybe there is hope that I’d like ESO. Especially if there are some decent stories in there.
