Sorry, Ultrazen, I have no advice for you. I’m just popping in to update everyone on my wife’s progress since you bumped this.

She still avidly plays this on the Xbox One. She loves it. It’s her go-to on the console at this point.

She’s hit the champion levels (the stuff after the normal levels) and she’s running through the content in The Great Tree area.

Tamriel Foundry has been the best site for endgame build discussion since beta:

Thanks for the link to TF, great site!

Going to bump this just to say, if you haven’t played this for some reasons, and even marginally liked Skyrim, you should get this. This game is easily worth the price of admission, just to sight see. The world building is absolutely beautiful.

I also happen to think it’s better than Skyrim, in every possible way. For once, the combat in a game like this doesn’t suck. The character building is awesome, and different. The fights are challenging, and the quest are great and numerous.

Highly recommended.

Just a heads up that there are still a couple of hours to grab the discount on crowns for the Black Freydas sale. You can basically buy the DLC for 40% off.

I’m still playing when I can. Imperial City (IC)was not the PvP wonder land that I was hoping for. They chickened out at the last moment and didn’t implement the Darkness Falls access rules to the dungeon. Still hoping the do that in the future. With some work IC could be a lot of fun. Personally I like vanilla Cyrodiil right now. Still the best faantasy mmorpg PVP combat system and experience around in my opinion.

Orsinium is also out. New solo friendly DLC zone. Been goofing around in it. The new item sets don’t really tickle my fancy but I play a very niche build. I’m hoping that the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood DLC’s coming out Q1 and Q2 respectively have some bones for the stealthy players.

Do they still have the ridiculous durability on items?

I remember when I played and grinding XP with a bunch of people in an area, my equipment would be destroyed despite me not taking ANY damage.

Yeah, but it doesn’t seem as bad for some reason. Not sure if it’s because they adjusted the formulas or I just don’t notice it because I have more gold than when I first started. I just hit “repair all” when I go to sell stuff. If my gear is completely trashed it’s 1k+ to fix it. It’s a silly gold sink but gold isn’t really an issue at max level if you are even modestly competent at playing the game. I mostly PVP so there are no repair costs involved at all with that since player inflicted damage does not degrade your gear. Only have to pay for repairs if I do something stupid and fall off rocks a lot.

Vic, how is the imperial city DLC? I know you said it wasn’t the PVP wonderland, but is it any good? I like a mix of PVP and PVE so it sounds up my alley.

Durability loss is actually based on the amount of XP gained (like Vic said, gold sink) so damage taken doesn’t actually factor in. There’s extra durability loss on death, but otherwise there’s no avoiding it.

They actually lowered the durability loss by a third in a patch just yesterday. It’s really not too bad. I just stock up on grand repair kits from guild vendors at about 100 gold per pop, so it’s just 700 gold to fully repair my armor.

Another change a while back made it so that armor functions at 100% until it breaks, instead of degrading in performance gradually. So durability is not a big deal anymore.

That’s a really tough question. I have not been back inside for quite some time and when I do play PvP I just solo roam in Cyrodiil. I’ve been moderating my gameplay time though because my family did an “intervention.” :) Lately I’ve actually been messing around casually in the new Orsinium DLC mostly.

That said, here are my thoughts and what I have heard from others as well. All of this is for the NA server.

PvP in general is having a rough time with lag especially Cyrodiil around peak playing times. The devs have made fixing/addressing this a top priority. At least that’s what they have communicated. The problem seems to be a combination of gameplay incentives to group up into large “zerg balls” and combat mechanics that place large loads on the servers to process the data for everything from LOS to AOE effect checks. You could write a dissertation on the whole topic I’m sure. The PvP is glorious when the ping is below 150 (for me at least). When two big guilds stack on a flag at a keep or the last keep to dethrone an emperor is being contested by all three sides then things (lag) get silly and not much fun.

But to answer your question, from what I can tell Imperial City is pretty dead right now. That’s what I have heard at least. I did have a decent time when it first came out but that was just because I was grinding for my new gear and levels so I could be competitive in PvP.

So as much as I love this game, it was a real missed opportunity and as far as pvp goes it doesn’t add much. The original idea was that each faction would have to capture a certain number of keeps to unlock access to the IC. This would mean that factions with access could flood into the IC and then reap the rewards of being able to do the PvE content (gear, loot, quests etc). The factions that no longer had access would have players trapped inside and they would have to be cleared out. This would mean lots of ganking and small scale pvp, cat and mouse type stuff. The brilliant part is that back in Cryodiil the factions that were locked out would now have numbers and incentive to go take back keeps and restrict the access for the faction that currently controlled the entrance to the IC. A beautiful negative feedback loop.

So all those dynamics were lost and instead everybody could just stroll into the IC. Soon the zergs were running around through the sewers and the top side districts. Lag was never really as bad as Cyrodiil proper I think because there were no flags at keeps to stack on and the IC has separate server resources I am pretty sure. But the different factions each sought out and built their own “buff” servers and population balances were generally terrible except on one campaign (same thing happens with Cyrodiil to be fair).

The second big problem is that the top side districts were originally supposed to be capture-able by the factions but this was not developed or abandoned so fighting up there became like Call of Duty tag. You could die right below your spawn point and then respawn and jumb back down from your platform and go right back at it. It was and is still mindless and sad.

I understand the logic behind a lot of their decisions to basically “dumb” the IC down. They were most likely worried that their first DLC was going to put off a lot of PvE players and there were a lot of care bear tears. One infamous thread on their forums seems to have precipitated a last minute design change decision. There were ridiculous threats of lawsuits from players who claimed that it was not legal for ZoS to sell the dlc and then not grant instant access to it. Having to actually earn access by performing in game actions was some type of consumer rights violation.

So the short answer is sadly I wouldn’t bother with IC unless you just want to get the achievements, do the quests and see the sights. For the record, the IC is awesome from a design stand point. Architecture is great. The quests are cool but I found some of them hard to do solo. The loot is ok. ESO has a big problem with their RNG and bind on pick up items but that’s another topic.

My fervent hope is that they go back and gate the IC for all campaigns, buff up the gear drops and incentives to be in there, and implement some type of faction control system with buff rewards for the districts up top. Get rid of the respawn platforms and only allow respawn for factions which have won access by controlling the required number of keeps in Cryodiil. You could breath some new life into it and get a proper darkness falls type experience which I think from a design stand point is a really cool concept.

Probably more than you wanted to know :)

Not at all, that’s precisely what I wanted to know. Thanks for writing that up!

It sounds like they were totally going for Darkness Falls. Which is awesome, because Darkness Falls is still some of my favorite PVP moments in a MMO due to everything you describe above. Losing access, playing cat and mouse, and tying the whole feedback loop together. That’s a real damn shame that they didn’t got all the way. I wish some of these MMO developers would grow a little spine, everything gets so watered down in an attempt to cater to everyone and make everyone happy, which is impossible.

Yeah, Vic nailed it. One of the legitimate concerns with gating off Imperial City, as originally designed, is that DC would be shut out completely since they don’t have the numbers that AD and EP do. It’s one of the fundamental design flaws of ESO, that they thought an alliance of orcs and humans would have the same draw as elves or furries. I can’t see them forcing the gate mechanic on all servers and permanently lock out a fifth of the population, and the gate mechanic won’t work unless all servers have it. As it is, the one gated instance is pretty much an AD buff server (on NA anyway.)

It’s too bad, because it really is a fantastic design on paper. I do think that both DLCs have been pretty substantial for their (also substantial) price, though, and Orsinium is great for mostly solo players like me.

As a die hard “carebear” I am just as glad not to have PvE content mixed with or limited by PvP and I probably would have skipped that DLC if they’d done that. It’s really the sort of thing you’d be better off building into the base game than trying to sell separately or even adding after the fact.

I think that’s okay, though, to have a DLC that’s not for everyone. I think it allows you to provide engaging content to a specific group. It seems to me that when a design tries to appeases everyone, it tends to be diluted to the point where it doesn’t have enough hooks to really grab people.

I mean, I enjoy PVE and PVP, but I don’t care for raids. If they want to release a DLC that focuses on raid content, I think that’s great. Don’t try to make the raid content appeal to hardcore PVPers, make it for the Raiders and make 'em happy!

I think ZoS got stuck with needing to put the IC out there but it was originally intended to be a PvP enhancement under the old subscription model. Having gone Buy To Play (FTP dressed up with lip stick) and then committed to monetizing through quarterly DLC installments, they had a real problem on their hands. A launch DLC that was meant originally to keep the PvP crowd happy. A crowd that was growing more and more restless with lack of new content. They ended up splitting the baby and having the inverse Miley Cyrus “worst of both worlds.” PvE players felt like they were being funneled into the arms of the lunch room bullies. PvP players (speaking for myself at least) were unhappy with the lack of objectives, defensive zergs of the PvE players and just a sense of meaningless CoD style combat. The Telvar Stone thing could be fun. As it was I just felt like a jerk killing players to take their stones. Most just wanted to level up and grind mats. And then after you steal the stones, there really isn’t much to spend them on anyways.

As time goes on they might have the luxury to create specialized DLC. That’s why I hope they will choose to go back and revamp the IC.

Same thing is happening to the “raid” lovers. They are having to wait until the next DLC for a new trial. I’m not a big raid player honestly though. I found a nice guild that would run newbs through the trials so I managed to finish them and check them off the achievements list but it’s not really my thing. I know there have been a lot of complaints about the lack of new large group “raid” content.

For the record I play for the hated EP. And I know it seems like DC got the short end of the stick but they have some good guilds and one good EP guild rerolled a while back to go over to DC. I also know there is presently a lot of high level guild drama going on though. Population balances have been bad ever since the initial play burst dropped off a few months after release and I’m probably wrong on that because of my rose tinted glasses on the first few months. I’ve been on campaigns where EP was one bar and pushed back to the starting gates. For a while 4 or 5 months ago (maybe it was more as I lose track of time) I would wake up every day and have a DC Chainsaw Massacre Guild morning. Same guys running around putting out any fire around the ring. They were from Japan or Korea I think. I’ve done the same thing myself though so I’m not complaining.

I’m not sure how to fix it. It’s a tough problem if you want to keep the idea of discreet named campaigns that you belong to and that build up some type of living history, have emperors etc. Not sure how you solve the problem without ditching a lot of that.

Kinda offtopic but, speaking of Darkness Falls, you might want to check this; the game (Camelot Unchained) is being made by the creator of DAoC.

And of course, thanks @Vic Davis for quite detailed IC description.

Edit: @KevinC reading ESO, I just found out from one of your posts that you already know about CU; Anyway, a little reminder wouldn’t hurt I guess.

Yeah, I backed both Camelot Unchained and Crowfall, I’m looking forward to trying them out. I appreciate the heads up though!
