I’ve been mostly immune to the pull of MMOs for a while now, but this thread is not helping any. So help me if it shows up at some crazy price in the Steam summer sale. Dammit.

It’s usually really cheap on sites like Kinguin, if that helps.

Yeah, I got it for like, $11 a while back.

Here you go, $10.07 as I type this. Always spring for the extra buck for protection when buying from Kinguin just in case. This one with the explorer’s pack is worth the extra <$1 for any race/any faction.

I suggest either purchasing the imperial edition (mount and access to the imperial race) for 2100 crowns or one of the cheap horse mounts for 900 crowns. Like all MMOs, movement speed is essential. The cheapest place for crowns is again, Kinguin-- get a 2 month subscription (which comes with 3000 crowns) for $15.11. Beyond the crowns, you don’t really need to subscribe, although it does include access to all the DLCs. But since it’s the cheapest way to get crowns, why not?

Anyone know how many people still play this game?

Steam has 3k at peak, and totals are historically 5x that, so 15k active players on Steam. But most ESO players didn’t get there through steam-- reasonable to assume at least another 100k+ players on PC. Also the game has been extremely successful on PS4 and Xbone, but those are separate megaservers. A couple hundred thousand more on console.

Altogether, I’d say >500k active players total. That number of course swells when new content is added, like the Dark Brotherhood this week, as it’s a buy2play game and there’s less of a reason to continue playing in between content additions.

Question for Vic, Stusser or anyone else still playing: Which class is in better shape in Cyrodiil, Stamina NB or Magicka Sorc (for solo/ small group play)? I am thinking about coming back, and I believe I have V16 (or whatever the term is now) versions of both in what used to be good gear ;) The sorc was my main, but I assume the sorc nerfs have continued unabated.

Also, is Cyrodiil any less laggy?

Sorry, it burns when I PvP.

How is the DLC fenced off for those that don’t have it? Is there a minimum recommended level for it?

If you don’t have the DLC, you simply can’t travel to those zones. They scale to your level-- you can go there immediately after starting to play, if you want to.

Re-installed this, though I haven’t played in quite a while. I always liked it though, and maybe now I’ll get to 50. Maybe.

Stam NB got some nice boosts with some morphs being changed to disease damage so that the Champion Points system can boost those instead of them being magicka based. Ambush and Incapacitating strike got 4.5% damage nerfs but you won’t even notice that. Stam NB’s still hit very hard and with a combo of shuffle, sprint or rapid maneuvers plus some cloaks are very hard to catch. You can go bow/2h or dw/2h. Most players keep 2h on back bar just for the rally skill which is an awesome heal combined with vigor. You can also heavy attack from stealth for massive damage and then follow up with surprise attack plus incapacitating strike. That will usually kill most players. Pop radiant mage light right before you hit and you get a 20% damage boost.

Sorcs have been hit with a shield nerf of a sorts. 6 second duration for hardened ward. I still think a magicka sorc played well is one of the most dangerous opponents to go up against. Most good sorcs are refreshing shields anyway and now that the light armor shields block physical damage too they can really stack it up and still hit hard…plus bolt escapes mobility and stun on offense are still really effective.

I play a highly mobile magicka melee nb because I fell into some bad habits with my muscle memory and my mouse. I’ve tried other playstyles like ranged with destro restro and more sustain or even stamina but I don’t do as well as with my original set up. The big problem now for me is that without the proxy detonation burst I can’t finish off a lot of players by myself unless I catch them on siege or low stamina on a horse :) I can surf zergs and get lots of kills though. I just wait for that moment when the tide turns and the other side gets over run and then I clean up with my mobility and lots of panicked and wounded targets.

I run 5 Clever Alchemist triggered off back bar restro and on the main comabat bar I have 5 Julianos and 4 Clever Alchemist and 3 Willpower. 31k Magicka, 16k Health, 9.4k stamina. Spell Power is 2700 unbuffed, 3000 invisible or stealthed, full Alchemist plus major sorcery buff is 4k ish and if I am rocking continuous attack then 4.4k ish. My magicka regen is 2.2 unbuffed 2.5k ish buffed but I chug potions because of the Clever Alchemist set so I am almost always buffed.

Just made alliance rank 35 finally!

Wow, I was reading the forums to see what I should do with a new sorc (a class I’ve fiddled around with but only have at level 10 so far from back when I played before), and it seems, from the forum buzz, that sorcs are pretty much dead. People are putting RIPs into their signature, “slain by the Dark Brotherhood,” and while there’s always weeping after a big patch and balance, the stuff I’ve been reading seems pretty much like sorcs are a mess right now. Not encouraging.

Huh, my only character is a level 8 sorcerer, and I’ve not noticed any issues. What seems to be the problem?

Oh, these are end game, high level, PvP and raid-level characters talking, so like you, I have no real idea (my highest sorc is 10) beyond what I’ve read. Apparently, the problems revolve around survivability, with nerfs to shields, damage, complaints about pets and action bars, and, um, other stuff. Lack of choices dictated by the game mechanics, restrictive game mechanics and UI interactions, etc. It’s more the tone that gets me. I’m used to bitching about changes to a favored class after a big expansion or rebalancing, but this seems like a pretty universal and well-articulated anger, more so than I’m used to seeing.

I think though I’ll just ignore it, as I am about as far from these guys’ level of play as I am from Lebron James. I imagine building a new sorc would be fine for putzes like me.

All I can say rather sheepishly is that I was part of the choir that thought the mage light changes would RIP night blades. And in the end it wasn’t that bad. I have been chased down by players quite effectively with it but not as often as I had imagined that I would. Mark target from another nb is worse if I don’t have purge and even if I do, after spending 7k magicka I will get marked again if I am not behind an obstacle.

The whole point being that there is no perfect build. Everything has vulnerabilities.

I still see the same old sorcs with their mega bubbles up bolting here and there and then suddenly it’s inevitable detonation, maybe a bolt, c-frag, mage’s wrath and game over. You just can’t have the shields up all the time and need to pay attention and refresh them.

It’s hard to parse the comments after being away from the game for so long, and not ever having hit 50 (my highest character is 43). I was a bit worried about the tone and the people saying that sorcs were useless in PvE even, but I suspect a bit of hyperbole at work, and the inevitable “if it isn’t totally OP it’s broken” mentality.

Yeah, I’ve been reading the same stuff. I can’t really say never having played a sorc myself. I do know that in PvE unless it is super specialized like Sanctum Ophidia or Maw of Lorkjaw, then DPS don’t/shouldn’t need to shield themselves and the healer should be keeping everyone tanked up on health. I used to run the dailies when I was trying to level my Undaunted points to unlock the undaunted mettle passive and I never ran any shields or healing besides my funnel health with helped out a bit.

What worries me more than any nerfs to be honest is the Cheat situation and whether ZOS is committed to doing whatever it takes to control that.

Yeah, the sorc changes aren’t going to affect you much unless you’re doing vet maelstrom arena (the solo trial) or PvP. Which, incidentally, are the two things that they were great at, hence the gnashing of teeth on the forums. If you’re just levelling up or questing though, you can’t go wrong with sorcs. Their pets are great for solo play (you can solo dungeons with them), but they’re inefficient when grouped with/vs other players. Sorcs are middling when it comes to other endgame aspects.

Mostly because I like to make lists, if you were to start a new character, I’d recommend:

For solo questing play: magicka sorc, magicka templar, magicka nb
For PvE dps: stamina dk, magicka dk, magicka templar, magicka nb
For PvE healing: magicka templar, magicka nb
For PvE tanking: stamina dk, magicka dk, magicka nb
For PvP: stamina dk, stamina nb, magicka sorc, magicka nb, magicka templar

Oh, did I mention that stamina sorcs are terrible? They’re pretty neglected.

Man, the quests keep on coming, I LOVE it. I also just found the mages guild! FINALLY! YAY! This is so great.
