Finally loaded up the game and had a character from sometime waaaaay back in the beta or something. A whopping lvl 3 - so I just ran around in circles seeing the sights. Holy crap, this game is gorgeous. It might simply be because I’ve been playing the first Witcher which is looking a bit dated now, or I’m easily impressed by saturated colors.

Actually, a lot of it has to do with the layout in general - the fonts used are perfect. I’m fairly picky as I usually don’t have a top-end monitor and old man eyes. So legibility adds a lot to it.

Is there a manual / guide that I should read to explain mechanics in this game or is there an in game tutorial that explains everything?

This will get you going. It’s one of those games you need to spend a bit of time with, to really understand how it works, but it’s nothing too daunting.

One of the things that’s very different from other MMOs, is that your “class” doesn’t actually have much to do with what your character is. You can make every class in the game either a melee, bow, stealth, or magic using class, or any combo of those really. Most of your skills are determined by whether you put points into stamina and skills that support that, or majicka, and skills that support that. You want to do one or the other, as hybrid builds don’t really end up working well due to how the game scales things.

If you want to make the traditional “caster”, put all your points into majicka, if you want to make a melee character, dump points into stamina. Every class has a set of abilities, all of them have “morphs”, which you get access to once that skill hit’s level 4 in power. Those morphs very often have a choice between a majicka and a stamina option, just make sure you are picking skills that are cohesive with your stat dump, and you’ll be more or less fine.

Thanks Ultrazen. I went through the prison area and so far the tutorial messages seem pretty clear. Maybe tomorrow I’ll get a chance to watch the video you embedded here.

If you have any questions or need any help while in-game, I’m @oghier. Happy to lend a hand.

Thanks!

"I told my son, ‘By the way: This is the faction that I’m in, this is my character and you should join my faction so we can play together.’

“At the time, he was 11 or 12, and of course he doesn’t listen or he didn’t remember. When he got around to playing, he joined a different faction. He and his friends had been playing and playing and playing, and one weekend he said, ‘Hey dad, we should play ESO together!’ I said, ‘Let’s go!’ And we went, and we both loaded up the game and we went to go play and I’m yelling, ‘Tyler! You’re in the wrong faction!’”

Hines said that he could have made another character to play with his son, but he had already grown attached to his character.

“It seems like such a small thing,” Hines said. "But you make these choices in the game, and you start investing all this time in a character. One of us could have started over again, but that totally defeats the purpose.

“It’s just funny that little things like that are so frustrating. Why can’t I just do this?”[/quote]

In addition to Ultrazen’s video, I’m going to suggest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4G6lNsn8R0. This covers what appears to be ‘stuff you should be doing at early levels that you’d never figure out without someone telling you or getting to 50 and hitting your forehead against keyboard’.

Just started today. Thanks to @Charlatan for the hint. And others for tutorial videos and such. Man this game is gorgeous!

If you want to really go nuts, install Reshade 3.0 with the Vogue FX profile. Why yes, I do waste more time tweaking stuff than playing. Installing Minion for addon fun is my next waste of time activity.

Is it the skewed perception of an old man or is this game chock full of adolescent shitheads? Just recently saw a character named dxxks out for harambe. I guess the name filter didn’t allow ‘dicks’. There have been others that I thankfully can’t recall now. Lots of bunny hopping and running around like an idiot. If I stand in one place for any amount of time, some jerk will stand in front of me and jump up and down. Annoying.

Huh, I have never seen such a thing.

Maybe because I made my character female? Still not an excuse.

Hmm, are you on PC or console? I’ve been playing on PC for a while, and in general I’ve found the player base to be fairly mature (less so than TSW, more than Guild Wars 2.) That said, since One Tamriel the major hangout zones (Grahtwood, Reapers March, Deshaan and Stormhaven) has become more of a zoo, so you might want to turn zone chat off if it bothers you.

Stupid character names and male orcs wearing crop tops and short skirts can’t be turned off, unfortunately.

I saw that all the time. I even turned global chat off because there was way too much noise and almost no signal there.

PC version seemed fine to me when I last played-- probably 6 months ago. Obviously it is a MMO so you will find the jerks and griefers.

With one tamriel the whole world is shared, so you could see up to 3x as many fellow players. Probably less, because they shard locally also.

So I’ve been hearing a lot of good stuff about this lately. I don’t like MMOs much usually, but I love the Elder Scrolls games. Right now this is on sale for anywhere from $11 (cdkeys) to $20 (steam). My question is, if I pick it up from one of the cheaper sellers can I register it on steam? I don’t see anything mentioning it on any of the sites I looked at. $11 is the right price for me to give an MMO a shot, since I’ll end up buying the DLC at probably full price if I like it.

There is no reason to register it on steam-- steam just acts as a second launcher. Get whichever version is cheaper.

I’ve been eyeing this as well on PS4. I could go for a good MMO these days. I’m wondering if the base game is sufficient or is the “gold” edition with the DLC really the way to go?

The gold version is a better deal, and you can do all the DLC content at level 1. So if you’re interested in the thieves guild or dark bro’hood, go for it.
