I initially dismissed it because it was posted April 1st, but seems to be, given some of the official responses. It may be why the servers are down for an indefinite amount of time at the moment, or they may just be down because their performance was tanking right before they started emergency maintenance.

Well - at least its early. Imagine if the bank inventory disappeared from people after a months play? This is, while annoying, just a few days of play.
Yup. If you’re going to have a bug that severe, it’s better to catch it now. No one loses more than a day or so of progress.

Also, in a few years when we will be playing WoW 2 or EverQuest 8, we will talk about great launches, and someone will say ESO had a great launch, and someone will counter with “HA, everyone lost all their stuff” - this is the stuff legends is made of ;-)
Eh. Eve’s windows-destroying patch still wins IMO.

I am very happy about my toon stats. My wood elf archer sorcer is a frenchextraordinaire*/french* nuker. I can do quest 5 levels higuer than my level. I don’t have AOE, only singletarget nuke, but survivality is surprising high.
And I need to kill level 18 mobs with my level 12 sorcer-archer, because I have abandoned many bugged quest…
…I tried yesterday to go back to complete old quest. That was really frustrating. I had a quest where the task was to kill a boss in a single instance, and after killing him, the quest did not advanced. Tryiing to enter and exit the instance, the boss never spawned again. Shit like this is going to give very bad press to the game… like lots of very angry people.
I am enjoying the game more than in beta. I love to avoid the areas where players roam around, and visit these where people rarelly enter. I found lots of goodies, like iron nodes, chests, sometimes a lore book or even a minidungeon or a special crafting area.
Theres a lot of people in-game, probably because the way the game works (single massive server). The real release day is going to be a hilarious trainwreck.
When they rebooted the servers yesterday it fixed the two broken quests I had. Overall this is still a very smooth launch. I remember the launch in WoW where it would take 5 minutes to loot a corpse. It was long ago but we forget just how bad most every MMO launch was.
Overall I am thrilled with my purchase and I fully expect these minor issues to just be some bumps in the road that will quickly be smoothed out. I also love that it is a single mega server, no more spinning up way too many servers to avoid queues, only to then a few months later have to shut a bunch down.
Single mega server is definitely the way to go overall but they really need to tweak it to break up overpopulation more.

Teiman, about 75% of bugged quests are related to phasing problems. They can usually be resolved by logging out and back in. Not always, but usually :)
It’s the same issue that plagued beta. They’re having real trouble fixing it, and I suspect having such a tiny closed beta is part of the problem.

I agree. Also, if it’s like the closed beta there’s usually a window of time after a server restart when quests are likely to work and folks proclaim, “Yay, it’s fixed.” Gradually, though, the system seems to sludge up, and a few days later other folks announce, “No, it’s not.” Anyway, when the servers come back up, I’d recommend tackling any backlogged quests promptly. You might get lucky. :)

By the way, they claim the problem was limited to “a few North American users experiencing issues with their inventory,” that they have fixed it internally and that it’ll be part of a new build pushed out sometime this morning. They have at least been all over Twitter, Reddit and their own forums with updates (by “they,” I mean one person named Jessica). One post by a user really struck me, though…

The question on everybody's mind:
Can we get a rough ballpark ETA? Because you ladies and gentleman have been dangling a carrot in front of us.
That's why people are agitated. Some of us have been here almost 8 hours waiting around, and seeing "Soon(tm)" messages.
If someone had told us 8 hours ago "We'll be down for a while, please check in in the morning" I would have gone to sleep.
WTF is it with MMO’s that does this to people. I love the genre, too, and I spend too much of my free time on it. But staying up all night when the servers are down, in case they come back up?

I’ve wondered the same. Perhaps the grindy progression-based systems (gear grinds, rep grinds, etc) that are prevalent in Diku MMOs are so catered towards the obsessive personality types that they’re statistically over-represented in the communities? Last week, I was seeing all of these “guides” and “tips” on multiple discussion forums for getting ready for the launch. Stuff like staying hydrated, making sure your fridge is fully stocked with appropriate items (caffeine and other stimulants being of primary importance, of course), setting an alarm to make sure you got up and walked around the room every X hours to avoid blood clots, etc.
Like you, Oghier, I like these games as much as anyone but… I don’t see why there’s all this logistical planning in order to play 18-22 hours a day, every day, for the launch week. The game’s not going anywhere, it’s still going to be there next week. Content doesn’t get removed when other people complete it. I’m just completely baffled by the mindset.

You really don’t understand? It all comes down to e-peen, and the socially awkward people whose only mark in society is their rank in an MMO compared to others. And a smattering of people with serious OCD issues.

I understand yet do not comprehend, if you know what I mean.

So, I’ve been playing this comfy-couching with the Pinnacle mouse-to-gamepad emulator. I’ve tweaked it to the point where it is very playable. There are a few issues when trying to move your viewpoint diagonally… it sometimes doesn’t give 1:1 movement, and won’t move your viewpoint in one axis as quickly as the other.
That said, this is a gamepad game. The interface is made for a gamepad, the UI is made for a gamepad. Everything is made for a gamepad. But, there is no gamepad support. It is maddening.
One of the jankiest parts of using the emulated gamepad is the the movement of the character is totally digital. This leads to some really “hitchy” movement when you’re trying to move smoothly between strafing left and walking forward. Since Oblivion I haven’t played an Elder Scrolls (or Fallout game, for that matter) without analog movement, and it really detracts from the whole experience.
Please, Bethesda… for the love of god… add controller support.

I think that some people throw themselves into an MMO as a kind of escape…not unlike heavy drinkers or drug users. I know that for me, this is true, but I mask it as a reward system. Each day I get more and more disillusioned about my job and having something to look forward to at the end of the day makes it bearable. I do realize that my desire to play MMOs is at least partially driven by a desire to escape reality. And I can assure you…after the stress and frustration of a hard day’s work, if I come home and can’t get my reward, boy do I get angry!

For anyone still on the fence, Greenmangaming has a 20% coupon (8KM88H-PPN6L5-SJ9GRU) that can be applied to ESO taking it down to $48. You get the preorder edition and supposedly can start playing immediately.
Very tempting. VERY.

I don’t have a horse, :( so the idea to backtrack to quest that possibly maybe will work for me is not appealing… and can get expensive if I use teleports.
On the boss quest, I tried that, relogin to select character many times, teleport to a city, walk back. abandon the quest and start again since the last point. Nothing.
I will be happier if I manage to continue leveling without doing these quest. Tooo bad some of these probably give Undanted levels and may hide inside Skyshards, … or just are highly scripted and more interesting than the average “kill 5 rats” quests.
One little point, teleporting only costs money if you do so from the wilderness. If you go to a wayshrine and teleport from there it is free. The distribution of Wayshrines is very generous.

Undaunted levels come only from completing dungeons. So do those as they become available. Skyshards are never quest-limited. They are either out in the open or in a dungeon, but there are none that require a quest to access. You can see complete maps of the Skyshards and Lorebooks on a number of sites (Dulfy is up to her usual good work).
