Yeah, that’s what I said. OK…
This woman chose to defend a high profile rapist, it’s not like she’s a public defender. No need to glorify how great she is at defending rapists while making a fortune.
Yeah, its like praising a kitten killer for the efficiency and tidiness of their kitten kills.
Wait. WTF am I reading? The lawyer is scum because she chose to defend a client? Are you guys saying the only morally okay option is defense attorneys supplied by the government?
This seems to come up a lot over the years at Qt3, so I’m not surprised by it anymore. It does suck that the rich can afford better attorneys and therefore more liable to get away with crimes, but it’s the justice system we have, and it’s better than any alternative I can think of.
An attorney should fight for their client to the best of their abilities. If it’s not this attorney, it will be another one. It makes no difference. And it’s the only way the system will work. If there’s something to be fixed it’s on the low end of the income scale, with better public defense attorneys with better funding.

Yeah, I think she sucks because she chose to defend Harvey Weinstein. Chose to being the focus here. She didn’t have to - probably got paid a ton of money to do it. Then she said nice things like “regret sex isn’t rape”, slammed the #MeToo movement, and other great pro-women bits like the “pendulum is swinging so far in the overly sensitive direction that men can’t really be men, and women can’t really be women.” Men can’t really be men and get away with rape. She definitely sounds like someone you guys should be defending.
Other good quotes from the lawyer you folks are apparently defending:
-
“I feel that women may rue the day that all of this started when no one asks them out on a date, and no one holds the door open for them, and no one tells them that they look nice,”
-
“When you go home with someone after swiping right, act as if you have no idea what you may be consenting to seems ridiculous.”
-
When reporter Megan Twohey asked if she’d ever experienced a sexual assault, Rotunno replied, “I have not.” She then paused before adding, “Because I would never put myself in that position.”
Fuck her.
She’s scum because she chose to defend Harvey Weinstein, and her portfolio is mostly weighted towards of rich scum.
Im just as surprised Americans think highly of lawyers as a profession as some of you are defending her.
Maybe you could have told us BEFORE HAND why you were cursing her outside of doing her job? Otherwise, it just came off as “fuck her for taking a client willing to pay through the nose for representation instead of making the taxpayer foot the bill.”
Very few do. However, they’re necessary evils within the context of the broken system we live in.

It’s not her job to defend Harvey Weinstein unless she’s a public defender that’s been assigned to the case. If that was the scenario then I’d have no problem with her putting up a defense.
And what’s up with this taxpayer bill bullshit? You’re seriously going to suggest that she’s doing some sort of good deed by defending him so the American taxpayers don’t have to pay for it? That’s one of the more amazing leaps I’ve seen here.
EDIT - actually I see it’s Harvey Weinstein that you’re saying is doing the good deed. Which is just as amazing really. It’s not because he wanted to get away with all his rape, it’s that he wanted to save the taxpayers from footing the bill.
Public defenders are paid by taxpayers. Private criminal defense attorneys are paid by clients. Not sure how this is confusing, but I apologize for adding to it if I did.
And yes, if she’s a defense attorney, it’s her job.

Well I’m done. Not interested in trading personal insults over this woman.
If you think the lawyer sucks as a person due to her comments. Fine. I won’t stick up for that.
But hating her because she’s not a public defender and chooses to do her job for private money? Oh, what scum.
Presumably she could have done her job defending Weinstein and collected a phat check quietly, without making public comments about it.
But, you know, whatever. Trump is President. Shit like this lawyer’s comments are waaay below my radar.
That’s how I view it as well. I think it’s better in this system to err on the side of guilty people getting away rather than innocent people going to jail for something they didn’t do. And attorneys are supposed to be a big part of making sure that is the case, though with most cases being resolved via plea deals, you do get a lot of innocent people accepting punishment.

Why is she any different than, say, Kellyanne Conway? She took a job where she defends the worst types of people for lots of money.

She sounds like a terrible person who blames a victim for wanting to have a good time, having said that, the guilty deserve defense. Our system sucks in a lot of ways, but not for that. We need strong lawyers for everyone to get it right more often than we do. The answer is not to provide crappy lawyers for anyone… ever.
Well lawyers are not talking heads and PR spinners. They actually have an organization focused on things like ethics and knowing the law.

I’m not saying all defense lawyers are scum. But this one certainly is. She’s a shitty person. I don’t understand why anyone would defend her.
If a lawyer does a crap job, you can be put to death or locked away for life.
If a PR person does a crap job, you can lose an election.
It’s a similar reason why we talk about the benefits of nationalizing healthcare but not … I dunno, Steam games?
After reading the quotes you posted, I’d totally agree; she’s a crap human being.

I was fortunate enough to see this topic after you clarified why you disliked her. I am fairly certain others just didn’t follow the lawyer much. We know Weinstein is garbage, but that doesn’t mean everyone studied his legal team.

When a woman in a position of power says something like this, it hurts everyone. You know there are tons of people who read this and internalize the message that women who are raped did something to deserve it.
This is a woman who will say anything to help her client. No different than Kellyanne Conway.

It just felt strange to have the immediate reaction be “Wait, this poor woman is doing her job - how dare you slight her”. I specifically said fuck her, not defense lawyers in general.
